What were Me and Julio doing down by the schoolyard?

It was against the law. That much we know. But, what exactly were Me and Julio doing down by the schoolyard. Were we fighting, protesting, kissing? It had to be something considerable to cause Mama to go to the police, a radical priest to get involved, and make the cover of Newsweek.

Stephen Colbert Recently Questioned Paul Simon

Lyrics to Me And Julio Down By The Schoolyard

Title: Me And Julio Down By The Schoolyard
Written By: Paul Simon
Year: 1971
Original Album: Paul Simon

LYRICS:
The mama pajama rolled out of bed
And she ran to the police station
When the papa found out he began to shout
And he started the investigation

It's against the law
It was against the law
What the mama saw
It was against the law

The mama looked down and spit on the ground
Every time my name gets mentioned
The papa said oy if I get that boy
I'm gonna stick him in the house of detention

Well I'm on my way
I don't know where I'm going
I'm on my way I'm taking my time
But I don't know where

Goodbye to Rosie the queen of Corona
Seeing me and Julio
Down by the schoolyard
See you, me and Julio
Down by the schoolyard

In a couple of days they come and
Take me away
But the press let the story leak
And when the radical priest
Come to get me released
We was all on the cover of Newsweek

And I'm on my way
I don't know where I'm going
I'm on my way I'm taking my time
But I don't know where

Goodbye to Rosie the queen of Corona
See you, me and Julio
Down by the schoolyard
See you, me and Julio
Down by the schoolyard
See you, me and Julio
Down by the schoolyard

This is Paul Simon's first album without Art Garfunkel. This remastered version features both the album version and the demo version of Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard.

The eclectic musicians on this cd give a hint to how Simon's solo career will go with a group of great songs.

So many things went on in school yards...

Not-Pop says:

Nah. I think they were tokin' up and got busted. The radical priest wanted to make pot legal. :P

Sesame Street?

Paul Simon sings Me and Julio with a little girl on Sesame Street. This is a fun, albeit awkward, rendition where the little girl makes up her own lyrics.

(Personally I think Paul should have just let her sing the whole thing)

Do you have any thoughts on what this song means? What were they doing? Does it even matter what they were doing? Toward the end of the song, were we with him and Julio down by the schoolyard?

Treasures-By-Brenda wrote...

That song was just right this afternoon for my mood. I must say that it seems like an odd song to have visited Sesame Street with...

Aww..... I tried to load the video and it's linked to an error message saying it's no longer available. This is a fun and original lens, nonetheless. As for what Julio et al were doing down by the schoolyard, I always believed Paul Simon himself had no clue - the fun for him was most likely in instigating the guessing! Five Stars!
