Mid-Autumn Festival is a harvest festival celebrate amongst the Chinese. Some referred it as Lantern Festival or Mooncake Festival. It falls on the 15th day of the eighth month on the lunar calendar. It happen to be on the 3th October in 2009.

What you do on that day?
Bring kids out for a lantern walk. Play with candles.
Businessmen will give boxes of mooncakes to their clients.

How to make your own mooncake

Snow Skin Mini Mooncake

Snow skin mini mooncake is a type of mooncake that do not need any baking.

Main Ingredients:

250g Icing Sugar
125g Rice flour (fried)
50g Crisco
a few drops banana essence
110g cool water (boiled)
a few drop green coloring
1kg Red bean paste or lotus paste
Salted egg yolk (optional)

Method

1) Sift the rice flour and the icing sugar into a mixing bowl. Mix them well.
2) Mix the water, coloring and banana essence thoroughly.
3) Make a well in the centre of the flour. Pour in the liquid mixture and crisco.
4) Stir quickly with a wooden spoon. Keep the dough aside for 20 to 30 minutes.
5) Cut the dough into small round pieces.
6) Prepare the filling into small balls.
7) Put a portion of the filling into the centre of the dough and seal it up.
8) Roll it with some fried rice flour and place the dough into the mold, press it.
9) Let the dough out of the mold carefully. You have a mooncake.

Mooncake tins & boxes can be so pretty that you will want to keep them.

I cannot remember how many mooncakes this tin use to contain. I have now use the box to store some of my photos and travelling tickets I have collected from Japan.

This mooncake tin can contain 2 standard size mooncakes. The box can be use to keep your color pencils, markers, pens after you have finish the mooncake.

This tin can contain 4 mooncakes. I have used this square tin to store my table tennis stuffs and it fit perfectly.

This tin can contain only 1 mooncake. The box is perfect for my small sewing items.

Different Type of Kids Lantern

My mom brought this plane lantern for my son during Mid-Autumn Festival in 2008. The lantern will have sound and light when you switch them on. This type of lantern is suitable for toddlers and preschool because they are safe and you do not have to deal with candles and fire. However, a bigger kid might find this type of lantern boring.

This is my son's lantern in 2007. After a lantern walk in the garden downstair, my son refuse to carry his lantern so we hang his lantern on his t-shirt.

This lantern was given by my son great grandma in 2007. It is actually not suitable for toddler as they are easily broken. I guess our traditional elders love the sight of a lion dance.

This is a traditional paper lantern that you have to put a real candle inside and light it with fire. Not suitable for very young kids but it is still a very popular lantern among the older kids. I still remember I have burn down quite a few of these lanterns when I was younger.
