Maps for Teachers to Inspire Their Students
For me maps for teachers goes back to 5th grade and it was maps for students. It was with Mr. Hill, my 5th grade social studies teacher. We had to memorize all of the countries in the world. But this wasn't a chore because Mr. Hill brought maps and history alive. Of all my teachers growing up he was the best. I still remember his classes, his excitment with history, talking about social studies and history. I loved his class, as did many of the people I know who also loved his classes.
This excitment with maps has continued today where i now make half of my living from drawing and selling maps. I love to image the places I draw when I am producing a map and to think about going there. That is what this Lens will be about, the love of maps and the places they can bring you. So lets get on with maps for teachers.
Drawing Maps Turned Into a Life
Editable maps for teachers, students, and home
I have been drawing maps for a long time. Commercially I started drawing them in 1990. Trying to make a collection of maps that I could sell. It took a year of drawing, 7 days a week to pull together my first collection. This included US and Canada maps, World, States, Regions, and some countries. It took a lot of research to find sources, I discovered that maps from the US government are royalty free and can be copied and resold as your own. So that is what I did. I scanned USGS, CIA and maps from the US Defense Department. Scanned the map, and redrew it point by point, state by state, country by country. Maps were later translated into many different formats.
I made them in Freehand, Illustrator, jpg, gif, bmp, MacDraw, and eventually into PowerPoint formats. Copied onto little floppy discs and assembled in the back of Kinko stores. Photo copied everything, manuals, sales material, labels, everything. Actually pretty much still do. Though now you can print digitally just a cheap
I sold my maps every way I could. In catalogs, went to shows, inside other companies products, OEM, under different names, ads in magazines. You name it I did it.
We have eventually produced three different product lines with hundreds of maps all sold online. One for schools with maps for teachers, a yearly subscription, mostly for businesses doing presentations and websites and most recently a site that sells individual maps.
