The Amazing Mike Holmes Is A God Among Contractors.
Not only does he help hundreds of Canadians who are stuck with shoddy workmanship from unreputable contractors but he goes the extra mile (or ten miles in his case) to get the job done right. As Mike says "If you're going to do something, do it right the first time!".
Not only is Mike a great contractor but he also frequently uses his own money to 'make it right' during his show Holmes on Homes which, to me, is the ultimate level of professionalism.
The other great thing about Mike is his eye for detail. Without any prompting from an interior designer he knows exactly what will 'work' and how it should look. As he would say he needs to think 10 steps ahead of the game!
Do you buy a car that has minimum tires, minimum engine, minimum seat belts? No we don't, we want to buy better. I think the issue with new homes and older homes is not knowing if the minimum code is enough. Well I've proved it over and over again that it's not.

Some Things You May Not Have Known About Mike Holmes
In early 2009 Mike decided to open a home inspection business in response to the mounting number of complaints he has received which continue to grow every day. The company, fantastically titled, Holmes Inspections is currently only operating in Toronto, Ontario, but hopefully he will open other locations across Canada in the near future.
Mike is a great supporter of environmentally friendly homes which are also energy efficient. With this in mind Mike has been supervising the construction of a sustainable community near Okotoks, Alberta. If all goes well we could see Mike Holmes built homes all across Canada in the near future.
Although living in Canada, which is famous for Tim Hortons coffee, Mike is actually a spokesperson for Nescafe and has been since 2006.
Mike is currently working in New Orleans to help rebuild the communities that were devastated during hurricane Katrina. Because of Mikes motto of doing things right, he is supervising the construction of 'hurricane proof' housing, the first of which was completed before Hurricane Gustav hit New Orleans in 2008. Thankfully the house came through the storm with flying colors!
On February 21 2008, Mike Holmes received an Honorary Doctorate of Technology from the British Columbia Institute of Technology.
Because Mike knows how important it is to have properly trained and skilled workers in the contracting arena he started the Holmes Foundation which grants annual scholarships which are used to train skilled workers. It is also able to perform charitable renovation projects for community centers that are in dire need of help.

Finding a good contractor is hard work. Don't go looking for services that claim to make that work easier for you - it's the hard work that you put into the process that helps get the job off on the right foot. Leaving that work undone, or leaving it to others, is a recipe for a bad job.

Mike Holmes Is The Man!
I've only lived in Canada for a short time, however in this time Mike has inspired me to know more about the regulations regarding building code and the practices of the good guys in the contracting arena.
Although my main profession is computers I am seriously considering becoming a contractor, not because Mike makes it look so easy, but because I believe that Canada needs more contractors that care about the work they do and want to make it right for clients who are spending serious amounts of money on their homes and need them to be safe as well as beautiful.

- Here's an idea, invite some of " unskilled" contractors that already take up space in Canada to to go to a reputable school to learn the correct way to do their craft and give themselves a reputation makeover, or just go out of business. maybe they were born without a conscience. Thanks for the opportunity!
