Maroochydore: Maroochy is a popular Queensland holiday destination

Maroochydore boasts the Maroochy River estuary, sandy beaches, shopping, quality restaurants and many natural local attractions. It is a favorite holiday place for young families and energetic surfers alike. Camping at Cotton Tree is popular as is kite surfing at the mouth of the Maroochy River. Local bird life includes the large but exceptionally graceful Pelicans who glide easily above the water. Boating and fishing are other popular pursuits.

Maroochydore: the changing face of a great holiday destination

Maroochydore was the favorite haunt of my children when they were young. The quiet, shallow, clear waters of the Maroochy River with its wide, clean sandy beach made the ideal playground for toddlers.

We revisited Maroochydore recently and found it has undergone a transformation with new high-rise apartment blocks and excellent restaurants and cafes.

Maroochy was once the poor cousin to Mooloolaba and Noosa but is catching up with recent development.

My grown children, though, love the rough and tumble of the large Mooloolaba surf and the trendy shopping.

Maroochy: twin benefits

Maroochydore offers both riverside and beachside enjoyment. The beautiful Maroochy River is the favorite hunting ground for fishermen and water skiing and boating enthusiasts. Families picnic along its picturesque banks and the more active visitors jog, walk or play tennis at the riverside facilities. Restuarants and cafes (even healthy ones) line the street opposite the Maroochy River walk.

Maroochydore Beach offers great surfing and board riding. It has become the favorite location for kitesurfing.

If you are lucky enough you can get accommodation that gives you a view of both the river estuary and the breakers on Maroochydore Beach.

Maroochydore: places to visit and see
Travel guide and map, accommodation and attractions:
"Cotton Tree, an ocean-side suburb on the Maroochy River, is a popular holiday spot, well-serviced by holiday flats and a caravan park. The rivermouth, which is a kite surfers paradise, was once the site of a large timbermill from where the local lumber was shipped to Brisbane by paddle-steamer. There are river cruises, and great fishing opportunities in this aquatic paradise."
Walkabout Guide to Maroochydore
Travellers tips, things to see, local attractions:
"Located 98 km from Brisbane, it has kilometres of golden beaches, fishing, boating and other aquatic possibilities, small shopping centres geared to the tourists (notably the Big Top Shopping Centre in Sunshine Plaza which spans Cornmeal Creek), some small industrial development in the hinterland, and a sense of holidays in the air all year round. Moreover, it sits at the estuary of the Maroochy River , thus juxtaposing quiet waterways and a plenitude of pleasant riverside parks and picnic areas with the more exuberant surf beaches."
