How to Make Money Selling with eBay: 5 Sure Fire Things You Need to Know

So you're looking how to make money selling with eBay or make even more money selling on eBay than you are now? There are a few simple things that a lot of people will over look even after running their eBay business for a while. But if you ignore these five eBay selling principles for too long, it will catch up with you. So buckle up and get going on these from the beginning, if you are just starting out, and get a leg up on the competition!

1. Know your market:

So you have some products and you are ready to sell or you have been selling some products for a while now. Knowing the market inside out is going to make a difference in your profit levels, your amount of items sold and, quite frankly, how successful you are as an eBay seller. Know what the items you want to sell or are selling are being sold for by others, how many are selling each day, what times of day they are selling, if they are new or used items that are selling, max sell price out there, minimum sell price out there, shipping charges for item sold, auction titles, auction photos and auction descriptions. You need to be intimate with your market so that you can provide the best price, shipping and service possible. If you are not keeping up with the market you won't sell a thing. OR, maybe a seller comes in and takes your market by storm. You may have to pony up and make everything that you are doing just a bit better. But know your market, know the top sellers, the new sellers and pay attention to what is going on each day. It will make you a better and more successful seller over time.

2. Know your competition:

Who is the number one seller in your market? Who has the best feedback? Who has the most listings? Sells at a low price with high shipping? Offers free shipping? Knowing the answers to these questions and many more are going to help make you successful at selling on ebay. You do not want to be taking a show in the dark. You need to know everything that you can know about the competition. And if you find someone out there doing something better than you, then improve on it on your end. Someone has better descriptions, then you need to improve your descriptions. The same for all aspects of what you are doing. And if you can do everything a little better than everyone else, you may close more sales and maybe even at a little higher price.

3. Test and repeat, test and repeat:

Have an item that has a great description, great photos but no one is looking at it? Try a better title or maybe a different starting price. Getting a lot of page views but not selling your items? Maybe your description is not as good as some of your competitors? Maybe they give more complete shipping or warranty information. If you are not having success with any of your auctions, you need to check out the competition, make some changes and look for improvements. It is testing and repeating until you have maximized your returns. Are others using a subtitle? Can you save a few cents and still sell without one? It is a process of trial and error. You just need to be aware that you should be doing this as a part of your business to help maximize your sales and your profits.

Good eBay business

Knowing your competition is key to running a good eBay business.

4. Have a plan (know your numbers):

Nothing is worse than selling on eBay like crazy and not making a penny. You need to know your goals, know your eBay fees, know what those unsuccessful listings are costing you and know your profit margins after taking ALL aspects of your business into account. If you cannot answer just one of the questions above you could be losing money and not even realize it.

5. Keep your head up:

This business is not always easy. Things can change. There can be new competitors or eBay can change the rules themselves. Some things that work today may not work tomorrow. Customers can be very daunting at times and it may seem like it is just easier to give up. Well don't! A lot of people make a full time living on eBay and you can too. You just have to be prepared to face the challenges and realize that this is a business and you will face business problems. Take it in stride and keep it in perspective. This is your business!
