Magnolia Cupcakes - Bake Sale Heaven

The last minute the night before your little one in school suddenly remembers, "Tomorrow my class is having a bake sale!"

Sound familiar? Bake sales are one of the most common ways to raise money for projects.

This week we are hosting a virtual bake sale for charity! Have a favorite cause? Tell us about it and make a bake sale lens for them!

So what is Magnolia? And what does that have to do with a bake sale?

Store bought? Really?

I am a firm believer in the home made. Aren't mom's cupcakes better than store bought ones?

Yes. Except if they're from Magnolia. In my virtual cupcake universe, I'd sell cupcakes from Magnolia so everyone can have some.

Are they too sweet? Yes. Are they too much? Maybe.

A Magnolia chocolate cupcake with chocolate frosting. A glass of milk. Heaven? Maybe.

Where is this magical place?

New York City!

Magnolia is on the corner of Bleeker and West 11th Street. I am a native New Yorker and even I get a little turned around when trying to find it!

Maybe it's the impending sugar rush that gets me confused...

Why does this place sound so familiar?

Because it was featured on SNL!

Andy Samberg and Chris Parnell made a digital short for SNL a few years back. It is no longer availble on YouTube but these guys have done a great mock-up. Popular video means popular cupcakes!

I don't know it from SNL.... Where did I hear it from?

Yes the other famous NYC show! Sex and the City

The ladies of Sex and the City helped make the place even MORE famous!

Sex and the City: The Complete Series (Collector's Giftset)

The price for all this popularity? A line out the door for a cucake!! Only in New York...

But I can't get to New York....

You can make them at home!

Granted I don't want to know what goes in the cupcake. I just want to eat it. If I knew how much sugar and butter goes in I probably wouldn't enjoy it as much....

hmmmm.... sugar and butter....

The Magnolia Bakery Cookbook: Old-Fashioned Recipes From New York's Sweetest Bakery

What else is key to making great cupcakes?

The right equipment of course!

Home made or store bought?

Can anyone do it better than mom?

No way! Home made is king!

JaguarJulie says:

I vote homemade every time ... being an indie kind of gal I appreciate the homemade.

MeganCasey says:

I'm drooling either way! P.S. Anyone have a bake sale lens about peanut butter cookies? Anyone, anyone... Bueller, Bueller...

Store bought is so yummy!

Shawna-Tayler says:

Some of the best are "homemade" and then sold through a local outlet...the best of both worlds! Check out my Cake Walk lens for more yummy ideas!

The_Homeopath says:

I'm really quite addicted to a few mixes. It's not quite as easy doing allergen free from scratch. I've found some really, really, delicious ready-to-bake stuff.

chefkeem says:

Store-bought cakes can be absolutely delicious if the company makes them from scratch or if they use a good cake mix. Some of the mixes available today are indistinguishable from a scratch recipe.

Milk please!

Been to Magnolia? Overrated or just right?

Is it on your list of things to do next time you're in NYC?
