Open Source Education on Squidoo
To mentor on Squidoo, make a learning lens. A learning lens refers to any lens constructed like a class syllabus. A learning lens gives learners a lesson plan to follow to help facilitate education.
I believe, that once enough lenses on a topic are created and linked together, a mentor network will be created that will serve as a powerful tool to help others become educated.
Learning Lens Best Practices
List any prerequisite knowledge required. As an example, a lens on physics may require math skills. If a lens exists that will help a learner gain the prerequisite knowledge, link to it. If no special knowledge is required, indicate that also.
Remember, you are creating a lesson plan. Lay out all the reading that is required for the learner to absorb key concepts and skills. Instead of providing a selection of books to choose from, select the books for the learner. After all, learners are looking for expert advice to help guide them. If your subject absolutely requires 20 books, you probably need to break up the subject into several lenses or at least clearly labled modules.
Indicate sequence. Give the learner a clear starting point. If there are several books and lessons included in your lens, clearly state what order the learning should be done in to achieve the best result. If order is unimportant, indicate that also.
Cluster modules by content. For instance, if you are recommending software along with a book for a certain portion of skill-acquisition, put them close together in the lens. Use naming conventions when clustering content so that the learner can do the lesson in chunks. As an example, in my illustration lens I divided lessons into Parts 1, 2, 3 and 3(alternate). Everything that a learner needs for each part is clearly labeled and clustered together.
Suggest further learning. Indicate what a learner's new knowledge qualifies them to learn next. If another lens exists that contains applicable lesson plans, link to it. For instance, a lens master that has a lens on basic HTML might link it to lenses on CSS, and Flash. Let the learner choose the path, but provide the logical options available.
