Freemasons: the lowdown
The organization is administrated into what they call "Grand Lodges" with each governing its own jurisdiction and consists of various subordinate lodges. Each grand lodge recognizes each other through a process or landmarks and regularity. There are also various appendant bodies, all of which are individual organizations related to the main Freemason branch and each administrating itself independently.
The metaphors of various stonemasons' tools are used in Freemasonry, against the allegorical backdrop of building the biblical King Solomon's Temple to convey what has been described by both Masons and critics as "a system of morality veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols."
