How To Make Roman Shades - Installing

Where Should I Install My Roman Shade?

Inside Mount vs. Outside Mount
One big factor in measuring for your roman shade is deciding if your roman shade will be on the inside of your window frame (inside mount) or on the outside of your window frame (outside mount)... on your wall or molding. This is mainly a design decision.

An inside mount will offer more privacy, because there is less gap between the roman shade and the window.

If you have moulding around your window, an inside mount will show off your window trim.

If you plan on hanging drapes over your window, then an inside mount is ideal because it won't interfere with the hanging and functioning of your drapes.

Outside Mount

An outside mount can make your window look bigger. If you install it higher on your wall... you window will look taller. You can really manipulate the size of your window by how you hang your roman shade.

If you wish to have the roman shade clear your window when the shade is completely raised, then you will want an outside mount.

If you plan on hanging your roman shade on a decorative drapery pole... an outside mount is required.

You decide! It's your window.... do what you like best!

How To Make Roman Shades - Measuring

How to measure your window.

Before you can start sewing your roman shade, or start cutting your fabric, you need to know the finished dimensions of your roman shade. That is... how wide and how long do you want your roman shade to be when it is completely lowered.

There are three different ways to install your roman shade... inside your window frame, outside your window frame, and on a decorative pole.

Click here to watch 20 FREE videos that show you expert techniques and tips for making roman shades.Inside the window frame
If you plan on hanging your roman shade on the inside of your window frame... you will attach your roman shade to a dust board and then install the dust board to the top inside of your window frame.

The finished width of your roman shade is the width of the inside of your window frame MINUS 1/2 inch.

The finished length of your roman shade is the length of the inside of your window frame.

Outside the window frame
If you plan on hanging your roman shade on the outside of your window frame... then you will attach your roman shade to a dust board... and install the dust board to the wall above your window frame.

There is no strict rule of how far above the window you should install your roman shade. The higher you install the dust board the taller your window will appear.

The finished width of your roman shade is however wide you wish your roman shade to be. If you're not sure... two inches passed the edge of your window is a common installation.

The finished length of your roman shade is the length from the top edge of your dust board to the window sill

On a decorative pole

If you plan on hanging a roman shade on the outside of your window frame on a decorative drapery pole... then you will slide your roman shade onto the pole... you will still install a dust board inside your window frame. Your hardware that will raise and lower your roman shade will be installed on this board.

Roman Shade Supplies

Here's a list of roman shade supplies you'll need to make a roman shade.
Face Fabric and Lining
You'll need your face fabric and lining. For most roman shades you'll need cut your fabric to your window's measurements plus the seam allowances.
Roman Shade Rings
You'll need roman shade rings to thread your lift cord through. How far apart you space your rings dictates what your roman shade will look like. If you space them close together going up your shade your roman shade will have small pleats... and if you space them far apart your shade will have large pleats. If you space them far apart going across your roman shade, your roman shade will turn into a relaxed roman shade... and closer together you'll have a flat roman shade.
Roman Shade Lift Cord
You'll need lift cord to raise and lower your roman shade. You'll need enough to run the length of your roman shade for all columns of rings... and over to your cord lock and shade cleat.
Decorative Cord Cleat
Tidy up all of those messy lift cords and easily keep your roman shade raised by quickly wrapping your lift cord around a decorative cord cleat.
Cord Locks
Roman Shade cord lock. Raise and lower your roman shade like a blind. Simply pull on your lift cord, and lock your shade in the raised position. You'll need one for each roman shade.
