Mirena side effects. MY Story

My Horror Story, Help is here

type=textHello I have a site to help women with side effects caused by Mirena ,if you need some info have a look.
I had mirena for over 4 years and had BAD Side effects, like thousands of other women, have a look at the site and judge for your self.

MY STORY

My Mirena was removed on 29th May 2008.

I had the Mirena put in four years ago,I had terrible pain the day after, it was that bad I was going to go to the hospital Emergency to get the thing out but I put up(the worst thing I done in my life, Im paying for it now) with it and it and the pain got a bit better, had a lot of bleeding (spotting) for the first six months and then it finally went away. For the first year I thought Mirena was Great but then the problems started.I started to gain a lot of weight, facial hair,Very sore breasts, I also had a lump removed from my left breast a couple of years ago, but I didnt know until recently that it was most likely caused by Mirena. Some of the other problems I had, My stomach bloated, I look like I'm six months pregnant ,I have a cyst on my left ovary, dry skin, acne, strange depression, headaches, and the Worst of all I had to have my Thyroids REMOVED on 1st Nov 2006 and I'm pretty sure that was caused by Mirena as well, so now I have to take thyroid Medication for the rest of my life,I had the Mirena removed as soon as I done some searching on the internet for my unexplained medical problems, mainly my weight as I had weighed about the same my whole adult life and now I had put on a few stone and now I have to try and lose it,as for my thyroid I have trouble getting the Meds right its a real pain, blood tests all the time.I just dont feel I have much left in my life, depressed, sick all the time. I eat well as I have high cholesterol so its not that I over ate,I noticed you do feel a lot more like eating sweet things. I found a site called curezone and found out there are thousands of woman, girls with the same problems as myself and that there is a class action law suit going on to Sue. Its worth having a look at this site it helped me a lot.I feel so bad I dont go out anymore I dont see friends or family I'm to depressed about my weight now. I am in the process of trying to find out if there is a Class Action Law Suit in Australia. If anyone knows of a Class Action in Australia could they Please let me know. After having the Mirena removed about 6 weeks ago I thought I was doing ok only a bit of spotting, but about 3 weeks after having it removed I got my period and the pain was unbearable,I was in agony stomach cramps and I bleed so much I thought I was going to die from blood loss, also the scariest was the huge blood clots, very scary, must of been four years of period in 1 week I couldnt believe how bad it was, I felt really sick and weak, but thank goodness its eased off now after a week. I just hope now I might slowly start and feel like my old self. Im also on medication for heart palpatations thanks to Mirena,I get Heart palpitations (SVT) a few times a week,I had my heart palpitations just after my thyroid removal op and was put on ecg and my heart rate was 176 Beats per Minute I was rushed to Intensive Care and I had to have an injection called Impending Doom (It makes you feel you are going to die) to slow my heart rate,it worked and I was kept in intensive car for 3 days, very scary thing to go through I hope I never have to go through that again,my heart palpitations got worse while I was on Mirena and now I also take Magnesium to help control them as well as Metoprolol which I have been on for some years and I recently read that if you are on Mirena it increases the side effects of Metoprolol.

So if you have had any bad experiences with Mirena please let us know,it will help others with their problems, hopefully. I just wish I never got Mirena and my advice is DONT its not Worth the risk,if the Doctors had of told me about the BAD side effects I would NEVER of had it put in. Sorry about going on so long, Good Luck to you all,

Thanks Net.

UPDATE

I have had it out nearly a year now my painful breasts feel normal again,I hav'nt lost any weight yet, but will soon hopefully,I do feel a lot better but still get some of the symtoms back just before my period,my heart palpitations have stopped nearly I dont get them very often anymore so I KNOW Mirena was causing it.

I get sooo mad when i think of what Mirena done to me and all the other women and how bad some of their side effects have been. I get mad when i read some of the other ladies stories and the terrible things they have gone through ,

Perforations,Miscarriages,IUD's lost in their body,

Hystorectomy, and the rest. I want to wish them all the best, and we WILL get Better and Bayer ,Mirena will PAY some day for what they have done to US..

mirena-side-effects-support.synthasite.com

Latest Update Oct 2010
I had a hystorectomy earlier this year, best thing I ever done, wish I had done it before listening to the Dr and trying Mirena,No more periods ever again :)

I had vaginal hysterectomy,only in hospital for 3 days,it was a breeze.

Its now April 2011, I had surgery (ablation) on my heart to stop the palpitations a few months ago,so far it seems to of worked I haven't had palpitations since. The op involves having wire put into a vein through your groin and up into your heart and they heat up the spot causing the problem and that fixes it, a bit scary as you are awake while having it done and you have to lay flat on your back for 8 hours after, but I'm glad thats done.
I am still having trouble loosing the Mirena weight, I'm working on it.
I'm still warning women of the possible side effects even years after, because of what it done to me......

Ultrasound of my breast lump, caused by Mirena.

I just found out I have another 2cm lump in my left breast, tests ordered for next week, fingers crossed.

ECG Results showing my palpitaions which got worse with Mirena in, 176 Beats Per Minute

This happened just after I had my thyroids removed and I got put in Critical care unit for 2 days,I had to have injection to put my heart back to its normal rate.

Let me know your side effects

  • Thanks for the great info...
  • It's a real a torture story that you have shared. I think the folks women out there will certainly benefit from it.
  • I had mirena removed Oct. 8 2012 I didn't know about any of these side effects when I got it. luckily I haven't noticed any lumps in my breast or my thyroid however I do have the stress depression anxiety weight gain hair growth.. but my big question I have yet to start my period its march... 5 months ive take several pregnancy tests all come back negative.
  • I have never heard about Mirena.
PS: I can hear you all laughing at this ignorant man :)
  • A lot of women haven't heard of it either :) You are not ignorant :)
  • I have not heard of Mirena, but know now to steer clear. Thanks for putting this together and calling attention to this issue. You've no doubt helped a lot of women.
  • Thank you,it has definitely helped. :)
  • I had Mirena for 4 years, had it removed June 2012. I WISH I had only known ALL of the side effects before hand. Skin problems(melasma), weight gain(50lbs in less then 6months)back problems, and more importantly thyroid problems. I actually went today to get my 6month biopsy done AGAIN! I have been getting it checked AND biopsys for the past year now. The Dr's will tell you they arent related.LIES! Since having it removed, nothing has gotten better, I believe they have gotten worse. I did see one of those lawyer advertisements on tv a few weeks ago and I called, just to get some info. Since then I have signed on with a lawyer. NO amount of $ will fix what has been destroyed, its the point behind it all. I am going to have to deal with this thyroid issue for ever, and who knows what my results are going to be, the stress and everything else this thing has caused isnt right! Women need to be WARNED! not sat down and talked into getting it, as if its the best thing since sliced bread. Its really sad what Dr's will do for $.

again, this is tasha, it should be some one out there that can help people like us!that dont have yet serious complacataiton as of yet but do have achs and pains in upper neck discoloration of the skin ,weight gain , and hair loss and menpause due to mirena i.u.d i fill that the main company should be accountable for not telling people of the sideeffects, just to get paid to mess up other peoples life!period
  • 18 months since having my Mirena removed. And yet I STILL experience Cervix problems: I spot for 7 days before each period, then 7 days afterward.

Have been to GPs and specialists. Have had tests. No-one knows why. No-one can fix it.

In effect, I am bleeding for 3 weeks per month.

So, for those women thinking about getting a Mirena, this is what you're risking....

Even if you're thinking, "Oh I can just get it removed if I don't like it", well... This could happen to you.

Please, please, please - don't do this to your bodies, no matter what any doctor or specialist tells you.

Listen to Annette and listen to this website.

    It's not worth it. EVER.
  • hi,my name is tasha, and i have mirena, and have had it three years,im just getting problems,
I have pigment of the skin, hair loss, weight gain, pigment in my face and hands! have a apponitment for it to be removed, went to the doctor and they said its a rash and non specific skin eruption782.1 what ever that is! my color is changeing fast also menopause systoms please help if you know of a lawer to deal with such cases due to mirena 510-372-3123
  • inbox me your email addess and I will send you the info on my lawyer.
  • Not too long ago this was recommended to me, I didn't read your Lense, but did lots of research and decided there was no way I wanted the risks associated with Mirena. I'm glad your Lense exists for others to read. Many Blessings
  • Hi Annette
    Season's Greetings to you.
I continue to support this site since I had a Mirena in mid-2011 (removed 9 weeks later).
I continue to experience grief which permanently effects me from the Mirena, namely problems in the Cervix - Chronic Cervicitis, Strep B, Bleeding and Spotting from the cervix and back pain. There is nothing that can be done, as I don't tolerate the astringent and harsh antibiotics needed to treat anaerobic bacteria.

These problems are all directly 100% attributed to the Mirena, as confirmed by specialist.

So, I am continuing to be ANTI-Mirena!!!

It is often frustrating and unhelpful when I see women (on this message board) singing praises and glory to the Mirena and boasting of it's brilliance. Although it may be useful for a minority of women, on the whole, the Mirena is NOT effective and causes nothing but further health problems in so many women.

It is good that you have created this site, Annette and it's a shame that people use it to SUPPORT the Mirena, at times.

Merry Xmas, Annette :-) and thanks again.
  • Thank you Fionnula, seasons greetings and have a Happy New year,I'm glad you still follow the comments here,I still suffer as well just like you and hundreds of other women,I even wonder if Mirena had something to do with me having to have back surgery last year.
As for the women who praise it they probably haven't had it in long and I sure they will change their minds and be back here for support later on. :)
I will always be , ANTI-Mirena too, trying to get the word out there.
I hope you start to feel better very soon,Take care Annette.

FDA slaps down drug companies for unfounded claims

Drug companies slapped by FDA

The FDA slapped the hands of some drug companies who just couldn't help themselves by claiming their drugs could do things that had not be proven, from unproven weight loss to better looks. The best one, as highlighted in the article, was Bayer which claimed women were "looking and feeling great" when they took its contraceptive Mirena. The FDA, not amused by the claims, told Bayer:

FDA is not aware of any evidence suggesting that women who are using Mirena for birth control look great or feel great. Patients using Mirena may experience various side effects, such as irregular bleeding, ovarian cysts, back pain, weight increase, breast pain/tenderness, and acne, in addition to the side effects indicated above.... If you do, in fact, have data to support these claims, you should submit them to FDA for review.

Keep up the vigilance, FDA.

I am 29 and had the Mirena put in 6 weeks after having baby #2. I thought it was a great idea and my OB said "NO SIDE EFFECTS". I have been bleeding heavily since it was inserted, cramps, sharp pains in my uterus area, bloating and headaches at night. I don't know if this is their form of birth control, but if your bleeding everyday you can't have sex! I run 3 miles five times a week and was losing weight steadily, until I had the Mirena put in. I watch what I eat obsessively and I am gaining weight! I am emotional all the time and find myself losing my patience with my kids and my husband all the time. I am getting it taken out today! I'll update how it went and the side effects going away. I would rather deal with another pregnancy than go through this. Follow your gut feelings - the Mirena won't work for everyone and obviously there are quite a few of us!

http://www.themummychronicles.com/2009/10/im-losing-my-hair-is-my-mirena-to-blame.html

I'm Losing My Hair. Is My Mirena to Blame?
It's typical to lose your hair after you have a baby. It happened with TD and then again with The Comedian. It's also typical to see your doctor for birth control options post-baby if you are not willing to get knocked up again.

When I encountered the Mirena IUD it seemed like the perfect option. One quick doctor visit and I was good to go for the next five years. If I wanted more kids in that time I could have it removed. I read all the brochures, did some research and talked to friends who had used Mirena as well. It was my golden ticket to no thought birth control. Yippie Skippy!

That was until I started losing my hair. I didn't pay much attention to all the hair collecting in my brush, shower, comb and sink. At first. I did notice that I was cleaning them all out quicker than before. My hamster on a wheel brain pushed it aside. There were stubby pieces of hair that stuck out and refused to be tamed too. I didn't know it was from re-growth (a good sign) because I had lost that whole section of hair. Maybe it was from coloring my hair myself? More recently I thought-maybe it was from the grilling accident of 2009 ? When I went to my hair stylist this past week she seemed concerned.

"Is everything OK?" She asked as she combed out my just washed hair. I nodded yes. "Are you sure? Are you feeling OK? Stressed? Not sleeping?" She probed. I looked at her in the mirror and paused. "I am tired. The kids haven't been sleeping well. I would like more work too... Why?" I asked. "Because you are losing a lot of hair. The baby is almost a year. You should not be losing this much hair. I don't want to freak you out but when I was coloring it there were whole sections that are gone. It's so thin. These spiky pieces..." She went on and on. She told me about women with thyroid problems and my heart raced.

WHAT THE HELL?! I'm going bald?

I began to think about all the hair I had seen floating around my bathroom the last few weeks. I talked to my mother who said, "I didn't say anything but at lunch today I could see through your hair."

Heart seizes. Again. WTF?!

So I googled. 'Hair loss and women.' 'Thyroid symptoms'. 'Thyroid problems in women'. I don't have any symptoms except hair loss. I'm one of the healthiest people I know.

Then I had a thought. What if it's my IUD? My body has never agreed with any birth control/hormone option I have gone with and the Mirena is a low-dose hormone IUD versus the no hormone, copper Paraguard IUD. I googled 'Mirena and hair loss'.

Ding! Ding! Ding!

The search was scary, sad, heart-wrenching and my gut instinct went wild. I wanted to claw at my abdomen and get the thing out of me stat. The idea that I now have to search for another form of birth control pisses me off. I'm so sick of dealing with this issue. It's been almost fifteen years of this and no option has ever been a good one for me. I just want it gone. I want my hair back (six months post-removal is the typical time frame for regrowth) and I want Mirena to come clean. I never read about hair loss in my research and brochures. My doctor didn't discuss this as one of the side effects. I'm angry, sad and feeling futile.

This topic of birth control seems to always bring this about in me. Anyone else out there feel this way? Anyone?

Let me tell you after trying the pill after my first child, I switched after my second child to the copper iud, which was painful for me the first couple of months but after I was used to it; My periods were regular, some cramping now and then. Finally after 5 years I had it removed. I gave birth to my last child and the doctor said the only option for iud was the mirena, I expressed my concerns about hearing bad things about it but he said it is the same as the iud. So I went for it. After having it inserted I went to the doctor for the last check up 2 weeks after insertion, the doctor checked my mirena and he was surprised. He ordered an XRAY right away to find out if the mirena was still in place. I went for the x-ray, they told me I had nothing inside. So I was like GREAT IT FELL OUT. This is what the dr said as well. It must have spilled out. I was a little concerned as i never remember anything coming out, but with the pain I had those first 2 weeks I was glad it was gone. Then I went to a different place, to get birth control.....back to the pill. I tried that for 2 months and i was getting tingling in my legs arms hands, feet and face, so they adv to stay off the pill for a month and we would try something different they gave me condoms and "films". So I told my husband and he said that was fine, he was like we will have one last child. (since they don't have to carry them *wink wink *) Believe me we tried "like rabbits" for those 2 years and I would just get more depressed each month as I took pregnancy test after test. I seriously had thought that maybe they did a tubal litigation and I did not know anything about it. I mean as far as i have tried I have always been able to get pregnant, I as so depressed this was back in fall 2006. After the baby i had lost 20 pounds I had put on. Now we are in fall 2008 since then I have gained more weight and am at the heaviest i have ever (NEVER) been 265lbs . For those of you who know how m

I have had the mirena in for four years now, I have had bad headaches sore neck and shoulders, and gum problems. I keep getting ulcers in my mouth and about two years ago as I kept going back to the dentist every two months I had root canal on the tooth. The next time it flarred up I returned to the dentist and told me that the problem was not from the tooth and sent me to the doctor for anitbiotics, which helpped for about a week and then it returns. I am also suffering night sweats and an intolerence to any heat and a rash has now developed on my neck. Plus I am ALWAYS tired. Blood tests done last week, nothing shows up - all healthy. No weight gain though. Do you think it is the Mirena?
  • Gina Jan 29, 2013 @ 12:54 am
I've had Mirena for about 2 months and right away I was sooo tired and it was soo painful to get in I almost wanted to cry! I have had the copper IUD in before and had no problems only bad cramping. With Mirena I always have bleeding and I'm very short tempered and I am still always tired even if I get a full 8-10 hours. I have also noticed some hair loss and no sex drive! I feel lazy and run down and no desire to do anything! I googled symptoms right away and I have even gave it another month but I am going to have it removed right away! I am not going to live like this, It's just good knowing that I am not the only one. ALso the doctor recomended the Mirena and never told me about any symptoms. So pretty much like what everyone else is saying! Hopefully when It's out I will go back to my old self again!

I had the Mirena inserted over 2yrs ago. The first 3 months were HELL as I had sharp piercing pains in my pelvic area every time I took a step. I was losing my hair and I was having severe body sweats that I could not control. My Dr said to wait the side effects will go away. Sure enough they did. After about a yr I started spotting once a day for 7 days every 3 wks, then the spotting got heavier, I was getting a period 3 times in 5 wks my hair was falling out again. My Dr said that my ovaries were healthier now then what they ever were. My body found away to work around the mirena and produce to much hormones thats why I was getting my period again and losing my hair so he put me on Depo Luperin needle to put me into menopause. Well I finally had the mirena removed 5 days ago. I feel lighter but am getting cramps and slight bleeding from the urethra and the uterus. Hoping this stops soon!
  • Kirsteen Nov 27, 2012 @ 7:48 pm
Reading through all the side effects I have most of the bad ones but had put a lot of it down to stress. Should have known better than to mess around with my hormones after a nasty experience with PND a few years back. I also have (and had prior to the Mirena being inserted) a fibroid on my left ovary and I have since read that you shouldn't have it inserted if you have a history of derpression or also if you have a fibroid or fibroids on your ovaries. After I have it removed on Monday I think I will be looking for a new doctor :(

  • jbeisner Nov 20, 2012 @ 10:00 am
This is exactly my symptoms, and I've had mine in for 2 weeks. I'm concerned since you have had yours in for 5 months now, and still feeling the same! Another symptom is that I've feeling very weak. This is all just so new to me, and I hate to keep going to the doctor since it's so expensive :(
  • Heidi Oct 19, 2012 @ 6:49 am
I have had my Mirena for almost a month, first week was ok, but had cramping, now I bleed daily, I'm exhausted, dizzy, headache,,, racing heart,,,, and my hair is lifeless and falling out. I have zero interest in sex and cry at the drop of a hat. My doctor says he has inserted hundreds of these and only had one person ask to have it removed. Oh, and the other side effect, went to a party, had the normal amount of alcohol I normally would and passed out cold... at the table! Nobody could wake me up! What's with that??
  • Helen Oct 18, 2012 @ 6:45 pm
Hi, I am 47 and had the Mirena put in place after a D&C and was told that it would fix my heavy long periods.
That was almost 4 weeks ago and having it out at the 6 week check, already the side-effects (yes, I did read the nice shiny info booklet, raved to my friends about the wonder of no periods) which unlike me I did not do any actual research, if I had done I would have never had it put in!
I put on 2 kilos in 2 weeks (gym 5 days a week, constant weight for the past year of being a gym member) fuzzy head (like being slightly hungover constantly) trouble focusing (great when you are studying!) Heavy bledding for 21 days (no Doctor, it is not spoting, it is gushing!) Pain in my side (oh yes more money spent as I have to have an ultrasound next week!) The unbearable bloating (recently had a tummy tuck so nothing to bloat!) and thats what I have noticed! What else is going on that the eye does not see??? All this after less than four weeks!!
I have a friend who is on her second iud with not a problem, and I have just discovered another study friend who has had it for 18 months and has all sorts of problems and has been told they will settle!!
Not willing to see if it works out and have already told the gyno it is coming out.
So that is my story and hoping that it all goes back to normal after removal, roll on the paws!!!

I've had Mirena for 4 years now(Sep 2004), and i am considering getting it out immediately. After reading all these symptoms others have had, i am starting to realize most are similar to what I've gone through the past 4 yrs. I read the side effects sheet before getting it inserted, but it didnt state or mention any of the symptoms i've gone through. that I've noticed my sex drive has gone down significantly the past years & im always tired, i thought because of having two kids and working, but im only 25! i also had an incident where i was suffering from extreme headaches in 2010 and was put in the hospital for 5 days! to this day i still headaches but never as bad as that time period Reading that others have had that same symptom worries me. I haven't had one menstrual period since getting it, and woman are stating they got it out and have not been able to conceive, my obgyn told me after getting it taken out at 5 yrs i will be extremely fertile so i will have no problems conceiving, But this site has opened my eyes to the true possible side effects =(
  • dindy_marshall Nov 14, 2012 @ 11:59 pm
Im thinking the same thing! Ive had mine in for four years and have had a variety of health issues not even thinking it could be my iud.
  • Kelly H. Oct 15, 2012 @ 3:48 pm
Hi, at the age of 29, I have had the IUD for 5 years when I decided to go in November 2011 and have that one taken out and have a new one inserted. Not even two months later, I was diagnosed with stage 4 Breast Cancer. As soon as my results came in, my Dr. Refused to let me leave that office without immediately removing my IUD. I strongly believe that this may have been the cause of my Breast Cancer. Be careful ladies....
  • Abbie Oct 08, 2012 @ 9:34 pm
My planned parenthood pushed this IUD so much that it seemed like every other birth control option was not as good as this. I had mine in for a year and a half. After the first year I started to get headaches every day, my hair was very thin, I was really depressed and I felt like I was loosing my mind. I finally got it taken out and the symptoms stated to go away. Then I got pregnant and was told it was a molar pregnancy. We have had problems trying to get pregnant with no luck so far. I wish something could be done to warn other people about how awful this IUD is.

I don't know if my symptoms are caused by MIrena, but reading these posts makes me think maybe I'm not crazy after all. Since getting the MIrena after the birth of my third child a year ago, I have been unable to lose the rest of the weight from childbirth (despite working out religiously 4-5 times a week and writing down everything I eat). I began to have HORRIBLE headaches, which I am being treated for now, but are persistant. They are daily. I have had no sex drive, depression to the point of being suicidal, and have become very angry. I am always tired and have to drink energy drinks to get through the day. I've experienced bloating, stomach "fluttering" and chest pains and palpitations. Only recently did I have that "A-HA" moment where I realized it could be this thing. I am seriously considering getting it removed to see if these symptoms inprove.

Mooncup NEVER Buy Tampons Again

Save dollars

Mooncup a Great way to save money,Dont ever buy Tampons or Pads again,
easy to use save BIG Dollars..
http://www.mooncup.co.uk/wc.php?u=1841
The Mooncup is a reusable menstrual cup around two inches long and made from soft silicone rubber. It is worn internally like a tampon but collects menstrual fluid rather than absorbing. Unlike tampons the Mooncup is not a disposable product, so you only need to buy one.

The Mooncup will hold 30ml of fluid, which is roughly one third of the average total produced each period. A light seal is formed with your vaginal walls allowing your menstrual fluid to pass into the Mooncup without leakage or odour. You will probably find that you need to empty your Mooncup less frequently than you currently replace towels or tampons.
Why is it better?

The Mooncup menstrual cup contains no bleaches, deodorisers or absorbency gels. It does not interfere with your healthy vaginal environment, nor has it been associated with toxic shock syndrome.
The smooth surface of the Mooncup allows the mucus membranes of your vaginal wall to continue their essential cleansing and protective functions. The Mooncup does not absorb your body's natural defence mechanisms and will not deposit fibres in your vaginal wall.
The Mooncup will not cause irritation and is suitable for women with sensitive skin, thrush, eczema or allergy.
For your safety the Mooncup is made from a special medical grade non-allergic silicone. Silicone is derived from silica which is one of the most abundant minerals on earth. The Mooncup is manufactured in the UK.
The Mooncup can be cleaned in the same way as baby equipment: with sterilising fluid, or by boiling for five minutes in an open pan of water.
Unlike pads and tampons the Mooncup menstrual cup is reusable, eliminating the need to carry bulky spares. With proper care your Mooncup will last for several years.
Imagine the towels and tampons that you will be disposing of in landfill sites during those years!

Mirena

Report my side effects to the MHRA in UK every country has a medical governing body who you can report adverse events to - Yellow cards - They need to register and keep track of reports & they need follow them up with the manufacturers! I've reported mine on www.mhra.gov.uk I received an email 2 days later with a reference # and further contact details. I urge you to report it directly!!

www.mhra.gov.uk

I called MIRENA the DEVIL inside of me. I experienced the most horrible side effects while on MIRENA, from RASHES, MIGRANES, MOOD SWINGS, BRUISES, ANXIETY to WEIGHT GAIN. I gained 20 lbs. in ONE year!!! I finally took it off 6 wks. ago. I lost all the weight I gained and have returned to my own self. I urge women ...

I have it almost 3 months and next week have appointment to take it out my life stinks this pain in my lower back stabbin pain left side then they send to a specialist because they coulndt find the iud mirena and it was up side down I feel like I hate everyone I just notice a hair on my chin I want this hell of iud OUT !!!!

I had the awful little demon cast out today! LOL Got sick of the weight gain, and not being able to lose it, feeling like a knife was stabbing me in the left side of my uterus when I tried to do my "wifely duties" or exercise, severe depression, panic attacks, anxiety to the point where I attempted suicide, nausea, etc. It worked well for what it was meant for, mainly because I've become so fat, my husband won't touch me! I liked not having a period, but really, I can deal with that once a month, over everything else I've had to put up with for 6 1/2 years! And yes, it does work beyond the suggested 5 years! (unfortunately) The string was missing, so it had to be "fished" out! I didn't cry or holler, but inside I was screaming, it hurt SO BAD!! Feels like my suspicions were confirmed, that it had lodged in the left side of my uterus, cause that was the side that always hurt, but that side was AGONIZING when he pulled it out! I'm so DONE with hormonal bc methods.

Hi everyone :) I had mirena inserted 5 months ago and have had nothing but problems... Recently I have had shooting pain in my side, 2 UTI's, pressure in my abdomen that is constant and pain in my right lower back that hurts to touch... Heading to the ER as soon as my daughter wakes up since I just can't take it anymore!

It's only been a month but I can't take this anymore...
I've had the Mirena IUD for a month now. I've bled every day since it was placed. It was a pretty horrible experience having it placed so I expected to bleed for a bit...but for a month? The nurse told me to expect to have "irregular bleeding" for 3-12 months!! A few days ago I started have different pains. Not the cramps that I've had for the last month. And I'm so very bloated. I look pregnant! Prior to having the Mirena I'd lost almost 30 lbs so my clothes have been WAY too big. Just 3 days ago I had my pants on & was joking with my hubby cuz they will just fall down if I'm not careful. Now SAME PANTS and super tight. I called the nurse again today to tell her about it...she said it must be something else and not the Mirena. WTF?!? I'm in lots of pain, constant headaches, hot flashes, body aches, always tired etc. Sound familiar?? Finally I got the nurse to make me an appt for tomorrow. My doc is out of town so hopefully this new doc will just remove it for me. If not I have an appt with my doc on 11/2 and I'm gonna ask her to remove it then. I had it placed to help with my heavy periods because she convinced me it was a better option than the NovaSure procedure. I'm thinking that I just want a hysterectomy. She said my uterine biopsy came back positive for hyperplasia, so hopefully she won't fight me on the hysterectomy. I'm just SOO done and so tired of all this. Thanks for listening to me vent!

My symptoms: Dizzy spells, lightheadedness, hair falling out & growing in fuzzy (looks singed), weight gain, insomnia, sweating more than usual, thirsty, headaches, eye pain (feels like they are strained from overuse), acne, heart palpitations, loss of breath while running (I'm a long distance runner...) All started after had Mirena in for 16 months

I have had Mirena for almost 2 years now, I have one child who is 2, had been experiencing a lot of problems and wanted to have another child so I went for a routine removal. During this, they couldn't find the strings, so I then went for an ultrasound which turned out to be very painful, they couldn't find it in my uterus, My doctor assured me that it probably fell out without my knowing it but wanted an X-Ray to confirm. The xray showed that the Mirena had gone completely through my uterus and now I have to have a somewhat exploratory surgery to have it removed, with a possibility of losing one of my fallopian tubes. I am devastated that I have to go through all of this. The risk is supposedly 1 in 1000, but when it is you it is not worth it, find some other form of birth control.

I've had Mirena for 2 1/2 years following the birth of my daughter...and it's been the worst 2 1/2 years of my life. I've been depressed, fatigued, severe migraines, I've gained 20 lbs., my sex drive is non-existent. I have the worst cramps ever, as if I'm in labor. I can't sleep, but I'm always tired. My mood swings are unbearable! I cry over everything. I used to be a happy energetic person and now I can hardly get out of bed. I wish I had known about these side effects before I had gotten in placed! My doctor doesn't believe that Mirena can be causing all of my problems becuase his other patients "LOVE" it. I've had every blood test imaginable and they've all been normal. I know all of my problems have to be due to Mirena.

These are just SOME of the stories from my Facebook Group, there are thousands more, just google Mirena Side Effects........

IUD contraceptives are Toxic Pesticides

IUD contraceptives are Toxic Pesticides! *Levonorgestrel in IUD is Toxic Pesticide!

is Toxic Pesticide!

The intrauterine system (IUS) is a long acting reversible hormonal contraceptive device that is placed in the uterus. An IUS has a hormone cylinder that releases a progestin (progestogen) called levonorgestrel. The only brand currently available is the T-frame LNG-20 IUS, marketed as Mirena Coil by * Schering Health and * Berlex Laboratories (*Bayer).

The term IUS is used in the United Kingdom to distinguish the hormonal intrauterine contraceptive from copper-based intrauterine devices (IUDs). In the United States, all intrauterine contraceptives are referred to with the term IUD.

Progestasert was the first hormonal uterine device, developed in 1976 and manufactured until 2001. It released progesterone, was replaced annually, and had a failure rate of 2% per year.

As of 2007, the LNG-20 IUS - marketed as Mirena by Bayer - is the only IntraUterine System available. First introduced in 1990, it releases levonorgestrel (a progestogen) and may be used for five years

Norgestrel

Norgestrel is a progestin used in hormonal contraceptives. Norgestrel is a mixture of two stereoisomers, dextro-norgestrel (CAS# 797-64- and levo-norgestrel (CAS# 797-63-7). Only levonorgestrel is biologically active. Therefore, while some medications may contain dextronorgestrel, they are often labeled in terms of their levonorgestrel content only, ignoring the inert isomer.

Mechanisms of contraception
The Mirena (*IUD) is intended to initially release a daily dose of 20 micrograms levonorgestrel (a progestin).

Reproductive and developmental toxicity

Some pesticides are known to cause birth defects or interfere with normal development. Weight-of-the-evidence evaluations of this type of toxicity have been conducted by the State of California and by the U.S. EPA under its Toxics Release Inventory program.

Many pesticides that disrupt endocrine functions also cause reproductive and developmental harm, as well as other adverse effects.

I do understand everyone is different but my experience n my sister are not good..guess unlucky and it does not agree with our bodies..

J. Taylor says:

sorry on mobile n not fitin.. .she went to doctor this week as she had bad pains not as bad as when she had in..the doc did tests n has PID.She has to have antibiotics and if doesn't work n has scarred internally she can't have kids.she has 2already but past month she n her partner were thinking of one more child.I feel bad as I recommended her this when I first got done..I definitely want this iud out after hearing what she going through.she said she also felt constantly bloated to n it could be I have cyst or infection which goes unnoticed if no pain.. if I had known this is what the mirena did mentally n physically I would never had gotten it in.I thought its too good to be true..no side affects no periods no babies etc..well I've constantly had the side affects irregular periods depressed lack of energy always feeling tired..n past couple weeks achey joints have come back. so a trip to the docs to get removed as not a happy customer.id prefer pill n take the risk of getting pregnant..than to have damage to my uterus..yeah I read iud can perforate uterus severely and that's when it flips or moves out of place..
doctors don't prewarn of these things.. wish we could sue haha.

J. Taylor says:

I got inserted as didn't want to fall pregnant as my son was 6months old n had 3other.
I've had in for 1yr n half.Bled for a month heavily. Startedhaving regular periods back lasted usual 7days. After 3months noticed I was so emotional sensitive n moody. Also feeling low about my weight. as felt always bloated.I was a size 10 goal was to get back into my 8s .instead I went up a size 12.
I was freaking. out of as i was exhausted n had achey sore joints but went away after I went to emergency hospital on a easter weekend..I was in excruciating pain it hurt and burning urine.I couldn't walk or sit upright had sore abdominal pains as if my eggs were gonna burst.
the doctors say it was some infection. the pain just from inflammation from infection from the Iud which causing pressure making it very uncomfortable.they gave me antibiotics.I was better afterwards.this happened 6-7months after insertion :(. After that I thought things get better..
weight gain was uncontrollable I'm now 14-16. :( exercised did zumba ate healthy did dieting pills..nothing working.
also noticed 2months after had infection my periods no longer came monthly for 7days..more like every 2weeks sometimes monthly.I've lost track as irregular.. I only need medium tampon for morning 1st day n when take out its not full..2nd day spotting lightly..that's it..but occasionally I spot after intercourse n try to avoid intercourse to avoid spotting.
I'm indecisive to keep iud in or out as don't want to fall pregnant but then I want out as I don't feel like myself since having inserted.I'm gaining so much weight.this is the fattest I've ever gotten besides pregnancy..its depressing I hate
socialising n going out as I'm ashamed to see mates I'm fat my self esteem is low. this bloatedness is main concern..
then recently I got a call from my sis in hysterics ( whom id.recommended iud to) she had few months ago (same pains as I) she was told she had infection n a cyst on ovary n was given antibiotics.she

Lisa says:

I had my iud inserted almost 2 months ago now. I was having extremely heavy periods and I have endometriosis so the obgyn suggested this as another option because she felt at almost 41 yrs of age I was too young for a hysterecomy.
The insertion itself was extremely painful and I have a high pain tolerance (even the Dr stated that when she was having difficulty inserting) , although I have 2 children both children were delivered c-section.
I have gone about 3 days were there has not been any sort of bleeding and it's been heavy on and off.
I now get pains in the lower left side of my abdomin and find I get these pains after orgasim as well.
Sex is not painful when I do have it. I just don't feel like having it and that's not normal for me.
Prior to going on mirena, I had huge hormonal swings...angry, aggitated but now I just feel blah - not happy, not sad just walking and carrying on with life in a daze - don't care about anything and if I didn't have to talk to anyone...I won't which is also very unlike me.
I have not noticed any unusual hair loss nor have a noticed a smelly discharge but then it's difficult to tell since I really haven't stopped bleeding.
I have no energy, no real thought process. I feel like I'm forgetting things and constantly trying to chase the thought of what I've forgotten.
To add to it, my face has become "patchy" with dry spots where skin is flaking and acne in other spots.
I also have fibro-cystic breasts (with 2 benign tumours removed over 20 yrs ago), the pain around the base of my breats is so bad that it hurts to remove my bra and touch/lay on them.
I had no idea mirena was causing so many symptoms in others....I'm glad that people have posted their stories....I am not losing my mind!

kate says:

is it normal to pee like every half hr... i feel like im preg ever since i had this put in....tell me this why would a dr suggest this if they kno all the stuff that went wrng with ppl wen they had it in... do they not read up on stuff or they just dumb

AnniHouston says:

I am 30 years old and have a Mirena in for 11 months now. I've had extreme PMS (pass my shotgun as it is known at work) and pain that kept me from work for at least 1 day a month. Heavy bleeding for 7 days and such bad cramping that I couldn't move without crying. Painmeds I used were about 4 Voltarin every 24 hours.

The doctor thought I had endio and decided to do a laparoscopy and to insert the Mirena at the same time. I don't have children but he said it would help with the worst of my problems so I went with his recommendation.

Worst decision of my life. I now have at least 4 migraines a week instead of 3 a month. Bleeding is 14 days a month but less a day. Cramping is such that I can move so I can go to work. Almost permanent nausea. Picked up about 10kg. I actually look about 4 months pregnant and visit the toilet about twice an hour. I went from pass my shotgun to just ripping peoples throats out without bothering with a shotgun... and I drink Voltarin or Mybulin every single day at least once due to cramping. Depression and insomnia is worse than ever. I have a busy job. We barely have time to eat lunch but I only sleep about 3 nights a week. It is a vicious cycle that won't be broken until I lose the Mirena.

Never do this to yourself. I cannot see any actual benefits. I only exchanged one set of problems for another. The biggest problem I have isn't influenced by this. The extreme cramping I have is getting worse again and it isn't due to anything actually being wrong. My uterus just spasms too much and that now happens every single day.

Ladies, don't listen to a doctor. Don't do this to yourself. My doctor also told me that there is almost no side-effects because the Mirena is contained in your uterus. Makes me wonder how he thinks a body works after reading about it a bit

Alicia T says:

i had the mirena placed right after my son was born ive had it in about 9 months now and it has done nothing but cause me problems i keep a constant pain on my lower right side everytime i go to the restroom i bleed im irritable tired all the time back pain all the time sex is not an option because my sex drive is gone i have to wear pads everyday due to excesive discharge and im constantly gettin bacterial infections and now ready everyone elses posts ive realised i am not the only one im going to my dr tomorrow im hoping they will take the mirena out i would not recomend it to anyone im so tired of the agonizing pain everyday and feeling depressed because my husband wants to be creative in bed and i just cant do it due to pain i wonder if depression can be a side effect

crystal says:

I had the mirena reomved on April 6, 2012 and bled 2 days after for 3 days . After that i haven't had a period or any type of bleeding, and i'm scared ! I'm 21 right now i have no type of insurance to go see a doctor .. i just want to know if anyone has gone through this . It's been 6 month with no period took 5 home pregnancy test and nothing . please can someone help me with what is going on Thank you !!

Lindy says:

I had a mirena fitted 4 months ago to deal with heavy periods. I was warned of the potential side effects by my doctor and the worst one I've had is daily bleeding. But it is very light and I am now in my 24th consecutive day of bleeding. Yes it's a pain but preferable to my heavy periods. It doesn't stop me having sex and neither would a heavier bleed. Woman bleed, it's a fact and any loving man will accept that and if he can't stand a bit of blood, it's a poor do. PMS is probably a bit worse and lasts longer and more random because I'm not having a regular monthly cycle. Some people on this site (I believe) are blaming the Mirena for all and every health problem they have, noticeably thyroid problems and symptoms that are consistent with thyroid problems and it is the thyroid that is causing the problem, not the Merina. A few of my friends have a Merina fitted, with varying side effects, all of which have been warned about but we all agree, lighter, although prolonged bleeding and not having to take pills and mess about with gadgets are worth it. I think there is a lot of hysterical scaremongering going on here that could put women off using the Merina for no good reason.

B says:

I have had my Mirena for almost a year. It will be a year next month. It was inserted six weeks after I had my baby. When I first got it, i bled for a couple of a days and a few minor cramps, but nothing to complain about. I still get a period every month and they are usually light, but the last between 7 and 8 days. I also get a ton of symptoms, including headaches, body aches in legs, sharp pains in my back, dizziness, numbness quickly in my fingers and feet if I lay a certain way, fatigue, cramps, and bloating. I am contemplating hard if I should have it removed and go back on the pill. This month my period came on heavy. I am confused. I am hoping that I can deal with all of this until another year. Do you all think it should be removed? I haven't spoke with my doctor yet. My yearly checkup is in September, so maybe I can hold out until then. I do agree that it may not be good for everyone, so I may be in that group -B

One womens story from ban mirena facebook page.

Tammrah TheTammarazzi
I haven't written out all my symptoms or my story on here yet. Its painful to remember and i try not to think about it until one of my old symptoms Rears its ugly head. It's been a long time since I've had the Mirena removed. Approx a year and a half. I...too, only had it in for 3 months. And it was 3 months of agony.
I agree with what Robin is saying about the Mirena not being the direct cause of the symptoms because when someone finally did listen to me they said my body was having an auto-immune response. It was so severe that I couldn't walk for over 2 weeks. That same doctor who finally agreed to do an emergency removal for me said this. She said she couldn't prove the Mirena caused all the symptoms but my body was definitely going through an auto-immune response (attacking itself).
Immediately after she took it out I felt better. Then 2 weeks later things started to go in a better direction. Now a year and a half later I still can get some symptoms without warning.
That same doctor also told me that the hormones from it were stored in the body's fat cells. I had gained over 20 lbs in three months because of the evil thing. So when it was finally removed and the weight started coming off...the symptoms started dissipating. So she may have been correct. I feel for all you women out there who are only going through this now. I'm so glad my ride through hell is over. I'm praying that there isn't going to be any longterm, permanent damage but who knows. My advice to you...don't get the evil thing in the first place. And if you have it already GET IT REMOVED IMMEDIATELY! you are not going crazy! The Mirena is evil and no matter how many times they try to convince you that the Mirena isn't at fault for your symptoms...it really is! GET RID OF IT! the sooner you do, the sooner you can start to get back to being yourself.
Someday I'll be able to write out my story here. But right now it's still too painful and I am not willing to re-live my experience. Reading all of your stories is painful enough.
Having gone through this has changed my view and faith in doctors and the health care system. I will never again put my trust in another person just because they have a PHD attached to their name. My doctor was a woman and she should be ashamed of herself! I have never gone back to her. I have so much anger towards her still that I find it impossible to even tell her how wrong she is. I know I am NOT the only patient she had coming back to her and begging for help because of the agony the Mirena causes. And yet she's still there pushing this horrible device on more and more women everyday. It makes me sick to think of how many she's convinced, like she did me, to fork out $600 to have evil inserted. I swear she's getting a payout from pharma on how many she can sell. As far as I'm concerned shes no better than a drug pusher with a fancy title. They should all go to jail for this. They should all be paying for the hell and destruction they've caused. But this is the real world. And nobody ever seems to have to be accountable for anything. Big pharma and oil & gas rule the world. If we think we have a say in anything, we're only fooling ourselves. I can guarantee that my female ex-doctor did not write any of my experiences in my file. Covering her own ass of course. Every time i came to see her begging for help she would tell me its all in my head and i needed psychological help or anti-anxiety drugs. She refused to send me for testing. And she absolutely REFUSED TO REMOVE IT!!!! Which is unfreakingreal if you ask me! I even tried to remove it myself after that because I was so desperate! And I know my own body. And after I lost the use of one of my legs, my boyfriend at the time, (that 5 year relationship was also destroyed by this evil thing) wheeled me to a women's health clinic downtown. That female doctor DID do testing and said its definitely NOT in my head and I was having a severe auto-immune response to something. She could not prove it was the Mirena. She DID however agree to an emergency removal! She didnt deny the Mirena caused the auto-immune responses, just said there was no way to prove it! Funny how the symptoms went away after removal. So how does one go about making them pay? It's not possible. They make sure of that. Pass on your knowledge of this evil thing to everyone you know. That is the only way to beat them and the only way to make them pay. If everyone stops using and starts refusing this product, then it won't be financially viable for big pharma to keep it on the market. The only way to make them pay is for all of us to make a big enough noise so everyone hears and stops buying. There is no other way. The doctors are bought slaves who will forever back the hand that feeds them. Good luck to all of you. And please...believe in yourself and your own body. You're not going crazy and it's not all in your head!

Hi everyone!! Brutal how a device can ruin your life! I have had my mirena for just over 2 years! I was a healthy 33 year old woman with 4 kids and a husband who wasnt eligible for a vasectomy. I had just started for a year (without 1 day off) a career as a transit operator! My life was on a good path! After the insertion of this device I was off for 3 weeks due to excruciating pain! I went back to a job that I loved and was damn good at! Well things started to change... I started to hate my job and slowly fell more depressed and withdrawn as the days passed. I became moody, temperamental, and overwhelmed by any single thing that was off! Before I had a insatiable sex drive and now I have none! My once beautiful, long hair is lifeless and thinned out! This past oct, I was diagnosed with shingles, and then went on to develop severe nerve damage. I am on many different high dosage of meds, including some for major depression! I have researched and researched why this could have happened to me, due to my not fitting the criteria of shingles being so young and not healing well!! Nothing seemed to make sense! Even every dr, pharmacist, neurologist, say that i am a very rare case and they have never seen this at my age. Well now finally it seems to make sense! I am horrified yet grateful to read all these stories, and there r sooooo many more blogs with woman from every race, age, color and country!! I have made an appointment to have mine removed in 2 days! My dr has no choice but to remove this from my body! My family and I have had 2 years of hell and this matter NEEDS to be acknowledged! There r wayyy too many woman with the same issues for this to go on without recognition!!! Please include me in any fight to have this device banned! I will keep u updated on how the removal goes!! I am soo excited to have my life back!!

A Case Report.

Abdominal X-Ray with the Mirena IUS (arrowed).Case report

A 33-year-old woman, para 2, with a long standing history of menorrhagia, dysmenorrhoea and tiredness was referred by her GP to the hospital (2002). At the time she was treated for anaemia and felt tiredness. Also she was suffering from dysmenorrhoea; her periods had been regular although in the previous few months she was bleeding PV continuously. Her periods had become heavy after sterilisation (1996). She was anaemic. Cervical cytology had always been normal. In the past she had undergone a laparoscopy for pelvic pain for suspected endometriosis (1997), an appendicectomy (1997) and she was diagnosed with duodenal ulcer (1996). For management of her menorrhagia, she opted for Microwave Endometrial Ablation which was done in August 2002. After that she had an ultrasound scan for erratic bleeding which showed irregular endometrium. The patient was booked for hysteroscopy under general anaesthesia. The procedure was attempted in September 2003 and was abandoned due to difficulties passing the hysteroscope through the endocervical canal. The hysteroscopy was repeated in January 2004 and few intrauterine adhesions were reported. A Mirena IUS was inserted under the same general anaesthetic.

A month later she was admitted to the hospital with right upper quadrant pain and a problematic bleeding pattern. Ultrasound at this stage showed a normal size uterus but the Mirena IUS was not obviously in situ. It was assumed the Mirena IUS had fallen out and the patient was booked for vaginal hysterectomy, which was performed in September 2005.

In January 2007 was admitted to the hospital with right upper quadrant pain again and all investigations including chest X-ray, abdominal ultrasound scan and blood tests were normal. She had an upper GI endoscopy which showed a gastric ulcer (Cardia).
Fig.1 Abdominal X-Ray with the Mirena IUS (arrowed).

She was admitted again 1 year later with pelvic pain. An abdominal X-ray showed the lost IUS (fig. 1) and the CT scan showed the IUS to lie anteriorly under the rectus muscles and adjacent to the dome of the bladder. In April 2008 the IUS was retrieved laparoscopically. The omentum was adherent to anterior abdominal wall and the Mirena IUS was found in the omentum, (Fig.2). This was felt to be unlikely to be the cause of the pain. The IUS was removed easily from the abdominal cavity laparoscopically. The right tube and ovary were adherent to right pelvic side and they were freed up. The procedure was uneventful and the patient was discharged the same day and symptom free since.

What a JOKE !!!!! Mirena IUD: beyond Tupperware!

Bayer Pharmaceuticals, the maker of the Mirena IUD, has teamed up with the Mommy marketing site "Mom Central" to sponsor house parties to sell women the Mirena IUD.

According to a warning letter sent to Bayer by the FDA about the worded content of the events -

The Mirena program is a live presentation designed for a consumer audience of "busy moms." The program is presented in a consumer's home or other private setting (e.g. private restaurant party) by a representative from Mom Central (a social networking internet site) and a nurse practitioner (Ms. Barb Dehn). The Mirena program submitted to FDA also references a presentation given by a fashion stylist (Ms. Angela Hastings) that immediately follows Ms. Dehn's presentation regarding the use of Mirena. The script of Ms. Hastings' presentation regarding fashion tips was not submitted to FDA.

Another Horror Story.

This story is about how I got the Mirena IUD and ended up having it surgically removed, as it tore a hole through my uterus, entered my abdmen, leaving me unable to have any more children. If you are thinking of getting the Mirena IUD, please read this article and do your own research. Don't listen to your doctor if you think there is a problem, trust your instincts and get a second opinion.

Why I got the Mirena:

I found out while I was pregnant with my son that I had a blood clotting disorder. As a result I was warned that I should not take oral birth control. My OBGYN told me about the Mirena, a "safe" device inserted into the uterus that would prevent pregnancy for upto 5 years. It sounded like the best option for me, given that I couldn't take the pill. I read the pamphlet of information that she gave me and read through the information on the website. Everything seemed very safe and effective. Words like Uterine Perforation, Fertility Issues, Side Effects, were not listed on the website at the time, but have now been added at the top of the webpage. Not to mention the fact that my doctor was really pushing me to get it done. She recommended that I get it just 5 weeks after giving birth to my first child.

Painful:

My red flag was the extremely painful insertion. The doctor and the website said, " slight discomfort, similar to period cramps" NO WAY. When they put it in, it was so painful that I screamed and cried. The doctor gave me a pillow to cry into because I was disturbing the other patients in the office.

For weeks afterward I had stomach pain, bloating and bleeding. I went back to the doctor twice and she said it was normal.

Start of the Side Effects:

Second red flag, within a few months after it was inserted I started to notice the changes. Spotty Periods, changes in flow, pain, mood swings. I thought all this was just apart of my body getting back to normal after having a baby.

Over the next year I noticed that I never got a regular period, sometimes it was 2 weeks apart, 5 weeks, nothing for months. My sex drive was really low, sex was painful, I had a really hard time losing weight and I had massive mood swings, my husband said that it was probably stress and I disregarded it.

My Fault:

At my annual checkup I discussed my side effects with my doctor and she said it was all normal. But I didn't believe it, I just didn't feel like myself. I think I knew something wasn't wrong, but I trusted my doctor and my symptoms didn't seem to really be affecting my life, clearly the Mirena was working, as I was not pregnant. I just ignored the side effects and problems rather than getting a second opinion or pressing my doctor for more answers. I just assumed they were the after effects of having a baby.

The lost Mirena:

I have to admit that I missed my second annual exam because we were living abroad, but when I came back I went in for my 3 year check up. My OBGYN was shocked to hear that the side effects were still happening, she also couldn't find the Mirena upon examining me. So she sent me in for an Xray. The xray showed that the Mirena was no longer in my uterus but floating dangerously in my abdominal cavity. Noone could be sure how long it had been like that, but it wasn't where it was supposed to be.

The surgury:

I felt so scared when I found out what had happened and to think that now my health was in danger because of this little device. I felt betrayed by my OBGYN, that she didn't believe me, and disappointed in myself that I didn't push back to more answers.

I decided to find the best laproscopic surgeon in my area to perform the surgury as my OBGYN had only performed the surgury twice. My OBGYN was so mad that I didn't choose her to perform the surgury. I realized after that I was glad I had stuck to my instinct about finding my own doctor to perform the surgury.

I was in surgury for 2 hours, they finally found the IUD embedded in the lining of my abdomen. A dificult surgury for even the best laproscopic surgeon.

The recovery:

After 5 days I was able to move around again and was left with 3 small scars.

The worst scar of all was coming to terms with the fact that I would never be able to have more children. I regret that I didn't trust my own instincts and just lived my life ignoring what my body was trying to tell me.

Lots of women tell me that their bodies have changed so much that it's hard to know what a normal feeling and whats just changes that we come to expect with being a woman.

If you can take away anything from this, it's that you should keep asking until you get an answer that you are happy with. Do your own research don't let anyone tell you that you are overreacting or that things are normal when you think they aren't. It's your body, you know it better than anyone else.

My life has returned to normal now, I had my tubes tied to prevent any miscarriages that I was warned would happen as a result of my torn uterus. My hormones, periods and sex drive have all returned to normal. I no longer feel like something is wrong all the time. My body finally feels normal again. I feel like it is my responsbility to warn women, and although it may work for some, it may not work for all.

If you experience any side effects, seek help from your doctor and don't feel pressured to keep the device it. Just do what YOU feel is right

Please pass this story on to any women that you think should hear it. I wish someone had done that for me.

This is my actual Xray, the IUD is upside down and outside the uterus. When they finally operated it was up near my ribs stuck in the lining of my abdomen.

Function of Mirena

Function

Both IUDs cause the endometrium to release white blood cells and prostaglandins, creating a hostile environment for sperm and eggs. This makes it difficult for the sperm and egg to move through the reproductive tract and join together. They also change the cervical mucus, making it less likely that the sperm will enter the uterus. In Paraguard, the presence of copper also has a spermicidal effect. Mirena contains the hormone levonorgestrel, a common ingredient in oral contraception. Mirena may stop ovulation entirely.

It's not all about the weight either.I have been to my OB/GYN SEVERAL times with abdominal pain, constipation for a week & then diarreah for 2-3 days, ovary pain,& excruciating pain during intercourse. She keeps telling me that my abdominal pain/ovary pain is due to bowl issues.I have the pain even when i'm "cleaned" out.She diagnosed me with intersistial cystitis (IC) which is causing my intercourse pain.I am so extreamly tired all the time & very irritable.I keep feeling like I need to take deep breaths all the time too.I want this thing REMOVED NOW!!

test I had the mirena as a last ditch effort to prevent a hysterectomy with endometrial hyperplasia, and it has certainly has worked to stop the massive blood loss. The extreme back pain passed in a couple of weeks as promised, but in 5 months, I have had only a handful of days with no blood loss or discharge. The main issues I have noticed since then have been weight gain, hair loss and memory loss, but I had never connected them with the Mirena - I just blamed the ageing process and menopause as I am approaching 50. Over the last week, I have started to have serious pain from muscle spasms in my shoulders, shooting pains through my trunk muscles, and some more minor cramps in my calf muscles, which reminded me of being pregnant. It finally occurred to me that this might all be related to the Mirena. Reading this site makes me realise that I need to look into this more - a hysterectomy is sounding pretty good right now.

I have come to recognize that all my symptoms have a reason. I am gaining weight like crazy with the anxiety I have. The mood swings, (which is making my marriage fall apart), headaches, extreme bloating and gas, the spotting everyother day. The symptoms are endless. When I first had the mirena placed (October 2011) I had no idea what I was getting into. I remember the very next day, I suffered from a severe migraine that I was almost rushed to the hospital. After reading all the comments I am even more concerned as I was diagnosed with a brain anuerysm. I have three beautiful children who I would love to enjoy and them not remember me as this bitch that never cared to do anything with them. I just can not help it. I try to get motivated, but in minutes I flip out or go to bed. I do not know if Mirena affects hypertension, but as for me it is a big risk factor for anuerysm rupture. I think it is safe to assume yes as you crave junk food. I am taking it off...ASAP

Hysterectomy Vaginal

The last option for me was to have a hysterectomy and it was the BEST thing I ever done,I wish I had done this instead of listening to the Doctor and getting Mirena.if you don't plan on more children you can now get a vaginal hysterectomy, that's what I had, only in hospital 3 days,no big scar as your uterus is removed through your vagina, and a few tiny cuts from the keyhole surgery above pubic bone,I cant even see where they were anymore .I had to have my ovaries removed as well because of constant cysts.

Hysterectomy is the surgical removal of a woman's uterus. It may also involve the removal of the fallopian tubes and ovaries. Once a hysterectomy is performed, a woman can no longer have children or menstrual periods. Hysterectomy is used to treat a number of conditions, such as excessive menstrual bleeding and cancer. In Australia, around 30,000 women undergo this operation every year.

Conditions that may require hysterectomy
A hysterectomy may be performed to correct various gynaecological problems including:
Heavy, irregular or abnormal menstrual bleeding
Fibroids
Endometriosis
Uterine prolapse
Cancer of the uterus, ovary or cervix
Pelvic inflammatory disease.
Medical issues to consider
Apart from cancer, many of the gynaecological conditions assisted by hysterectomy may also be successfully treated using other methods. If, after discussion of all options with your doctor, you choose to have a hysterectomy, there are several things that your doctor should discuss with you before the operation. These include:
Your medical history (as some pre-existing conditions may influence decisions on surgery and anaesthetics).
The pros and cons of abdominal surgery versus vaginal surgery.
Your support options after surgery.
Your feelings about the surgery.
You will have a range of tests, including a complete blood count test to check for problems such as anaemia.

Operation procedure
You will have an intravenous drip inserted into a vein in your hand or arm, and will be given a general anaesthetic. The operation may be performed via a lower abdominal incision (cut) or through the vagina.

Abdominal hysterectomy
For an abdominal hysterectomy, a cut is usually made horizontally along your pubic hairline (and your pubic hair will be shaved around the incision). For most women, this results in a small scar. Some patients may need a vertical incision in the lower abdomen.

Vaginal hysterectomy
A vaginal hysterectomy is performed through an incision (cut) at the top of the vagina. This may or may not involve the use of a laparoscope. A laparoscope is a slender instrument used in 'keyhole' surgery. During a laparoscopic assisted vaginal hysterectomy, surgery is performed via three or four small incisions in the abdomen. It is completed through the vagina.

Vaginal hysterectomy is a preferred option for many women as it avoids the need for a long abdominal cut. An abdominal procedure is generally recommended when large fibroids or cancer is present.

Types of hysterectomy
There are four variations of hysterectomy, including:
Total hysterectomy - the entire uterus and cervix is removed, but the ovaries are retained.
Subtotal (partial) hysterectomy - the uterus is removed, but the cervix may be retained. While removal of the cervix is generally advised because it is a potential cancer site in the body, some women consider that it serves a purpose during penetrative sex. If the cervix is kept, regular Pap smears are necessary.
Hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oopherectomy - the uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries are removed. This operation is performed if cancer of the ovaries or the uterus has been diagnosed. It may also be performed for severe infection or endometriosis.
Radical hysterectomy - the most extensive version of the operation. It involves the removal of the uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, upper part of the vagina, and associated pelvic ligaments and lymph nodes. This may be performed if cancer of the cervix, ovaries or uterus is present.
Immediately after the operation
After the operation, you can expect:
There will be some soreness around the operation site - your doctor will prescribe pain-killing medication for you.
You may experience 'wind' pain for a few days.
Depending on the procedure and your condition, the intravenous tube in your arm will be removed sometime during the first few days.
The catheter (drainage tube) in your bladder is usually removed within 24 hours of surgery, unless the bladder was traumatised during the procedure.
As soon as possible, you will be encouraged to get out of bed and go for short walks around the ward.
Depending on the type of surgery, you can expect a hospital stay of between two and seven days.
Recovery is generally faster after vaginal surgery than abdominal surgery.
Following surgery, it is important to start pelvic floor and abdominal exercises as soon as possible. These exercises strengthen the muscles in the pelvis and help maintain normal bladder function and vaginal muscle tone. Your doctor or physiotherapist will let you know how soon you can start these particular exercises.
You don't go in to early menopause unless they remove your ovaries too.

What some women have said about Mirena

Hey there! I've done some research about early signs of pregnancy, and I've been experiencing ALL of them for the last three weeks- especially the last two. I have a copper IUD, and so have not paid attention to swollen breasts or anything like that since that's typical of PMS for me. However, I have had absolutely zero cramping...which is extremely unusual for me. Ever since I've had this IUD, and even before I had it, cramping for me starts a week before my cycle and can be incapacitating (it feels like a few knives at the same time carving up my uterus and muscles around it). I've had some pain- almost like indigestion, for maybe a minute and that's it...just a few days ago, and this morning. Today was when my cycle was supposed to begin, and I was exhausted, and I noticed some dark brown spotting. Once again, I could be one of the many paranoid, but I'm also worried that I am (or was) pregnant and the IUD may have kicked out the fertilized egg. I also wouldn't worry about the lack of cramps (there was one other month when they lasted only for 2 days instead of 6), but my hair...which is normally very spirally and curly, also lost it's curl around the same time when all of these symptoms began. That wouldn't be a big deal, except that all of my aunts lost their curly hair at their first pregnancies....I took a home test yesterday and it was negative (and still too early to take one according to my cycle chart)...yet all of the other signs point to yes. Help?

I have the same symptoms, except mine happened immediately when I got the copper IUD in. Also, I had a large fleshy tissue come out of my vagina, and discharge came afterwards. I went to the doctor, they didn't know what was wrong. I have no infections or STD's and the pain seems to be slowly going away, no one knows what is wrong but I have been told to see a OB GYN, and that the only way to be sure I'm not pregnant is an ultrasound.

Ok... I am a bit paranoid... i have a copper IUD for about a year now... every month is a different story with my period... and every month is like if i was pregnant... but for what my OB tells me it has nothing to do with my IUD. Anyhow... this month it''s kinda weird, i started having some brown discharge the same day i was supposed to get my period, which is weird for me cause I''m always late, and today i had a light bleeding, i got super happy thinking it was my period but, all night long i been checking and nothing yet.. i think the bleeding was because i lift my 6 year old (he is a big boy).... i have to meet my Doc on thursday, i haven''t mentioned anything to my Hubby, but i think i''m pregnant.... i''m getting some of the same symptoms i got with my first preg. I Love being pregnant, but i can''t have a baby right now... have anybody else experience brown discharge aft a year with the copper IUD (i know discharge is normal while on the IUD, but the BROWN one is scary)

i have had my period this month, and it was shorter than usual. i have has my copper iud for about 2 years and my periods are pretty normal except this month it was lighter and now 6 days after i have light brown spotting, i have ALOT of pregnancy symptoms... and negative tests. i know with copper iud''s you lk 0.18% chance of pregnancy, but ummmm i feel VERY pregnant and my stomach is bloated.

I had the paragard IUD for 4 years. 2 weeks ago went to ER with horrible stabbing pains in my right side. I thought is was a cyst(I only have my right ovary.) I had a period in March it was right on time but, very light, didn''t think much about it. They did a pregnancy test and Ultrasound I was 7 weeks pregnant and it was Etopic. IUD''s are usually 99.4% effictive. If you have any doubts get them checked out, I easily could have died.

I'm one week late, Negative Urine Test. I have had the Copper Iud for about a year and a half. I have always been on time and it really did not change anything for me. I don't have insurance and I already have four kids and I'm freaking out. I'm expiereincing cramps and back pain. Thinking about going to the E.R. to see if they can tell me why I have not started but afraid of the outcome and cost. Can't believe this is happening and now I'm really stressing.

My son will be one year old at the end of this month, i didnt even have the IUD for a year and wound up pregnant with it perfectly in place, wouldnt recommend it to anyone!

I have had the Copper IUD for about a year and a half now. I chose to get it after my first child because I was horrible at taking pills everyday...hence the birth of my daughter. The IUD seemed perfect. The only side affects I have ever experienced were the heavy periods for about 7 days straight and the worst cramps of my life. I never used to get cramps and my periods were normally 3-4 days long...I loved it!!! Now for about the last 3 weeks or so I have had tender breast, nausea, cramping, all the pregnancy symptoms and I'm starting to freak out because it didn't happen when I first got it. I also have cysts so that's another scare which I didn't find out I had until about a month and a half ago. My last period was abnormal from the ones I've been having. It was spotting first two days and only 3 days of bleeding...and now I just started again and its a week early. I don't whats going on. Have a doctor's appointment for blood-based pregnancy test coming up and is getting this thing REMOVED!

What did you find out? Are you pregnant because I have had about the same things going on. I have only had the Copper IUD for three months and my first period was normal, and the last period was wierd I had light bleeding for 3 days then one really heavy day of bleeding but no cramps. Now I am nauseas after everything I eat, starving all the time, cramping, and tender breast just started. It feels just like being pregnant. So if yo found out anything let me know so I can stop being paranoid or I can make an appointment with my doctor.

Hey, I have had the copper IUD in for 6 weeks. I am having terrible pain, almost every other day. I didnt bleed for the first 3 weeks, but have constantly since. When my boyfriend and I are being sexually active I can feel him moving the strings, which moves the IUD and cause me discomfort, followed by pain for a few days. I am seriously considering having this removed. I also feel like I'm pregnant (baring in mind I have been pregnant twice, I know what I'm looking for). I am already seriously fed up of it, I was on Implanon before this for 3 years, and bled all the way through it. I think it's time for me to come off contraception for a l

Adenomyosis Another cause of heavy bleeding

Worth a read if you suffer heavy bleeding,I found out after having hysterectomy I had this.

Synonyms: endometriosis interna, uterine endometriosis, internal endometriosis

General description: Adenomyosis is the presence of endometrial glands and supporting tissues in the muscle of the uterus where it would not occur normally. When the gland tissue grows during the menstrual cycle and then at menses tries to slough, the old tissue and blood cannot escape the uterine muscle and flow out of the cervix as part of normal menses. This trapping of the blood and tissue causes uterine pain in the form of monthly menstrual cramps. It also produces abnormal uterine bleeding when some of the blood finally escapes the muscle resulting in prolonged spotting. It more often occurs in the posterior wall of the uterus.

Is it common?
The background incidence of adenomyosis in all women either with or without symptoms is not known precisely because only in recent years has MRI imaging been able to diagnose adenomyosis without doing a hysterectomy. In studies of chronic pelvic pain in which women had hysterectomies, the incidence of adenomyosis is about 15% to 25% (1, 2). It seems to be about the same incidence in hysterectomy specimens from women without pain as from women with pain so it is possible that this represents the background incidence. Differentiating features Cyclic, cramping uterine pain beginning later in reproductive life (generally after age 35) and often associated with prolonged and heavy menses is the classic presentation. It is difficult to differentiate from endometriosis if there is no abnormal bleeding and if it occurs earlier than age 40. Endometriosis tends to present earlier (20-40) and if there is abnormal bleeding it tends to be premenstrual spotting rather than heavy and prolonged nenses. The abnormal bleeding pattern of adenomyosis is similar to that found in perimenopause due to dysfunctional ovulatory problems.

On pelvic exam there may be uterine enlargement from about 6-10 weeks pregnancy size.

Patterns of adenomyosis as recognized by MRI seem to either be diffusely spread throughout the uterus (about 66%) or focal lesions (33%) that only occur in one or two places (3). On T2-weighted magnetic resonance images, diffuse adenomyosis usually appears as diffuse thickening of the endometrial-myometrial junctional zone (7-37 mm; mean, 16 mm) with homogeneous low signal intensity. Focal adenomyosis appears on both T2-weighted and contrast-enhanced T1-weighted MR images as a localized, low-signal-intensity round or oval mass with a diameter of 2-7 cm (mean, 3.8 cm) and usually has ill-defined margins.

Other features
The uterus can feel soft and boggy on pelvic exam. Sometimes adenomyosis is associated with uterine fibroids (leiomyomata) (4 ). For an in depth discussion on pre surgical ultrasound imaging and diagnosis of adenomyosis, see (The Presurgical Diagnosis of Diffuse Adenomyosis by Helen Bickerstaff, MB, BChir. Cause Cause is basically unknown although there seems to be an increased incidence associated with any child birth (5), pregnancy terminations (6), Cesarean sections 7) and and even tubal ligations (8). It would appear that any trauma to the uterus may increase the chance that endometrial tissue becomes relocated from the uterine lining. Unnecessary
studies Computerized axial tomography (CAT scans) are not sensitive enough for imaging adenomyosis.

Endometrial biopsy is not used to diagnose adenomyosis. It just picks up the surface endometrium and not pockets deep in the myometrium. It may be indicated to rule out other intrauterine causes of bleeding, however.

Natural history

untreated The glandular tissue probably just becomes atrophic with scarring over after a woman goes through menopause. Estrogen replacement therapy may retard this process.

Adenomyosis may occasionally be associated with post menopausal bleeding (9).

Goals of therapy (Rx)
If the primary symptom is cyclic menstrual cramps, the therapeutic goal is to decrease or totally cure those cramps.

If abnormal bleeding is a major symptom, the goal is to restore the bleeding pattern to normal or to totally stop any menstrual or abnormal bleeding.

1st choice therapy Hysterectomy is probably over 80% effective in eliminating pain and abnormal bleeding (10, 11) if a woman has finished childbearing and is willing to undergo surgery. Gonadotropin releasing agents (e.g., Lupron ®) are the first choice for medical therapy for the pain but the problem is that the adenomyosis seems to recur after discontinuing the therapy. It can be used, however, to reduce the amount of adenomyosis and then the remaining areas can be resected if, for example, a woman wants to get pregnant (12).

For abnormal bleeding problems and desire for uterine conservation, a progesterone intrauterine contraceptive device can also be used to improve irregular bleeding (13).

Other therapies used Hysteroscopic endometrial ablation can be a treatment for adenomyosis. One study found that endometrial ablation had about the same success rate of improving heavy menstrual periods (about 60%) whether or not adenomyosis was present (14). Thus if heavy bleeding rather than menstrual cramps is the main symptom of adenomyosis, then endometrial ablation should be considered as a treatment.

Laparoscopic myometrial resection or open myometrial resection is another treatment used if the adenomyosis is focal (15).

Treatments to avoid Chronic narcotic pain medications should be avoided.

Reason for Rx choices
Hysterectomy is much more likely to provide relief from symptoms than the other therapies. If further childbearing is desired, one of the medical therapies is the procedure of choice. An MRI should be performed and if there is a diffuse pattern of adenomyosis present, a progesterone IUCD would be the best choice for about 6 months or however long before an attempt to conceive is desired. If the MRI shows one or a few focal lesions, luteinizing hormone releasing factor can be used to reduce the area of involvement and then a laparoscopic or open resection can be performed.

Hysteroscopic endometrial ablation is a good non hysterectomy choice for women with predominantly abnormal uterine bleeding and who either have high operative risks, or who are adverse to removal of the uterus.

Adenomyosis

Worth a look if you have heavy bleeding

I found out after having my hysterectomy I had this.
