Magnetite is a member of the spinel group (A group of oxides which in composition are combinations of a bivalent oxide with a trivalent oxide.) which has the standard formula A(B)2O4. The A and B represent different metal ions that reside on areas in the crystal structure. In the case of magnetite, Fe3O4, the A metal is Fe +2 and the B metal is Fe +3; two metal ions in two different locations. This arrangement causes a transfer of electrons between the wustite and hemetite in a structured path or vector. This electric vector generates the magnetic field.
The metallic bond is responsible for the crystalline structure of pure metals. The valence electrons are shared collectively by all the atoms in the crystal. The electrons behave like a free gas moving within the lattice of fixed, positive ionic cores. The extreme mobility of the electrons in a metal explains its high thermal and electrical conductivity.
