Quotes and Features About International Woman's Day March 8
March is Women's History Month, and March 8 is Women's Day.
Freedom loving people who celebrate the accomplishments of women will honor women and girls on International Women's Day. Some parts of the world, where women's freedoms are somewhat recent, go so far as to make it a public holiday. How you can be part of Women's Day, March 8?
I found out International Women's Day is not a modern invention. The first time it was celebrated was in 1911. Why don't we as Americans all celebrate more than ever the contributions of women and the survival stories from unequal status? In the 1970s, what were called consciousness-raising groups were commonplace. Wouldn't it be great if on March 8, a gazillion "post conscious-awareness groups" spontaneously gathered to talk about the dreams that have been realized; as well as dreams that remain?
Why not get your whole family, your town to plan events to celebrate women's contributions, their history, their changing roles. This page will show you where to go for support, ideas and events to link with.
See also where the idea originated for Women's History Month. And what the first International Women's Day was all about. You'll also find out where and how many places in the United States honor women's achievements on this day. I think it would be a great thing if we all decided to entertain a woman who may feel forgotten on this holiday? How might we encourage communities to celebrate in a way to promote women everywhere? There's a website devoted to International Women's Day with thousands of images, events, stories and more. My lovely niece in the photo - working on a Habitat for Humanity project - shows just how women of today are changing the look of family photo albums.Women's Stories of Overcoming Oppression With Ingenuity and Cooperation
"Half the Sky" is one of the best selling books today. This means people are discovering how overwhelming the problems are for women, especially outside the West.

by Sheryl WuDunn and Nicholas Kristof
Here's what one reviewer at Amazon had to say: "This may be one of the most important books I have ever read. I heard Mr. Kristof on the radio and the title caught my attention. After the first page, the book caught my heart. This is such a well researched and well written book that I could not put it down. We all realize that women the world over face challenges that women in the US never have to face. Prepare to have your eyes opened when you open this book. I dare you not to be moved, and I dare you to do nothing after reading it. The women who share their stories here are some of the most courageous and strongest women ever, and they are changing their world for the better."

The first International Women's Day occurred on March 19 in 1911. The inaugural event, which included rallies and organized meetings, was a big success in countries such as Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland.
The March 19 date was chosen because it commemorated the day that the Prussian king promised to introduce votes for women in 1848. The promise gave hope for equality but it was a promise that he failed to keep. The International Women's Day date was moved to March 8 in 1913.

- Nature with its lofty wisdom, in life forms, dispersed genders;
Indisputably, both beauty and utility exist in all that it renders.
No say had I, no preference, in being granted a masculine role;
My inadequacies, I know; and well aware of the realm I control.
There is however, this desire to shed shackles; to be complete;
And the grasp, that sans harmonizing help, it is an impossible feat.
I suppose women sport the same view; with these thoughts, agree;
As a man and incomplete being, O' Femininity, I salute thee!
