Mobile phone etiquette

Mobile phone etiquette: good manners when using a mobile phone

Mobile phone etiquette is all about how you use your mobile phone while in public, well mostly.

Being courteous and considerate whilst using your phone in public is just basic, there are no set rules, it is all up to the individual user's discretion.
This is all pretty new to most people, it is easy to get carried away while talking on the phone and totally forget one's surroundings, after all mobiles have not been around for that long, ten years or so they were the size of a house brick and weighed about as much.

Things have changed somewhat, now most people have a mobile of some sort, some are pretty basic while others do everything short of a cooked breakfast.
Unfortunately mobile phone manners have not yet improved.

We learn table manners, how to be polite in society and how to be respectful of others, there are rules, the do's and dont's of what constitute good manners and how to behave, let's now introduce basic mobile phone etiquette and start to behave sensibly when it comes to our mobile .

Have you ever stood in a queue at the supermarket and could not help but overhear someone arguing with her husband, this happened to me recently, the argument started fairly quietly, she did try to keep her voice down, but then this rose to near screams very quickly, talk about airing your dirty laundry in public. For the sake of decency I cannot relate to you what was being said, or should I say screamed into the phone, she definitely took down his manhood a peg or er...two!
When she finished her very public emasculation everyone in the store cheered. I admit to being entertained for a few minutes but I was also a little sad that arguments cannot wait until one is home or in a private place.

Mobile phones are taking over

I remember laughing while watching Star Trek when Captain Kirk would speak into what looked like a wrist watch and say the famous words:" Beam me up Scotty"
Had you told someone twenty years ago that anyone could have one of those small phones, no wires, no cables just this wee little thing able to get your voice and/or pictures to someone else right across the world, they would have told you to stop watching Star Trek and get back to Earth. I wish I had known, I would have bought shares in Nokia!

Now I see people of all ages walking down the road seemingly talking to themselves, one arm bend holding their ever smaller cell phone to their ear. Young or old, rich or poor, a mobile phone is available to most.

Do not speak on a mobile phone while driving

Mobile phone rule number 1

This is not just bad manners, it is very dangerous and is now illegal in most countries in the world.

I have seen women after picking up their children from school, animatedly talking on their mobile, wavering across the road, oblivious to traffic.

DON'T DO IT IT IS BAD MANNERS AND DANGEROUS

Mobile phone rule number 2

Keep your distance from other people while talking on your mobile, everyone does not want to share in your mobile conversation, nobody wants to know what you did last nigh tor what your shopping list is.

When in a public place find a quiet spot to talk.

Switch off your phone

Mobile phone rule number 3

When in the theater, cinema, public library, at the concert hall, in a hospital, court room, switch off that phone!
This is really bad manners to spoil it for everyone else by letting your phone ring in any of those places, if you must leave your phone on switch it to silent and please avoid texting as well. Save it for a more appropriate place and time.

Keep your voice down

Mobile phone rule number 4

There is no need to shout down the phone, there is an inbuilt microphone that is so sensitive that it can pick up a whisper.

If you have bad reception try moving to a better spot, no amount of shouting will make reception any better and you will only look like a complete tool!

Keep it short

Mobile phone rule number 5

There is no need to ramble on when answering your mobile, keep it short and to the point.

This is for at least 3 good reasons:

  • it is boring for everyone else

  • you could be frying your brain

  • it may cost a lot more for your caller

I agree with your info here. I'm well aware of the danger of using the cell while driving, just the other day, I watched someone drive through a red light, completely oblivious to everything but the cell phone in their hand. I know, 'cause I was the one slamming on the brakes and looking at a green light.

Good for you to feature this here. I simply detest those who talk so loud especially in airports. I hope they read this.

'Star Trek' Producers Awarded Cell Phone Patent Damages

"Hollywood, CA | In a landmark case, a U.S. Federal Court has awarded $11.8 billion to Viacom, Paramount Communications and the estate of Gene Roddenberry. The ruling ends a seven-year dispute during which Viacom claimed "intellectual rights" to cellular telephone technology, insisting the concept came from the original Star Trek television series produced in the late 1960s.

A source inside the legal team representing AT&T, Samsung, Panasonic, Cingular, Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile and Nextel admitted, "We never had a prayer. Roddenberry obviously thought of it first."
