Examiner Review of Sprint MiFi 2200
Verdict: Excellent Service in Remote Location
Steven Grady, of the Examiner, wrote about his experience with his Novatel Mifi 2200. Steven has the $60/month data plan through Sprint and was able to thoroughly test the MiFi's connection while traveling across Arizona:
"Right now, I'm on the road with my National Guard unit for our Annual Training. This particular trip is taking us all over Arizona, and at the moment, I'm writing from a hotel room in Green Valley, AZ (about 30 minutes south of Tucson). I've never heard of Green Valley, so I was worried about the hotel offering wifi internet access (they do, but it's painfully slow). Alas, the MiFi from Sprint was purchased for this exact reason! Packed among my laptop, my Palm Pre and my iPod Touch, the MiFi occupied one of my jean pockets for the trip from Phoenix, and for the entirety of the 2.5 hour drive, I had high speed internet on my iPod Touch, allowing me to stream Pandora for the drive, as well as download some songs from the Amazon Music store on my Palm Pre (what is this $1.29 song nonsense iTunes?). The MiFi performed flawlessly, even in areas where signal dropped to two or three bars.
"Here in Green Valley, the signal in my room is sitting pretty at 5 bars, and my iPod, laptop and Pre couldn't be happier. In the habitual and constant speed tests I run, I average 1.2 Mbps download speeds, and about 600 up. If I wanted to, I could share the connection with two more of my fellow soldiers and I have a feeling that I wouldn't really need to worry about slowed connections for my personal devices. The MiFi seems to manage the connections well enough that the numerous Firefox tabs I have open on my laptop don't slow down the photo sending from my Pre or my App updates on my iPod Touch."
Steven, traveler to remote desert locations, seems to be one more happy MiFi user!

First GSM MiFi Launched
Novatel Wireless MiFi 2532 Available Through Telefonica Espana
June 17, 2009Two days ago, Telefonica Espana launched the Novatel Wireless MiFi 2532, the first GSM compatible MiFi.
The MiFi 2532 will support triband HSPA (900/1900/2100Mhz) and quadband GPRS/EDGE (850/900/1800/1900Mhz). The MiFi 2352 will also be SIM-unlocked, so there will be strong network support around the globe.
Telefonica Espana will provide support for widgets and applications through the MiFi 2532's launch page, along with unhampered microSD access.
The MiFi 2532 will run a Linux OS, meaning the personal hotspot can host applications coded by third-parties. With the MiFi 2532's onboard GPS, third-parties should provide a well-rounded selection of location-based applications.
Download speeds average 7.2 Mbps, and upload speeds average 5.76 Mbps on HSPA networks.

What is the Novatel MiFi 2200?
David Pogue, of the New York Times, recently reviewed the Novatel MiFi 2200, writing that "It's always exciting when someone invents a new product category, and this one is a jaw-dropper."That new product--the MiFi--is a spectacular cellular Internet modem and wireless router in one tiny box.
Connecting to high-speed cellular data networks, the MiFi brings broadband-speed Internet directly to you, wherever you may be. Once the MiFi connects to a cellular data network, it works as a battery-powered 802.11 b/g WiFi hotspot. Up to five separate devices, up to 30 feet away, can connect to the MiFi.
Simple, hassle-free usability was a goal in the MiFi's development. Turning the MiFi on and establishing an Internet connection is as easy as pressing the power button. Your laptop, desktop, PDA, phone, iPhone, iPod, or other gadget can automatically connect to the MiFi as soon as a signal is detected.
Rather than giving yourself carpal tunnel attempting to type message after message on a cramped phone keyboard, and rather than testing the limits of your patience by loading Internet pages on your Blackberry, you can do those things with the comfort and speed of a laptop or netbook.
And the MiFi is super portable, being about the size of a few stacked credit cards. Some users have already commented that they keep their MiFi in their wallets!
With the MiFi, commuting doesn't have to be wasted idle time. Carpoolers and commuters can work on a train, bus, or in a car. Road trips are quieter and more fun, since children can connect to Internet games on their Nintendo DS or Sony PSP. Computer users can bring laptops and enjoy a stable Internet connection.
The MiFi is simply the easiest, most innovative way to connect multiple people and devices to the Internet anywhere a 3G cellular network can be found.

How Fast Is The Novatel MiFi 2200?
MiFi Speed Varies, But On Average Fast
The Novatel MiFi 2200 has been nearly ubiquitously praised for the speed it provides its users. The MiFi is able to handle most applications without hiccups, from email to video to Internet browsing. Some of the praise the MiFi has recieved follows:"The best thing about the MiFi 2200 isn't the portability or design. It's the speed....we connected our laptop to the MiFi 2200 over Wi-Fi and saw download speeds approaching 2.6Mbps. That's the fastest download speeds we've ever seen on a U.S. network, whether over a cell phone or USB modem." InfoSync
"We saw about 1.5 to 1.8Mbps down and 350 to 400kbps up while using the MiFi in downtown Chicago, with virtually no difference between WiFi and tethered mode" Endgadget
"The speed is impressive, and perfectly acceptable for almost any web or email application you'd want to run. In fact, the speed is fast enough for 5 people to get online and surf the web, without any noticeable delays." Gadling
"In the case of data transfer speeds, the MiFi card performed admirably. It's not as fast as a broadband connection from the cable company, but it's still pretty fast and certainly fast enough to do what you need to do on the go." Top10Reviews
"Up to five devices can share the MiFi connection simultaneously, although they share the single 3G pipe. I have connected three devices with no detectable lag, so I don't think five would be too heavy a burden for the MiFi" JKontherun.com
