Menieres and Other Health Problems

When the fluid volume in the portion of the inner ear called the labyrinth fluctuates, the Menieres symptoms occur. The exact cause of this inner ear chronic disorder is not known, although it is associated with circulation problems, viral infections, allergies, autoimmune reaction, and migraine. Furthermore, too much salt in the diet, stress, emotional distress, and pressure changes are known to trigger attacks of the condition.

Two notable symptoms of Menieres Disease are tinnitus and vertigo, although hearing fluctuation and fullness in the ears also mark an attack of the disorder.

Vertigo

In simple terms, vertigo is a spinning sensation, and is usually a result of a balance disorder. On the average, it lasts from two to four hours. After an episode, the sufferer usually feels exhausted and gets to sleep for hours and in some cases, days. Some experience its episodes in clusters, which means that several episodes may take place within a short period of time. There are others, on the other hand, that a long period of time (weeks, months, years) may pass between episodes of this spinning sensation. A particularly disabling case is when the sufferer falls to the ground involuntarily.

Attacks of vertigo are unpredictable, so it can impede your tasks or activities. To prepare the people in your immediate environment when you experience an attack, tell and make them understand about it so that they know what to expect and what to do.

Tinnitus

People who have tinnitus perceive a usually ringing sound even though there is no external source. Together with hearing fluctuations and a sense of fullness in the ears, it may precede a Meniere's Disease attack. While it may just come and go for some, others may experience it permanently that their day-to-day living get affected.

Looking at the Menieres symptoms, we may have observed that these symptoms can get in the way of our everyday lives as they are unpredictable. There are ways, though, to prevent them from taking place. One of the best ways to control them is to have a diet that would help stabilize the body fluid or blood levels, thus avoiding secondary inner ear fluid fluctuations. The steps that you must take include:

1. avoiding the consumption of foods or fluids that have high salt or sugar contents;
2. drinking sufficient amount of fluid daily, good sources of which include water, milk, and low-sugar fruit juices; and
3. aiming for a diet high in fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
