The Seattle Mariners are a Major League Baseball team based in Seattle, Washington. They are in the West Division of the American League.
   
    The Mariners were created as a direct result of a lawsuit. In 1970, in the aftermath of the Seattle Pilots purchase and relocation to Milwaukee by future Commissioner of Baseball Bud Selig. As a result, the Mariners franchise (along with the Toronto Blue Jays) was established in 1976, for play beginning in 1977.
   
    In the team's inaugural season of 1977, pitcher Diego Segui, in his last major league season, became the only player to play for both the Pilots and the Mariners.
