Save Serious Time and Money by Preparing Well for your Soundproofing Project!
Using the right materials and techiques, you can soundproof most anything!
Do It Once- Do It RIGHT!
Choose Your Soundproofing Techniques, Materials and Products well! You only have one shot at it! Then it's covered up inside your walls, ceiling or floor!
Find out the Secrets Soundproofing Experts won't tell you and save time and money!Acoustical consultants and many contractors have the knowledge they have gathered by study and experience to provide quality sound control. Normally they won't share that with you unless you retain them and have signed a contract. Whether you are soundproofing a house, office, vehicle, or anything, the knowledge of how to do it right is invaluable.
While there is some information on the web, many times it's incomplete and may even be wrong. This can cause a severe financial strain if a project does not attain the desired level of sound control.
Usually a soundproofing problem is not recognized until it's too late to deal with it reasonably: Did you put your Drum Practice Room or Home Theater next to the Babies Room? Build Bedrooms over the Kitchen or Game-Room? Buy a house or apartment that had undiscovered sound and noise defects such as noisy neighbors or loud traffic?
Usually special soundproofing products are needed to add sound blocking to walls, floors and ceilings whereas if it was done during the construction phase, it would be much cheaper. Sometimes special construction techniques can keep costs down. Certain kinds of sound control insulation such as cotton batting can do double duty as thermal insulation, too.
The nice thing is that passive soundproofing keeps on working and adds real value to the home.
Have you already made the mistake of using materials that would seem to be right to find out that they are ineffectual or actually made things worse? (Such materials are egg crate cartons, Styrofoam, blow-in insulation & rugs, to name a few).
The Three Basic Rules of Soundproofing are:
1). Try to deal with the sound at the source: It's easier than after it's expanded all over.
2). Put Something Between the Source and the Target: The direct sound path determines the final intensity of the delivered sound.
3). Sound cannot be absorbed away: Putting absorbent panels on the walls and ceiling will just change the acoustics of the room- sound'll blow right through it.
There are many things that can go wrong, such as not using enough of the right materials or using the wrong materials or installing materials improperly. Just as you are urged to get several bids-using a contractor on a project, you should talk over the job with some experts such as:

What people call us about!
1)The voice on the phone was female and speaking so low I had trouble understanding her.
"Do you have anything to block sound through my floor?" She whispered.
"Yes", I replied. "Mass Loaded Vinyl is a excellent sound blocker. What kind of sound are we dealing with?"
"It's the new people below", She replied. "They were working on their motorcycles in their living room late at night and when they fired them up, next day I asked them nicely to try to be a little more quiet and now I have a big problem.
Since then, they have attached their speakers to their ceiling and leave their stereo on day and night. I can't get any sleep. I need something to block the sound because I can't move out"!
"Well, MLV won't block that kind of noise unless you double it up. Every layer is said to reduce the sound throughput by about 50%, but you'd need several layers. It's normally put under the carpet. Why are you whispering"?
"Their stereo is off now and they can listen to me when I'm on the phone!
I want it, my bedroom is 10' X 10'. I'll put it on the floor if I can walk on it".
"Sure you can. MLV's very durable. A roll is 100 sq. ft, so how much do you need"?
She ordered several rolls and I almost forgot about it, but a few weeks later the familier voice was on the phone again, but not a whisper. "It was a big improvement! Send me 2 more rolls"!
This went on until she had placed 8 layers on her floor. She walks out of her building now with a smug look on her face that the tenants below can't figure out!
2)
Reminds me of the lady who called to confirm what she had been told by a contractor that if she painted the walls of her hallway black, it would absorb sound and reduce sound transfer into the adjoining rooms....
Almost as bad as the people who drive miles to get egg cartons or carton packing pulp to put on their walls!
Or the guy who filled his walls with sand until they burst!
