Management Training Principles

Ranked #17,065 in Education, #363,545 overall

All effective leader-managers share certain characteristics.

In order to be a better leader and manager, we suggest that you should focus on developing these most important characteristics.
There are many characteristics that go to make effective management and leadership, but in this article I want to cover one of the most important: Clear communication
This article will suggest five steps to take.

  1. Develop a "Big picture vision"

  2. Have a clear idea as to how you wish to be perceived by others, and then act accordingly

  3. Be more goal focused that the others

  4. Get the team involved with goal setting using SMART

Let us go into each one in a little more detail.

1 Develop a clear goal focus

You should have an understanding of the direction of the organisation. This allows you to make plans and organise your resources, both of people and materials and to plan ahead in a strategic manner.

Your development opportunity
Although you already have a clear view of the organisational vision and plans you could act now to further refine the big picture into specific projects. Begin to assign deadlines to the major steps and think about who should form the project teams that will achieve them.

2 You should have a clear idea as to how you wish to be perceived by others, and then you should act accordingly.

Your development opportunity

You may have clear personal standards: now your challenge is to live up to them. It is difficult to be consistent in a changing world. "You are the captain of your soul and the master of your fate" to the degree to which you can control your own performance under all conditions. Develop more self-control and you will gain more respect, and a greater level of personal confidence. Begin to hold others to higher standards so that the quality, quantity and spirit of your team are of the same high standards you expect from yourself.

3 Be more goal focused than the others

Your development opportunity

You may be goal focused, which allows you to concentrate and make good progress. The mental habit of goal focus is the precondition of successful leadership and so you would do well to play to this strength.

You have goal focus, which should now be put to best use in two ways:
1. Become more ambitious in selecting your goal. Think bigger. How could you do twice as much in half the time and effort?
2. Consider how you can communicate your goal to others who need to know. You probably do not work alone. Some people need to know your goal. Make sure you inform those people whose cooperative help you will need.

4 Get the team involved with goal setting using SMART

Your development opportunity

You know that goals should be well organised to fit the SMART profile: Specific, Measured, Achievable, Realistic, and with a definite Time deadline.

Even though many people know the SMART target model, few use it enough to their benefit, as they should. So you can now harness the potential of goals by sitting down today and answering this question: What five specific things do I want to achieve within the next 365 days?
Motivate other people in your team by means of training in goal setting using the SMART model. Have them tell you what five things they want to achieve in the next year. Help them to build practical written plans.

There needs to be a great sense of vision and mission in the management training principles. Moreover, there should be a clear linkage between the strategic, tactical and operation levels. Nice lens. For those who want to refresh their mindset on Management training principles, this lens is for you!

Awesome post! This lens really touches on points to make you a better manager. Point two really stands out to me. In the book 'as a man thinketh' (james allen) states a person is always master of their soul. Sometimes a poor master who makes poor decisions but always master. So by becoming a better master/manager of self, you are able to manage others more effectively. Keep the great lens coming.

I really like your point about deciding how you'd like to be perceived by others and then acting accordingly. this has to be one of the great management training principles of all time. It reminds me of Stephen Covey's "beginning with the end in mind" and is a great way to clarify who you are and who you want to be perceived as being.

As usual with your lenses there is a load of information and the important part from my point of view is that there is more than meets the idea. On this occasion your beginning says it all in a very straight forward manner. Obviously one can dig deeper as you do, but the whole point is surmised right in the beginning. I am copying these 4 points to remind me.

This is a wealth of great information on management! I love the clear goal focus point because most people miss the boat on this one. Nice lens!
