Sometimes nontraditional students don't think about themselves a lot - only about grades. I think that they need to start thinking about making friends too.
Here is a picture of three friends walking along the beach.

It reminds me of how just being with friends is so much fun. A popular Girl Scout song says, "Make new friends, but keep the old. One is silver and the other's gold."

Of course, this means that old freinds are the best, but both old and new friends are valuable, and you should always try to make new ones.

That song is really true. You can never have too many friends. Friends can make your life more fun.

If you are going back to school as a nontraditional student, you have a GREAT chance to make even MORE friends than you already have.

New friends can make any experience better.

Going to school after a break can be a LOT of fun with new friends.

Here are five GREAT ways to make friends at school.

These work for all ages.

1. Introduce yourself to students around you in class or online. Just say your name and ask theirs. Exchange phone numbers. You can say it's for class notes when you can't be there.

2. Join a club on campus or at school. The club can be something you are interested in now, or something you would like to learn more about. Keep going to meetings, and you are practically guaranteed at least one new friend pretty soon, and lots more in the future.

3. Be friendly. Smile at other people. Act interested in what they have to say.

4. Start a study group. Get names and phone numbers, and then actually meet to study. Mix up your study time with get-to-know-each-other time.

5. Ask questions and participate in class, but be careful to let others have time too. Be a good group activity member by pitching in and helping others, or just doing what you say you will do. Be someone who others can count on.
