Mary Kay Cosmetics Consultants Tricks
Working for Mary Kay can be a rewarding experience, but it requires a lot of work, especially if you have no experience working retail. When working as a Mary Kay consultant, you only get back what you put in, so you have to make each effort you put in really count. With the following tricks under your belt, you can really shine as a Mary Kay cosmetics consultant.
First Week with Mary Kay
Ready to be a Mary Kay consultant?
So you think you're really ready? Good. I'll give you all the basic information all new members receive upon joining.
1. Review your inventory brochure and discuss ordering wit your director. It's recommended to have at least $600 wholesale of items on hand to start with, though there are $1200 and $3600 options as well.
2. Attend the weekly Success Nights. I suggest only attending the first one where you receive your Mary Kay pin. This is essential to advertising. The rest of the Success Nights are just time to pat each other on the back; you can use it to do more work.
Did you know Success Nights usually come with a cost? You can get money knocked off for certain order sizes, bringing guests or completing so much work, etc.
3. Create a Contact List of at least 65 women.
4. Sign up for the website. I don't think it's necessary. See reasoning below in Get the Website.
Order a business kit. Also not necessary.
5. Add these supplies to your facial kit.
washclothes
cotton balls
pens
small calculator
Q-tips
Planner
There are a lot of other items suggested. I didn't find them necessary. I would also recommend these additional items that Mary Kay fails to mention:
headbands
small ponytail holders on a ring to keep them organized
6. Invite people to your first Success Night.

Getting Mary Kay Clients and Consultants
Get the Mary Kay Website
Right click and save any image below. They will save full size and are ready to use as soon as you insert your own information.
Mary Kay directors recommend you purchase your Mary Kay website. I don't.
It will look like every other Mary Kay consultant website and will never come up in a search engine by itself because it is logged beneath the normal Mary Kay page. The only way anyone will ever find you is if they type in your name or zipcode into the Mary Kay consultant search engine or see your flyer.

You can't advertise for your own website in any other way; you are limited to only advertising for Mary Kay in general.
The search engine is finicky, and Mary Kay states they make no assurance that your name will appear in the search. Obviously directors get preferential treatment on it.
If you feel you MUST have a website for some reason(planning to sell out of state often) then consider submitting it to Google or Yahoo to have it crawled and listed in the search engine. This IS allowed, but do not use any company trademarks(Mary Kay, MK, the logo, etc.)

Get Propay
The only way you can get paid through your website is if you get Propay. This also allows you to get paid by credit card in person and not just on the website. It was probably the single most important thing. I recommend that you get Propay, but skip on the website.
People are more willing to pay for something if they can pay with plastic. And your payment is automatically okayed, rather than waiting to bounce a check.
Don't forget though, you have to advertise that you take credit cards, because otherwise everyone will assume your cash and check only and never buy. The trifold was my favorite, because it held itself up. I would position it amongst my product displays.

Have a Mary Kay Party
This is probably the mostfun thing that came along with running the Mary Kay business. Giving makeovers at parties is fun and relaxing as long as you're not pushy about buy, buy, buy to the women you're making over.
Suggested call to get a party or facial going:
"Hi _________, this is _______. Do you have a quick second? I actually am calling because I need a favor. I just started a busines with Mary Kay and they have asked me to put together a portfolio using sharp women I know. I immediately thought of you and would love to feature you in this portfolio. Is there any reason why you wouldn't let me borrow your face? Great, which works better for you in the next week; a weeknight or a weekend?
Now, they want me to feature at least 15 different faces, so if you know anyone else that would like to join you, please ask and I will give you a special gift just for helping complete my project early! Is there any reason why you couldn't invite 2-3 people? Great! I will see you then!"
Of course, all Mary Kay consultants have those 'fun' games they like promoting. There's the Fish Bowl, in which each woman writes the name of 10 friends and their phone numbers on 10 slips of paper. The names are placed into a fish bowl. The consultant then harasses these friends to get them to have a party, buy product or become a consultant herself. Can you tell I dislike this 'game'? It's probably one of the most invasive games Mary Kay consultants 'play' as it's basically a consultant asking people to sell the information of your friends. Know how you hate receiving spam e-mail because some company sold your e-mail address and name for a penny? Others hate having their phone spammed.
The game i recommend more is the Name Game, because it is beneficial for both the consultant and the customers. It makes Mary Kay agents into less parasitic beings than the Fish Bowl game does.

The customer is the one in charge of contacting her friends and talking them into holding a facial with the Mary Kay consultant. The customer then wins the item she put that friend's name on. Customers can get a lot of nice, free stuff with this if they do it right and in conjunction with a friend's permission and consultants get a bunch of new facials to give, as well as new customer prospects. This is a win-win for all.
Some consultants may choose to change the flyer to say that you only get a discount on the product or that your friend has to buy a certain amount of product before you can get the item. This is still beneficial for those customers who wanted the items already.

Mary Kay Hostess Party
Get it Booked
Find someone who is interested in booking a party with you. This can sometimes be a little tricky because there are all kinds of excuses that someone might make for why they just can't. It has never made sense to me why they would make excuses in the first place, because you are giving them a FREE facial. There are ways to overcome their objections.
Give the Mary Kay Facials
This is THE MOST important part of the Hostess Party. Mary Kay cosmetics practically sell themselves once you've got someone putting it on. The products feel great, they feel smooth, lightweight. A lot of consultants stress out about whether they're doing this part right, but the fact is, if you're instructing on how to do it properly and responding to the women's concerns and questions, then you're doing it right!
Make the Close
Hold an 'exit interview' with each woman. This is best when done with women who are purchasing, but it can be effective with women who are interested in purchasing but don't have the money to yet.
Closing the deal can be a little difficult, especially if you end up coming off as a sleazy used car salesman. If you want to do it well, you have to have tact and you might find practicing a script useful to get you started.

Building a Mary Kay Team
Mary Kay parties, particularly Hostess Parties, can be the most effective place to successfully recruit Mary Kay consultants. But you can't just start talkig about Mary Kay and hope people will take interest. It takes a lot of work, dedication and following up to convince someone the Mary Kay opportunity is for them.
Free Printable Advertising and Gift Ideas
In my desperate attempt to get the word out about my business and to even get people to want to do a FREE facial, I started printing off all the coupons and wishlists and other advertising material I could possibly get my hands on. These are effective in raising interest and awareness that you are a Mary Kay agent.

This is a coupon. Be sure to print it landscape, I forgot couple times and got funky looking coupons.

I bagged this coupon up along with a Funsized candy bar(usually Kit Kat since I hate them) and then hung them on people's dorm room doors. In some, for people I thought were the most promising to make a sale with, I included a sample of the Pampering Hands packets you get with your starter kit.

Please insert your own photos in place of these two. This is meant to be an example only. Alternately, you may follow the two links provided, read the Terms of Useage for these photos VERY carefully and determine what you may and may not use them for.

Free Printable Christmas Advertising
What better holiday than Christmas to try and sell Mary Kay products? That's right! None! No coupons for Christmas, instead you give out a Wishlist to women and offer a Shopping List to men.
I rolled these up short way and tied it closed with a red ribbon. I then tucked a candy cane down the center and hung the curved edge over the outside. Tape was sometimes necessary to hold the candy cane in place.
