One Of The Most Influential Films Ever

Metropolis is known for being a groundbreaking Science Fiction film from the silent era. Metropolis' golden robot Maria is iconic and even recognized by people who don't know what movie she appeared in. Most people don't realize how influential the movie has been even on movies coming out today - even contributing a special effect used in the Lord of The Rings trilogy.
Did I mention the topic of class struggle, human rights, and the illusion of reality? This visionary film covers corporate America before the term even existed.

"Between the mind that plans and the hands that build there must be a Mediator, and this must be the heart."

"Metropolis" & Special Effects: The Schüfftan Process

It really IS all done with mirrors!

"The Schüfftan process is a movie special effect named after its inventor, Eugen Schüfftan (1893-1977). It was widely used in the first half of the 20th century before being almost completely replaced by the travelling matte and bluescreen effects." Schüfftan Process

The Schüfftan process involves using a backdrop reflected by a partial mirror (glass that is strategically mirrored) angled in a way that allows the actors to appear to walk through the backdrop's imagery.

This process has been used as recently as the Lord of The Rings trilogy, despite the availability of CGI.

Influenced By Fritz Lang's "Metropolis": Superman

According to Jim Steranko's foreword to Superman: Archive Editions, Volume 1, Superman's Metropolis was named after the Metropolis of the 1927 science fiction film. The look of Superman's Metropolis is similar as well.

The Superman Super Site - Fritz Lang's Metropolis
"Dualism is a running theme amongst many of the characters, who demonstrate that they cannot be confined to the rigid class system of the city. The workers are dehumanised, existing either as part of a mob or as work-units, almost part of the machines themselves (the shots of them working do not let the viewer see their faces), and yet they are also human beings who are being exploited...
...Maria expresses this theme most literally of all by being physically replicated as a robot. As such, the naive ideal of creating a simple and rigid system of life where everyone fits neatly into their role is shown to be a fallacy."
Movie Diva: Metropolis
"Inspired by the skyline of 1920s Manhattan, Lang created a throbbing, dystopian uber-city of the year 2000, where a decadent aristocracy thrives on the sweat of laboring hoards underground."
