- We just got Reggie from a rescue when he was 12 weeks old. His mother escaped a puppy mill when she was pregnant and had 3 puppies in a field. Someone took them to the rescue and I found him on Petfinders. He is apricot with a white nose and chest. He is so smart and trainable. We also have a 12-year old 10-pound bichon and he chases her all over, grabbing for her tail and ears. Gets a bit rough, so much that the bichon had a trip to the vet with a cut cornea. But they are getting to be good buddies. We had a lab and a kuvasz which we miss dearly so we are used to big dogs. Reggie is now 5 months and 35 pounds. We do not know how big he will be eventually. Love the doodle!

- I love your Goldendoodle! Love poodles and Goldens, so it makes perfect sense. A fair amount of people have labradoodles around here. Love them too. My mom raised poodles, the toy ones and they are really smart, so it probably helps the golden become even smarter. I have a Bichon (cousins of Poodles and Maltese) and a Yorkie. Small everything, know what I mean? lol

- I seriously recommend getting a Goldendoodle. Our Goldendoodle is like a big cuddly bear. Everything is this article describes our Goldendoodle to a tee. Yes, he thinks he's a lap dog. haha! He was very easy to train, but doesn't do well on a leash. He just gets wayyy too excited to go for walks. Good luck in finding your new fluffy baby.

- A goldendoodle simply MUST be one very special breed given that golden retrievers are actually angels in a canine body. Then the poodle part creates curls out of the massive golden hair so that it doesn't shed as badly and voila... goldendoodle, a curly angel canine.

- We had a Pommypoo we named Peanut because he was the runt of the litter and soooo small. The poodle parent was a teacup poodle, I think, and of course you know how small Poms are. Loved reading about your GoldenDoodle. I wonder if there's a dog with a name that begins with Yankee ... because I think a YankeeDoodle would be a dandy. *wink*

- I loved reading About Apollo, very funny!!!
We too have a goldendoodle, Neyland, a 5 month old bundle of laughes.
If anyone out there is considering getting this breed, you can't go wrong. When reading about Apollo, it was as if I was reading about us. A big baby is how I describe ours. He sulks and pouts just like a child when he gets in trouble. I have always had labs, but will never own anything else from this day forward. I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed reading your article ;)

- So glad you enjoyed the stories! Apollo is 3 now and still a barrel of laughs. He did so well going through training that he's the easiest dog we've ever had. He follows instructions so well. He is, however, HUGE. At about 110 pounds, he's a small horse so it's a good thing he's easy and gentle. I'm sure you'll find Neyland stays just as sweet over time, as well. Thanks for stopping by!

- I've been owned by two golden retrievers, both now gone to doggie heaven and miss them SO much. Was considering a goldendoodle and learned a LOT here, very well done. Best to you and Apollo too!

- crosscreations - Glad this helped! We love Apollo and he continues to be the sweetest, smartest dog we've ever had the pleasure of knowing. Sorry to hear about your golden retrievers but I know that you'll always have them in your heart and that they've helped pave the way for a new friend, too.
Sincerely,
Erica

- After having a Golden Retriever for 12 1/2 years, who was the most perfect dog ever. It was hard to replace her. But we decided on Goldendoodles to have the personality without the shedding. I did have some issues with my Max but Mallie is perfect. Now at 1 1/2, Max has gotten much, much better. He had some trust and jealousy, but with a LOT of love, he has overcome that. They are very loving and smart. Max needs a lot of attention and would sit on a lap all day if he could. Getting 2 at the same time was a lot of work, but so glad I did now, they are best buddies.

- Cyndee - Wow, two at once! More power to you! I think that would have been too much for me. We knew Apollo was going to be big based on his parentage but we thought he might top out at 80-90 pounds. He's currently 110 and it's not from being overweight. He thinks he's a lapdog, too, so we had to work with him about where he could and could not park himself in the house. When we need him to settle, we just tell him to go to his "Place" and he does. It is nice that your two can keep themselves company, though. Good luck with them and thanks for sharing!
Sincerely,
Erica

- I have a sweet Goldendoodle name Luke and he is just awsome. They are very smart breeds and very family friendly. My Luke loves everyone including other animals. Did you ever find out what to tell the groomer when you need to get him cut for the summer (like a specific cut name)? To be more specific, everytime i take him they shave him so low where he barely has any fur covering his skin and I worry he could get skin infection or something, plus he looks so different. Thanks in advance!

- Luke looks adorable! Sounds like he's a gem, too. They are extremely smart, aren't they? Apollo surprises us regularly with something new he's figured out. He's so eager to please, too. Our big guy is now over 100 pounds and with the dry, hot weather we do take his fur down very short. Our current groomer cuts based on a number scale and we do a two. His fur has gotten very coarse and curly as he's grown. So far he has not developed any skin infections as a result of the short fur. During the winter, we only do a three, not that it gets very cold here but I figure if our blood adapts to the extreme heat, his probably has, too.

- Thanks for your comment, and yes I agree working with Max is a must. He is extremely intelligent, he learned many basic commands by 10 weeks. I feel this is some of why he is doing this, because HE CAN lol. I have also used the shake of the back of the neck when he growls or doesn't listen, this seems to help to a point. I'm continuing to work at it. They were both just spayed and neutered, and when healed, we're planning on some obedience classes. Hopefully this will help both of them.

- Cyndee - How cute are those names!? I think I just saw somewhere that Max was one of the most popular dog names but you put that with Mallie and it's just a neat sounding pair.
Since we have only the one, we didn't run into quite the same issues you did. I'll share with you what I know and maybe some others will chime in and help us out.
As to puppy biting, we did have some of that and we used first one approach and then another to get past it. The first approach was one we used when I was little and we had dogs in the house. My parents (or maybe it was my grandparents) would have us ball our hands into a fist if the puppy was nipping at our hand. If they have your hand in their mouth and you ball it up to spread their mouth as open as possible, they may stop and eventually will get tired of doing it when it results in their jaw being wedged by your balled up fist.
The trainer gave us a different approach to use with both nipping and jumping. If Apollo was biting on our hand, she would have us pull our hand away and say "Ouch!" seriously and loudly. With jumping, we used a similar approach. If he jumped up on us, we'd turn our backs to him and say "Ouch!". This seemed to work over time.
As for the bone aggression, I'd work with Max over and over to get him to drop the bone when he has it and reward him when he drops it. It is amazing how smart these dogs are and if you focus on rewarding the positive they respond really well to training at this stage.
Good luck!

- Hi, I have 2 Goldendoodles, they are absolutely adorable. Max is 5 1/2 months, and Mallie is 5 months, obviously 2 different litters. My question is that because they both play so rough with each other, they still tend to be quite mouthy (puppy biting) with us, the humans. Also, Max seems to have a bit of possession aggression, and growls and snaps with certain bones. Does anyone have suggestions, or have you dealt with this with other goldendoodles?

- We have a 10 1/2 month old goldendoodle and absolutely adore him. I call him my gentle giant. He is a lovebug and just the greatest! We have never had a dog before and were nervous about it, I don't know if we just got super lucky, but he is the greatest dog ever! He's smart, cute and very affectionate. He's also great with my 5 and 7 year old. He loves to play with them and he will fetch for hours. Sometimes at 9pm at night he is trying to get me to throw things for him to fetch...retreiver in his blood. Anyways just ahd to comment on what a cool, gentle, sweet, affectionate and loving breed the goldendoodles are. I will never not own one for the rest of my life! Goldendoodle/dog lover forever!!

- Thanks for your comments, guys! I've had more fun putting this lens together than my others and appreciate the supportive comments. Sulynsi, the Goldendoodle website does in fact make note of the fact that many organizations are using Goldendoodles as companions including Guide Dogs of America. You were spot on!

- Goldens and Labs are both very easy to train, and are focused on their family. They are usually eager to please. Well trained, they are steady loyal companions. Poodles are very intelligent and active. They also, of course, have the low shed, hypo-allergenic coat. Interestingly, these blened qualities could greatly benefit people who would need assist dogs, such as guide dogs for the blind. I wouldn't be surprised if the breed was developed with these needs in mind.
Nice furry lens :)
