Maria Callas - Floria Tosca, Norma and Violetta
Maria Callas truly incorporated all the essential qualities of a venerable Opera Diva. Her voice became one of the unforgettable landmarks of the 20th Century Opera.
A collection of her recordings would definitely be included to my desert island discs, if I had to make such a decision! For me, the voice of Callas is the only true voice of Floria Tosca, Norma or Violetta.
Ten years ago when I was in Milan installing an exhibition at the Pinacoteca di Brera, I managed to sneak into La Scala, that is just around the corner. La Scala was under restoration back then, builders running in and out, leaving the doors open all the way to the main hall. I dared myself, and soon I was standing on the very stage that Callas, Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev had performed during the 50's. I have performed on many stages myself, but never in such grandeur. I can still recall the rush of adrenalin mixed with the adoration of the Artists as well as the air of the Venue.
