The Legacy of Marine Swords

Marine swords have been an important weapon for the Navy for so many years now. Some of these marine swords are still used during battles although most of them are used for ceremonial services only. Amongst all these marine swords there are two types that rise above the rest. One is called a Mameluke sword and the other is referred as The Noncommissioned Officer's (NCO) sword.

Mameluke Sword
Mameluke Sword is considered as the oldest armament in the United States military weapon store. It looks like a scimitar, which is an Arab or Turkish saber with a curved blade that broadens out as it nears the tip point.

Mameluke- a member of a former military class, initially consisting of incarcerated and enslaved Turks, which ruled Egypt from the 13th and the 16th centuries. They remained influential until the early 19th century the Mameluke sword was embraced by various militaries in the West such as the United States Marine Corps.

The very first Mameluke sword was bestowed to Presley N. O'Bannon, a marine lieutenant, by Prince Hamet Bey, an Ottoman pasha, in the year 1805 when O'Bannon led Arabs in a victory in the shores of Tripoli. Almost 20 years after the battle, every Marine officer is required to wear the celebrated sword. However, during these days, the Mameluke sword is just used in Marine ceremonies only.

The Noncommissioned Officer's (NCO) Sword
The Noncommissioned Officer's Marine swords has a general length of 34 to 36 inches. The blade length is commonly between 28 to 30 inches. This particular marine sword is marginally curved and single-edged. The hilt of this sword is cast-brass hilt and a leather-wrapped grip.

This sword is used by NCOs or Noncoms, who are registered member of the armed force who has been granted power and authority by a commissioned officer. The NCO sword is designed after the modeled United States army's foot officer's sword in the year 1850. It was formally introduced to the marines nine years after that but has notable changes in design in 1875 and 1918.

Noncommissioned Officer's swords signify the traditions and integrity maintained by the Noncoms. If the Mameluke sword is the oldest weapon in the United States military armaments then the NCO sword is the oldest weapon in the United States services armaments that are still being used up to these days.

Other bladed weapons of the United States marines are the M& bayonet, OKC- 3S bayonet and the KA-Bar.

The union and link that holds the United States Marines together was built and constructed almost two and a half centuries ago. Every Marine officer accedes to a legacy of the Marines that have come to serve the country before them. And each officer has the responsibility to maintain the legacy and its traditions and has the duty to pass this responsibility to the future Marine officers.

The swords used by marines then and now are part of the legacy and tradition. They are vital parts in the totality of each Marine officer.

The 1830 Napoleon Saber

Napoleon Bonaparte, a name feared by millions in the mid 1800's. His name brought terror as well as strength to nations. He began as an usurper in 1979, which led him to become the first ever Consul. Five years after which he became the Emperor of France. This French emperor conquered most of Europe and with all his triumphs in the first decade in the 19th century, he made sweeping military tactics that lead his cavalry to victory, most prominent of them all are his victories in Friedland and in Austerlitz.

And with all these that were happening to Napoleon, the weapon that he wielded was his scabbard. This weapon was believed to have played a huge part of the Napoloeon's success that it was later used in other wars and armies, even making its way to the United States' Civil War.
