Mia Michaels has been a choreographer on "So You Think You Can Dance" (SYTYCD) since the start of the show through Season Five. She has choreographed some audience favorites, including an Emmy Award Winning contemporary dance. Mia was also a judge on the show. Mia's dances have been truly inspiring, including the "Bench Dance" with Heidi and Travis, The "Father Dance" with Neil and Lacey, and "Gravity" with Kayla and Kupono. This lens is part of a series including the choreographers from the Fox Reality Show SYTYCD. I'm a huge dance fan, and addicted to Reality TV. I've really admired the choreography on the show and for the first five seasons before I started creating lenses about SYTYCD, I wondered, "Where did these great choreographers come from?"
So the purpose of this series of lenses is to provide a short biography of each choreographer, and to remind you of their work on the show.

Mia Michaels was born in Coconut Grove, Florida in 1965, to a family of dancers. Her father Joe Michaels taught her jazz, tap and ballet from the age of two. Her sister Dana Michaels taught Mia for several years in contemporary dance. For years she attended summer sessions at Interlochen Center for the Arts and Jacob's Pillow.
Mia Michaels is the choreographer for Celine Dion's "A New Day" show at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas and has created routines for a cast of 50 dancers, as well as for Celine Dion. Michaels has worked with artists such as Madonna, Ricky Martin, Gloria Estefan and Prince. She is the founder, artistic director and choreographer for the critically acclaimed New York-based dance company RAW and has held faculty positions at the Alvin Ailey Dance Company and the International Dance Festival of Italy.

- Mia is exotic, creative and just plain amazing, I thought she was the show's best choreographer. Perhaps "gifted" would be the best word for her phenomenal talent.

- Mia is an amazingly creative person in touch with her deepest self. No one in their normal mind or state can bring this sort of creation out in the world to see unless they have a phenomenal grasp of vision and reality. Sad she is not a judge anymore as I always looked forward to her comments on SYTYCD.

- Mia was definitely my first favorite choreographer on SYTYCD, but some of the others are getting to be really amazing as well (thinking especially of this past season - season 7, i think?). SYTYCD is one of my favorite shows of all time, and waiting for a new season is always tough. In the meantime we can watch the videos .. thanks for a super lens!

- I was so unhappy to hear that Mia was leaving So You Think You can Dance. My favorite pieces have always been the ones that she choreographed. She has a unique vision and will be missed.

- Mia's dances have so much feeling and generate so much emotion. I've forgiven her for what she said to Brandon, even though I really can't believe she said it because it was not in the least objective, but I haven't forgotten that she said it. It still can't take away from her brilliant choreography...and I think she felt bad when she looked back at what she said because she did apologize and tell him that she thought he was great.

- simplifly(i love mia),she is amazing in all ways & she has a real amazing complex mind,she is more wonderful as aperson than a choreographer..somehow i agree with those who said that she is crazy,strange&maybe anti-life(as i read)but in the end though she is mere successful woman ...she take more than 1 place in our hearts

- Regardless of what she says or what she thinks of someone, she is one of the best to ever grace the dance world. I get excited just by the mentioning of her name as the choreographer of ANY dance routine, performance or show. I wasn't a big fan of Brandon's either... he seemed too cocky, like he had it in the bag from the beginning. She is RIGHT. If a dancer thinks they are the BEST they are lost. He would not have challenged himself to be better. In the dance world "great" is simply not enough. PHENOMENAL is what it's going to take to reach real stardom. I love Mia's style, expression, emotional outbursts, and creativity. And she brings out the best in those who are fortunate enough to be able to say "I danced a Mia Michaels choreographed number!" Love Ya Mia! Where were you when I was dancing???? ha ha ha.

- Mia do not apologize. What she said was, somthingh to the effect that "we teachers are hardest on our best students" That's B.S. because she definately did no want him on the show, but is now saying she thought he was the best. She's a bully and a liar.
