Our Family Chooses a Goldendoodle and Falls in Love
My husband begged me to agree we get a dog for the family. Yup, my husband. Not the kids. He picked this somewhat ungainly, long-haired, floppy puppy. He was sweet and charming, although a bit unusual - the dog....not my husband....although, come to think of it my husband can be sweet and charming and a bit unusual, too.
"What kind of dog is this?", we asked the breeder. "A Goldendoodle", she said.
I giggled. Just say Goldendoodle out loud and you can't help yourself. I'd never heard of them before. She went on to explain that a Goldendoodle is a new "designer breed". A combination of Golden Retriever and Standard Poodle. Well, I thought to myself, I have a designer handbag - might as well get the matching dog.
We've had Apollo for 5 months now and besides being the smartest dog I've ever lived with, he's just downright hysterical.

He's the Perfect Family Pet
Goldendoodles are bred for brains and temperment

He's great company, loves to play and is the sweetest animal. He's big, kind of a klutz (like me) and will fetch for hours until he's so tired he just has to lay down next to you. I'm enchanted by his poodle-like curls and his golden retriever ears. When he cocks his head and looks at me like I've just started sprouting ivy from my eyebrows I can't help but picture the dogs my kids play with on their Nintendo Nintendogs game. (Really, it was me who played Nintendogs. I had five puppies, all well trained and I upgraded to the Outer Space home. You'd only understand what that means if you played Nintendogs yourself. Fess up.)
I did NOT like my pet when he pinned our poor five year old to the wall, though. Nearly threw that dog in the pool. Apollo must be at least twice the size of my son and I know he thinks Ryan's just a little puppy to play with but mamas don't like anything messing with their babies! We've talked about it. Apollo swears he won't do it again but just to be sure, he starts puppy classes this week.
Even President Obama and his family considered a Goldendoodle as a potential family pet:
The Boston Globe article
Chicago Tribune article
We've Learned a Few Things
We did our homework but we didn't know everything

We didn't rush into our decision to bring a dog into the home but we didn't know anything about Goldendoodles when we decided to get Apollo. We have one stay-at-home parent and three kids - a perfect environment for the right kind of dog. One son has a variety of allergies and it was explained to us that because of the Poodle mix, Goldendoodles do not shed a great deal. None of our children have had any allergic reactions to Apollo. We know a lot more now. Some other tips for future Goldendoodle owners:
The curly fur can matt easily. Brushing at least every other day helps.
Goldendoodles come in all sizes. Apollo is Standard Goldendoodle, the largest of the available sizes, and he's going to be BIG - 70-80 pounds as an adult. He was 35 pounds at 4 months and is just over 55 pounds at 9 months.
Doesn't matter to him how big he is, he's going to get on your lap.
I don't know if its Goldendoodles in general or just Apollo, but he loves to take a bath.
We have lots of dogs in our neighborhood. Some are real barkers. Apollo rarely barks.
Keep the rear end shaved. That fur catches everything, if you know what I mean.
They say the breed is very smart and Apollo bears that out. Within a week, he could sit, lay down, shake, go potty, get his ball and go night-night on command.
The Best Pet Bed
Apollo Recommends
We went through four dog beds before we found one that Apollo couldn't destroy (darn puppies!). This dog cot is really cool.
The Coolaroo Elevated Pet Bed provides immediate cushion without thickness, cannot be easily chewed (darn puppies), and comes in all sizes.Buy rubber furniture tips to put on the bottom of the legs, though. If you have a big dog who likes to run and jump onto his bed (Apollo), the rubber tips will keep the cot from sliding along the floor during the jumping-on process.
Protect Your Best Friend
Pet Insurance
The American Pet Products Association reported this past February that Americans spent over $43 Billion dollars on pet products and services in 2008. Of that figure, $11.1 Billion was spent on veterinarian services. Better treatment availability and implementation of the latest medical technologies for canine injuries and illnesses means more dogs have a better chance than ever of surviving once life-threatening conditions. With that opportunity there is an associated cost in terms of higher vet bills. To offset that cost, more Americans are finding it beneficial to obtain pet insurance and, in fact, spending on pet insurance is projected to nearly double in the next 3 years. For Apollo, the cost is less than $20/month. Take a minute now to see what it might cost to cover your pet today at Embrace Pet Insurance.
Average customer rating for Embrace Pet Insurance is 9.13 out of 10, based strongly on their generous coverage and outstanding customer service.
What Happened to Apollo's Fur?
Always double check your grooming requests
Poor Apollo. We wanted him to be extra-special clean for the holidays so we took him to the groomer. There was some confusion about our request and when we picked him up he'd been nearly completely shaved!!! I FREAKED! He didn't look the same at all. Didn't seem to phase him and his fur has since grown back considerably. And it's curlier. More poodlier. That's kind of funny. Poodlier....my little Goldendoodlier.
We love you, Apollo!

Soccer Playing Dog
Apollo's only real challenge in life is how to get two toys in his mouth at the same time. It's only a problem when he wants his soccer ball plus anything else. He's given up on that particular objective and now carries one toy in his mouth and kicks the soccer ball along. It occasionally ends up in the pool. That truly boggles his mind. This video is Apollo showing off his soccer skills.
Goldendoodle Rescue Services
In case you were moved by the video...you can help!
Rescue groups help people find new homes for animals the owner can no longer keep. I've found two rescue organizations specific to Goldendoodles.
- Doodle Rescue and Rehomes Board
- A rescue group specializing in Goldendoodle, Labradoodle and other poodle hybrids. The board connects those who need to find a new home for their pet with those looking to rescue them.
- IDOG Rescue
- A not-for-profit organization founded by the International Doodle Owners Group, Inc. Provides information for doodle owners as well as a listing of all doodles needing new homes.

- We just got Reggie from a rescue when he was 12 weeks old. His mother escaped a puppy mill when she was pregnant and had 3 puppies in a field. Someone took them to the rescue and I found him on Petfinders. He is apricot with a white nose and chest. He is so smart and trainable. We also have a 12-year old 10-pound bichon and he chases her all over, grabbing for her tail and ears. Gets a bit rough, so much that the bichon had a trip to the vet with a cut cornea. But they are getting to be good buddies. We had a lab and a kuvasz which we miss dearly so we are used to big dogs. Reggie is now 5 months and 35 pounds. We do not know how big he will be eventually. Love the doodle!

- I love your Goldendoodle! Love poodles and Goldens, so it makes perfect sense. A fair amount of people have labradoodles around here. Love them too. My mom raised poodles, the toy ones and they are really smart, so it probably helps the golden become even smarter. I have a Bichon (cousins of Poodles and Maltese) and a Yorkie. Small everything, know what I mean? lol

- I seriously recommend getting a Goldendoodle. Our Goldendoodle is like a big cuddly bear. Everything is this article describes our Goldendoodle to a tee. Yes, he thinks he's a lap dog. haha! He was very easy to train, but doesn't do well on a leash. He just gets wayyy too excited to go for walks. Good luck in finding your new fluffy baby.

- A goldendoodle simply MUST be one very special breed given that golden retrievers are actually angels in a canine body. Then the poodle part creates curls out of the massive golden hair so that it doesn't shed as badly and voila... goldendoodle, a curly angel canine.
