- Miletus reached its greatest extension in the 7th century BC, when the urban area stretched from the peak of Humeitepe hill in the north as far as Kalabaktepe in the south. When the city was rebuilt after its destruction by the Persians in 494 BC, it was laid out according to orthogonal principles -just as previously in Archaic period- as a grid with blocks of houses (insulae) and streets arranged at right angels.
