Make Beats Online - How To

Making Beats Online Is Easier Than You Think!

There are loads of computer programs available for you, even if you're unsure of how to make beats online. You don't even need a keyboard or drum machine. That gives you, the aspiring producer or beat maker a great advantage, since music making equipment can be very expensive. You can make beats online with computer programs that have the same sound quality as thousands of dollars worth of recording equipment, but you still have to know how to make beats to even get started.

How To Make Your Own Beats Online!

The first thing you should figure out before you make beats online is the song's style. Do you want a quick tempo miami booty-bass beat? A slow, silky, tough jam for the ladies? Maybe what you're after is a down south dirty banger. First you need to figure out the time signature and tempo. The time signature is a representation of how many beats make up the measure. How slow or fast the song is determines the tempo. This data can be changed easily in the beat making software. It all comes down to counting. Making beats is no more complicated than putting beats in the appropriate time slots.

If want to make your own beats you must become familiar with all of the different drum parts. Generally, the drum sounds that you program simulate the major parts of a live drum set. The snare keeps the time and is always the most recognizable drum beat, while the bass kicks low below to time of other instruments in the rhythm section (bass or synth lines). Hi hats and other cymbals are used for syncopation and to fill in gaps and give some meter. These are the basics.

This Is How I Make Beats Online.

First, I figure out the time signature and the tempo, then I plug in the snare over the course of the measures in the the same beat throughout. This sets an anchor point, just like a metronome does. It can be changed later to give the timing more flavor.

Depending on how solid and funky I want the beat to be, I next add some rhythm by filling in the bass kick. If I have already come up with a synth line, or a melody, or bass part I'll match that to the bass drum to add some support.

I'll add hi hats next (some open and closed) to count out the fastest beats of the melody. Dropping or adding hi hat notes and bass beats will make your sequence more funky.

You really have to get creative and experiment at this point. You should change the drum sounds around also. Most beat making software will have hundreds, if not thousands of sounds to build your perfect set from. Maybe a snare from an 808 is just not quite right, but a sampled, fuzzed out snare might perfectly hit the spot for your song's style. This goes for every single drum sound - use that sound bank!

Once you have all of the main drum set beats programmed pretty well (you'll know when you can't stand still anymore) add shakers, put in some hand claps, rim-shots, bongo sounds, tambourines, or whatever other percussion instruments that will add the right flavor and style to your beat. A little can go a long way now. Think of the "xylophone" sounds in 'peter piper' by Run DMC. It just takes the right thing, not too much.

The last point I have to make is to listen to music you love and really try to figure out what they did to make such great beats and songs. Listen to someone like Dr. Dre and make a beat in the style he uses (i did not say use his beats). You'll start to get comfortable with the placement of the beats and notes in his undeniable patterns. Listen to the classics, like James Brown and notice how he begins most of his rhythm section parts right on "the one", the first note of the the riff. It's always his most stand-out beat, and then he will use the "up" beat (like in reggae) to mix in some funkiness.

Learn from the all of the greats who have come before you and use the techniques they've laid solid ground with. Become a better listener and make beats that are solid, unique and irresistible.
