Kaizen: Opportunities For Personal Improvement

A personal agenda for trying to clean up my life ...

  1. I try to remember to celebrate the mystery of Christ's life, spend more time in prayer and ENJOY life without losing perspective or acting like I am some sort of the martyr. Since there is a LOT for me to do, I do not think I have time to be your slave!
  2. I must be the change that I wish to see in the world. As a business and industrial process engineer find software interesting because software involves systems, methods, processes, communication that are necessarily logical and executable.
  3. I aggressively seek inspiration from others because truly great ideas are easier, less costly to obtain than ever before. We live in fantastic times that are getting better with every second -- we should be very ashamed of ourselves when we do not appreciate the magic of sharing thoughts with others.
  4. If the secret to meditation is to maintain constant focus on the breath, then the secret to prayer must be constant listening. So I am working to be a better, more active, more empathetic listener. The rules are simple: 1) Clarify, focus, 2) Use gifts with discipline, 3) Reflect, study, improve, 4) Serve others, 5) Pull up the stake, 6) Perfect the present, 7) 100% honesty, 8) Zero tolerance, 9) Invest, 10) Listen to get better at listening.
  5. I believes in constantly reducing waste through everyone's effort and using business process re-engineeering to attain agility, I try to spend at least some of my time thinking as an industrial engineer studying methods so that our work can be more usable, efficient and meaningful work can be.
  6. Perhaps, there is a need for thick-skinned, crude, demanding SOB at certain dysfunctional ecclesiastical situations, but mostly, I need to stop being an mindless self-centered jerk ... and instead spend more time thinking about promoting other peoples ventures, ideas, agendas.
  7. I invest in proven tools and coaches to remind myself to stay focused on principles and not doing the most important, most courageous things.
  8. Accidents, mistakes and misunderstandings happen, but I try to avoid wasting any energy by being angry ... I immediately to forgive others as I admit my mistakes and ask for forgiveness.
  9. There is NO EXCUSE for not smiling, laughing, enjoying ... it is important to resist the tendency to take things too seriously.
  10. When I reflect upon the things that I really enjoy and appreciate, I realize that I need to spend more time THINKING artfully and differently and less time buying and consuming.

Manifesto!

Free, creative enterprise ... prayer, faith, diligence

"The key to the obedience of God's people is not their effectiveness but their patience." These are the words of the anabaptist theologian John Howard Yoder (taken from The Politics of Jesus). Yoder continues, "The relationship between the obedience of God's people and the triumph of God's cause is not a relationship of cause and effect but one of cross and resurrection."

Without doubt, the cross, salvation, sacrifice, resurrection, redemption and being born again are central to my faith as a Christian, but the same God who created and directed John Yoder, also led me to be an economist, engineer and farmer. There are important differences and similarities.

First of all, anger, hatred, suspicion, jealously and frustration cause suffering. All of these arise out of a lack of awareness, compassion and mindfulness. Prayer is not primarily about one's personal requests (e.g. "God, do X for me."), rather prayer must involve active listening to God and, for those who can act, prayer life must involve deliberate, creative, prayerful actions to bring about more awareness, compassion and mindfulness.

Secondly, misplaced patience with a goal not directly aligned with one's faith is not patience. Such patience is idiocy, or perhaps an element of evil, laziness and cowardice, too! We should be impatient with those activities that we feel may be at odds with what what we are called to do.

Finally, faith is not something that can be given, forced or coerced. Faith is not just a simple of instructions, routines or rituals that one just mindlessly accepts and follows. Faith is dynamic, unique and living. I respect the faith of my parents, but my faith must be different. A more robust faith involves an element of risk, exploration and growth in an environment of search, conflict, choice, mistakes, freedom, liberty.

My prayers, actions, impatience, faith and diligence is reflected in my intention is to work more aggressively foster free enterprise and rehabilitation. I am quite confident that if I share what opportunities, investments and solutions I have with them, I will be able to enjoy my life with them and, God willing, I will have the strength, ability and energy to continue help provide for others and myself.

The lack of meaning in our lives is DRIVEN by the fact we no longer live in a truly creative and free enterpise society. Ideas and initiative do not matter as much as conforming to social, political and economic conventions. No one e
