Choosing the Right Make Up That Can Help Fight Acne

Acne and make up has been deemed a bad combination because it can aggravate acne and further clog the already blocked pores. Doctors often advise women who are suffering from acne to refrain from using make-up to prevent the further appearance of additional pimples and pustules. With careful product selection, complete avoidance is not always necessary.

A Fragile Relationship

Product manufacturers respond to this by creating acne-fighting makeup, cosmetics that can both hide the blemishes and help treat acne. This may sound too good to be true and in some instances, it may or may not work. Since skin types differ, the results will be on a case-to-case basis with no definitive outcome.

Acne is a skin condition that develops from the follicle of the skin. They can start as whiteheads and blackheads and can develop into more noticeable blemishes in the form of larger pimples or even cysts. This is due to the clogging of the pores due to the hardening of mixed sebum (or oil) and bacteria in the skin. Some people try to cover up the blemishes by using thick makeup which can be a serious mistake.

Ingredients are Key to Harmony Between Make Up and Acne Prone Skin

Ingredients are often included in make up products to prevent the clogging of pores or irritating the skin further. Antibacterial is the most common ingredient added such as salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide. Other companies rely on the more organic tea tree oil as the antibacterial ingredient. To make sure that you are using makeup that will not aggravate your acne, here are some tips.

Non-Comedogenic

Make sure that your skin care products as well as your cosmetics have this sign on the box or bottle. This means that it will not clog your pores. The ingredients are combined in such a way as to keep your pores free of heavy clogging agents.

Oil-Free and Fragrance-Free

One of the main causes of acne is the presence of too much sebum or oil in the face caused by overproduction by the sebaceous glands. Adding synthetic or animal-fat based oil found in most makeup can further increase the development of comedones (whiteheads and blackheads). Make up should as much as possible have zero oil content.

Fragrances on the other hand may not cause acne but it can further aggravate the condition and irritate skin. If there is a break in the skin surface, it can definitely irritate the wound causing scarring in the process.

Non-Drying

Make up products containing antibacterial ingredients such as salicylic acid and Oxy-10 can prove drying to the skin. This is an important ingredient that helps in suppressing the sebaceous glands in overproducing sebum or oil. However, choose acne-fighting products that are non-drying and contains enough moisture to keep your skin refreshed.
