Restoring and Maintaining the Value of a Scotty Cameron Putter

Ranked #24,188 in Sports & Recreation, #588,600 overall

If you buy a rare putter like a Scotty Cameron Circle T keeping it in perfect condition is important. However, because each putter is unique it's important to use the right tools for the job. Some finishes are very delicate and require special care, particularly the Oil Can, Teryllium, and Gun Blue finished putters.

You can often find used putters with a little rust for much cheaper than a new one. I picked up a couple Circle T putters at Camerons Clubs and it didn't take much to get them back to new condition.

Keep Your Putter Looking Like New

Cleaning

Most putters can be cleaned with mild soap and water. Be careful not to scrub to hard and do not use strong abrasives to avoid removing any paint fill. Teryllium or other copper alloys can be cleaned with brasso or toothpaste. A toothbrush is helpful to remove hard to reach dirt in any crevices.

It is essential to thoroughly dry your putter after cleaning. Don't immediately place your putter back into the headcover without first allowing it to dry.

Prevention

Moisture is a putter's worst enemy. Although many finishes like stainless or chrome are relatively rust resistant, some are not. Any raw steel or oil finish will need to be dried after each use (a soft lint-free cloth works great) and treated to prevent rust.

Use an odorless silicone spray or cloth after cleaning to protect your putter from rust. The advantage of silicone over baby oil is that it attracts less dirt and sand. You can also spray inside your head cover or wrap your putter in a silicone cloth to ensure it stays protected when not in use. You can use an official Scotty Cameron oil cloth, but for storage, I use a much cheaper Blitz silicone cloth.
