Medieval Helmet

Medieval Helmet

For hundreds of years, medieval helmets have been into existence in order to protect the soldiers during the time of war. The main purpose for which this helmet was created and used by the soldiers is to protect them from the strong and dangerous weapons of their foes. Knights of the medieval period are recognized for the use of sophisticated armor and hence the importance of medieval helmets. Medieval helmet simply means an armor plate made from very strong and tough steel, which would protect the head of the soldiers in a war field. It is actually a part of the body armor that would protect the upper portion (i.e. the head) of the soldier. Thus, we can say that medieval helmet refers to a part of the knight armor, which helps in protecting the soldiers from harm.

Samurai armor

Medieval weapons, roman weapons

The first prototype for Japanese samurai armor came about in the form of the yoroi during the Gempei War of 1181-1185. The weight of the yoroi was around 60lb. The upper-body armor of the samurai was known as the 'Do'. This comprised of the 'Sode', the suspended shoulder and upper-arm protection plates. The Sode had hoops by which silk cord was tied and then fixed to the back of the armor in an 'agemaki' / decorative knotted tassel. Guards were also placed over the shoulder cords, and a leather plate placed across the bow cords to prevent them from been cut or becoming ensnared during a skirmish.

A samurai's protective helmet, or Kabuto typically consisted of from eight to a dozen plates all fixed together with cone shaped bolts. Much like in the military of other cultures, a samurai's helmet would display the samurai's rank and his group or clan, and often be very elaborate and decorative looking. As many samurai had long hair, their ponytails would protrude through the tehen, a gap left in the centre of the helmets crown.

Shikoro is the name of the thick five-plated protector of the back of the head, neck and the cheekbone which was fastened to the bowl of the helmet. The top four plates of the Shikoro would be upturned to create the fukigaeshi. The idea of the fukigaeshi was to prevent the vertical slicing of the shikoro's horizontal fastening chords. A visor is also on the front of helmet and is known as the mabisashi. This would not only help to keep the sunlight out of the samurai's eyes, but its protrusion would also act as a degree of protection for the face from the extended and downward strike of the enemy?s sword.

As part of the samurai attire, mainly for those of higher importance an eboshi, a silk cap-like headgear would be worn under the helmet. As the samurai during this early time of the Gempei War fought much on horseback and utilized bows and arrows, the right arm of the standard samurai soldier had no restricting protection to allow for the drawing back of the bow. A light protective sleeve was worn on the left arm.

Not all fighters during the Gempei War were of the samurai class, and therefore were equipped differently and wore a different style of lighter armor called the 'Do Maru'. A body Wrap style of armor resting on the shoulders and fastening under the right armpit was far less restricting than the yoroi. It was based on this freer design of armor that development would be made for the samurai's armor of the future.

Samurai swords

Medieval weapons, roman weapons

A samurai sword is a sword of the type commonly carried by samurai, Japanese warriors who thrived through the 1800s, when Japan was opened to trade with the West and the Japanese system of government radically changed, rendering the samurai tradition obsolete. The sword which is classically associated with samurai is a katana, a curved long-sword which was included in the war gear of most samurai. Possession of a katana was so critical that many samurai regarded their swords as extensions of their souls, and it is not surprising that the katana is viewed as the quintessential samurai swords.

The katana is so famous that some people use the term generically to refer to all Japanese swords. In fact, a Japanese sword should more properly be known as a nihonto, as there are a range of styles and classes of sword produced in Japan. Traditional swordsmithing is still very much alive in Japan, for people who are interested in seeing and studying the techniques used to produce swords in the samurai era.

In addition to the katana, which evolved from several older weapons, most samurai also carried a wakizashi, a short sword. This sidearm was also known as the "honor blade," and samurai rarely surrendered their honor blades.

Civil war weapons

Medieval armour, samurai armor, medieval shield

Infantry tactics at the time of the Civil War were based on the use of the smoothbore musket, a civil war weapons of limited range and accuracy. Firing lines that were much more than a hundred yards apart could not inflict very much damage on each other, and so troops which were to make an attack would be massed together, elbow to elbow, and would make a run for it; if there were enough of them, and they ran fast enough, the defensive line could not hurt them seriously, and when they got to close quarters the advantage of numbers and the use of the bayonet would settle things. But the Civil War musket was rifled, which made an enormous difference. It was still a muzzle-loader, but it had much more accuracy and a far longer range than the old smoothbore, and it completely changed the conditions under which soldiers fought. An advancing line could be brought under killing fire at a distance of half a mile, now, and the massed charge of Napoleonic tradition was miserably out of date. When a defensive line occupied field entrenchments-which the soldiers learned to dig fairly early in the game-a direct frontal assault became almost impossible. The hideous casualty lists of Civil War battles owed much of their size to the fact that soldiers were fighting with rifles but were using tactics suited to smoothbores. It took the generals a long time to learn that a new approach was needed.
Much the same development was taking place in the artillery, although the full effect was not yet evident. The Civil War cannon, almost without exception, was a muzzle-loader, but the rifled gun was coming into service. It could reach farther and hit harder than the smoothbore, and for counterbattery fire it was highly effective-a rifled battery could hit a battery of smoothbores without being hit in return, and the new 3-inch iron rifles, firing a 10-pound conical shot, had a flat trajectory and immense Penetrating power. But the old smoothbore-a brass gun of 4.62-inch caliber, firing a 12-pound spherical shot-remained popular to the end of the war; in the wooded, hilly country where so many Civil War battles were fought, its range of slightly less than a mile was about all that was needed, and for close-range work against infantry the smoothbore was better than the rifle. For such work the artillerist fired canisters tin can full of iron balls, with a propellant at one end and a wooden disk at the other-and the can disintegrated when the gun was fired, letting the iron balls be sprayed all over the landscape. In effect, the cannon became a huge sawed-off shotgun, and at ranges of 250 yards or less it was in the highest degree murderous.
This portion of the "Home of the American Civil War" website attempts to explain a little about the various weapons used in the Civil War and while you will find few images here, you will find a lot of good material on "the weapons of war".

History of the Helmet

Defensive covering for the head, one of the most universal forms of armor. Armor Helmets are regularly thought of as military equipment.

In northern and western Europe, early helmets were of leather reinforced with bronze or iron straps and usually took the form of conical or hemispherical skullcaps. Gradually the amount of metal increased until entire helmets were fashioned of iron, still following the same form. About the year 1200 the helm, or heaume, emerged. It was a flat-topped cylinder that was put on over the skullcap just before an engagement; experience soon dictated rounded contours that would cause blows to glance off. At the same time, the skullcap developed into the basinet, with pieces added to protect the neck and with a movable visor for the face. By 1500 several highly sophisticated types of helmets were in use, employing hinges or pivots to permit the piece to be put on over the head and then fitted snugly around head and neck so that it could not be knocked off in combat.
