Marketing sparks - creative ideas

Ranked #1,258 in Business & Work, #57,376 overall

Givers gain by providing VALUE

The golden rule for some used to be - the person with all the gold make all the rules. But today, the real truth is much more amazing. People who provide VALUE to other people FIRST are given amazing power to better our society.

Want proof? Consider that Twitter is valued at one billion dollars or if Facebook were a country due to its popularity, it would be the third-largest country in the world.

I am a small business columnist for Examiner.com and Topix.net. The purpose of this lens, Marketing Sparks, is to introduce you to tools and strategies - marketing sparks - to help you prosper.

Regardless of what you do in life, your life has VALUE. Nevertheless, if you do not effectively market both yourself and what you do for a living, your true value may never be realized or appreciated. Please do not let that happen. While the world may not care who you are or what you do right now, that situation can change for the better - with a little help from people who care and understand the prower of social media. When you have a good design for sharing a message that addresses the needs of others that they understand and appreciate - what you have just done is enchanced your value. And, what is that? That's good marketing.

Do you need to enhance your value? If so, it's time to read, learn and implement. Let's get started....beginning with The BIG buzz machine below.

What's a sparkler?

A tool for print, Internet & news media buzz

When most of us hear the word, "sparkler," we think of something you light with a match that gives off sparks. However, I want you to think in terms of clever ideas rather than firey sparks. For the purpose of this Squidoo lens, the term "sparkler" refers to a mini marketing campaign involving a display ad that asks three questions. Each question requires more than just a simple answer. It requires a defense of its position - it's "claim to fame."

The overriding idea here is that as a result of all the effort involved to bring you the answer to all three questions at a single location, you will remember the questions, the answers and the reasons why those answers are valid. Immediately below are three modules. Each module features a question, an answer and a defense to the "claim to fame."

The sparkler display ad solution

Getting more "bang" for your buck

The problem with traditional advertising is two-fold. First, few people read the newspaper, listen to the radio or watch TV for the advertising (with the possible exception of the Super Bowl). People engage traditional media for the news and entertainment value - first and foremost. For advertising to be noticed, it must somehow engage the reader away from his initial purpose - reading about news and entertainment. The second problem with traditional advertising is that in most cases it does not provide marketing feedback to the advertiser. Hence, the advertiser remains clueless regarding the impact of his advertising message on his audience.

Unlike traditional advertising, online advertising can easily provide marketing feedback regarding an advertising message. So, why not link both traditional advertising and online advertising together? That is what a Sparkler display ad campaign does. It provides a landing page link in a printed publication or public display to a website using a budURL to automatically track all visitors to the page. But, what motivates the public to travel from the printed page to an online site? Answer - the opportunity to answer a question. Sparkler public displays in storefronts make this easy to do. Simply take a business card from the display.

There is another advantage to doing a sparkler display ad. Each ad is composed of three business questions from threee different businesses. Therefore, three businesses help pay for both the display ad and online space. Each business asks a different question. Each business not only provides an answer to their own question, but defends it online. (See Sparkler Q&A in the module below.) Plus, each Sparkler display ad is PR-optimized. That means each ad is backed up with PR buzz to the media via social media press releases. The overall cost for the PR buzz, offline and online publicity is less than the initial cost for just one business to post a traditional display ad.

Special advice

For salespeople in transition

  1. Put your resume' on Squidoo.com. See example.
  2. Get friends and associates to send you one-page letters of endorsement regarding your professional expertise as PDF attachments. Have them visit your Squidoo site for specifics about your capabilities.
  3. Write a letter to the company CEO to which you would like to work. Include four one-page letters of endorsement, no resume'. Instead, request the CEO visit your Squidoo site. Cost in postage? Just 49 cents.
  4. Encourage friends and associates to follow Step 3 in your behalf.
  5. Join Twitter.com. Build a network of "retweeters" to effectively spread important messages you send out to them as DM's (Direct Messages).
  6. Commit to blog on a regular basis and seek out "blog carnivals" related to your area of expertise.
  7. On some level, do a Sparkler campaign. You can begin absolutely FREE. Simply send a press release about yourself to Synergistic Business Marketing. Remember, every person has unique value. Be sure to emphasize yours in the press release. Creating good buzz for yourself requires the building of a personal infrastructure of caring, connected people, places and things. After all, the best recommendations come from third-party endorsements.

Bidding for media space

Saving advertising dollars with online auctions

type=text

Mediabids.com is a new way to to buy ad space in newspapers and magazines. In a very real way it actually bridges traditional advertisng with online advertising. This is important because it can save any business time and money - an average of 60%. Here you by-pass the sales pitch, meeting and phone time to negotiate ad rates. This special online auction service brings the publications to you, which will then compete for your advertising dollars.

Any small business wanting to expand its market base should take a look at Mediabids.com. The service actually introduces you to new publications. You can even compare and research publications with online media kits.

There are no fees or no hidden costs to see what Mediabids.com has to offer. You pay only for the price of an ad if you decide to make a purchase.

Winning bids and "sparkler" campaigns

Co-op the campaign with help from your business friends

type=text

If you are a small business engaged in advertising your business, please do not "go solo." Think BETTER TOGETHER. Whenever possible, seek out co-oped advertising opportunities with other businesses. Such opportunities should save you money.

What is it that makes a person respond positively to a display ad? What is it that causes him to WANT to purchase what is being promoted? Is it the size of the ad that matters most? How about the color? Is it clever words and a "call to action?" Many marketers believe it is "clever words" and a "call to action" that induces sales - much more than the size or even the photogenic beauty of an ad.

Mediabids.com gives you tremendous leverage in the purchase of ad space. Using that ad space to spread your message through a Sparkler campaign greatly adds to that leverage. To begin, three distinct businesses contribute to the purchase of a single ad space through Synergistic Buiness Marketing. But then, the print ad exposure goes viral on the Internet via a budURL link that is connected to a Squidoo lens. The Squidoo lens then showcases each of the three businesses in a separate module as previously demonstrated. But, that is not all. There is also PR optimization buzz specifically directed at the local news media. This is done with SMR's (Social Media Releases) and an ever-expanding wide range of social media resources.

Why not reach out for help BEFORE you know you desperately need it? "Could have, should have, would have..." usually ends up meaning you didn't do what you knew you should have done in the first place. See the "Helping Hand" module farther down the page.

The world of creative ideas

It's time to think like an artist... and link up with friends

type=text

There are lot of things you can do to build a business, any business. Although many things cost money, there are a lot of things you can do that are more a matter of clever innovation than cash outlay. The whole idea behind wikinomics is based upon mutual collaboration between business concerns. According to marketing guru, Seth Godin, we have come full-circle (see the picture in this module). The business of life is all about people - more than anything else.

Make no mistake, there is "power" in employing strategies to build your business when the needs of people are at the core of the strategy. Consider, for example, netweaving, big shrimp marketing( see module video below) and co-op advertising.

If your business needs more customers, you have come to right place. Here consideration is given to both conventional and unconventional ("outside the box") thinking.

The bigness of smallness

Big shrimp marketing

Here John Moore of Brand Autopsy gives you some wonderful insights into building your business by "thinking small." Moore is the marketing genius behind a little coffee shop that has ended up making a big splash in shopping centers across America and around the world. Ever heard of "Starbucks?"

Photography as a marketing tool

It helps to have access to a mobile studio

You may be surprised what all a professional photographer with a mobile studio in a bus can do to promote a business. There is a lot more that is possible than just professional headshots for an annual report, wedding or special event photos.
You have such things as camera-ready and web format images being made available on CD and DVD. You also have on-site printing being made available, poster prints 20x30, large wall portraits, coffee table albums and professionally bound albums. Watch the video and see for yourself how skilled Paul Steven Finkelstein is with his visual art.

Paul is a busy fellow. If you cannot reach him via his toll-free phone number, I recommend using the "Helping Hand" module father down the page.

Foursquare - social location gaming

Clever storefront venue marketing approach

Watch the video. You will be amazed! Foursquare is actually a great tool for generating "buzz" for any business. That is why you see so many impressive businesses at the bottom of Foursquare's home page using it. To see an example as to what is possible with Foursquare in terms of storefront promotion, click on the Ting's Thai Kitchen Foursquare Page. See how this one restaurant is using Foursquare in combination with Twitter to spread its message.

Get yourself a Foursquare Cling Sticker at Foursquare Clings. All it really takes to get the cling sticker is a stamped, self-addressed envelope to me. However, it takes about a week to get approval from Foursquare to get me approved as your Foursquare venue manager . Once you receive approval, that is when the social media magic can begin. Keep in mind there is no cost to the venue to get the Foursquare approval.

Marketing with media at the storefront

The Sony Internet TV way

Google has merged TV with the Internet. Sony is among the first hardware suppliers to create an HDTV screen that includes set-top box components in the HDTV itself. Sony also provides a set-top box for folks who already have an HDTV and just want to add the Internet connectivity.

Marketing with media at the storefront

The Logitech Revue way

Although Sony was the first company to come out with an Internet TV, the first company to jump on the Google TV bandwagon with a set-top box was Logitech. If your storefront is already a Wi-Fi hot spot and you are currently using an HDTV, this could be the most cost-effective way to bring video marketing into your storefront.

Marketing with media at the storefront

The Orb.com do-it-yourself way

Suppose you wanted to create graphics and video not only for yourself, but for others in your community to be advertised through your storefront. Suppose you wanted to do for other storefront venues all over the world what you are doing for yourself. Is there a free online service that could accommodate you? The answer is "yes." Welcome to the world of Orb.com.

Square - a new way to pay

Swipping credit & debit cards via a cell phone gadget

The way the world works is changing. Cell phones have surpassed the production of computers three times over. You can take the Internet with you wherever you go with an Overdrive device from Sprint or Verizon. But, even more clever is the Square device from Jack Dorsey - the man who is credited with creating "Twitter." Now, anyone virtually anywhere can engage in business commerce. No need for an expensive contraption to swipe a credit or a debit card. All the person needs is a little credit card reader that plugs into his cell phone headphone jack. Watch the video in this module. Think of the possibilities and applications. This is as revolutionary as the credit card itself...maybe moreso.

Grant-funding opportunities

The magic of the mutual uplift

Grant-funding is something all nonprofit organizations seek. The Foundation Center is a national library system with branch office and cooperating collections across the USA designed to help. But, where should a nonprofit turn for funding when grant money cannot be found? Prehaps a little non-traditional outside-the-box thinking would help?

The majority of top USA foundations contributed more than one billion dollars in grant money between 2008 and 2009. Due to the current economic environment and the increased demand for grants, some foundations have decided to reduce the number of grants, but increase the dollar value of the grants they do give. Therefore, pursuing grants remains a good idea for those nonprofit organizations who qualify. However, may need to limit your RFP letter to just two pages. Since many of these foundations have a presence on Foursquare.com, you may find it beneficial to reach out to them with a short text message there first. A short text message in the right place can be very powerful tool - especially before sending an RFP letter. Think of that text message as being a mutual uplift for both your needs and those of the foundation.

Simple marketing ideas

With Big Potential

Not every good marketing idea is complex. Sometimes the best ideas are actually the simplest to implement. Here are a few:
  • Change your answering machine's voicemail message from time-to-time. Consider making it humorous. You may be surprised at how well-received it becomes.
  • Get yourself a Skype account, complete with your own Skype-in number. This VOIP service provides more than free Internet telephony. It provides any-size file transfer, instant messaging, conference calling, and video conferencing.
  • Partner Pamela Systems with your Skype account and you can record all your conversations for use in online videos as special guest narration. Pamela Systems is actually an automated virtual assistant. You will be amazed at all the things Pamela can do for you, automatically.
  • Would you like to optimize your business use of Facebook? Join the Lake County Social Media Group. This group does monthly workshops that are now remotely available to people who cannot physically attend the meetings with their laptops in Middletown, CA.
  • Many know Yelp.com as a free online review service for restaurants. But, Yelp is actually much more. You can cleverly use it to promote just about any business. What makes Yelp so powerful is that it is highly ranked by Google (Google Rank of 7 the last time I checked). Want to see proof that Yelp's SEO really is powerful? Do a Google search for the restaurant, "Cheesesteak Experience" and see what pops up in the top slot on the first page. All it took to make that happen was to freely submit a review. A word of caution. DO NOT advertise your business in a post about another business. This will get your account banned from Yelp. Use Yelp cleverly to lift up other businesses and perhaps they will return your generosity.
  • Do you need to encourage local folks to "shop local?" Get yourself a Twitter account and add Twellow to it to locate local Twitter users. Then, begin sending out "delayed tweets" with useful information (not sales rhetoric) using Socialoomph to those Twellow folks.
  • Monitor the Web for interesting content. Set up Google Alerts for things you care about - your business, yourself, favorite charities, etc. Knowing what people are saying online about things you care about can be extremely valuable.
  • What do you share on Foursquare? Location based social networks like "Foursquare" and "Facebook places" are growing rapidly. Thousands of people share thousands of updates every hour, but not everyone thinks about what they're actually sharing. Fourtrace let you search through all the Foursquare updates that are made public through Twitter. Try it yourself and find out what the internet knows about you and your friends...it just might provide some benefits to your business.

Have you got a quick marketing tip?

Share it here with us

This Squidoo module is actually the Squidoo Guestbook. That means if you are already a free Squidoo member your photo can automatically be included with your "quick marketing tip." However, even if you are not a member, you can still submit a marketing tip. Please keep in mind that not all submitted tips will be posted. Only those deemed truly clever and useful will make it into the viewable list. Twitter and Facebook integration is also activated. HTML is also available for all postings.

Presidents and Prime Ministers all over the world are asking for new fresh ideas regarding job creation. Here is a new one: Establish the ability to create more jobs as
a quality and selling proposition in marketing, and hence, as a consumer demand. The idea is to introduce a common logo for businesses that have the ability to create more jobs during times with high unemployment. The logo by Verygoodidea introduced at the Spreadshirt site, www.verygoodidea.spreadshirt.co.uk is meant to be used on - t-shirts for sure, but also in ads, in sales brochures, on websites etc. A clear signal and message
for the customers that want to award the heroes in the economy. Think about it:
If environmental friendliness can act as a quality and a selling proposition in marketing,
why shouldn't job friendliness act as same?
