Rummer Mid-Century Modern Homes

I live in a Rummer built home. It is like a loft on the ground with a big, open living area with high ceilings and views to the back yard. Rummer homes are mid century marvels that most everyone living in one, loves, with many who would like to own one themselves. These homes were built from the mid 1960s up until the mid 1970s. Some in our neighborhood are the original home owners and the newer homeowners have a strong affinity to maintain them in the 'Rummer style'.
Rummer homes are oriented towards the backyard, with floor to ceiling glass, the home and yard merge into one.

Mid Century Modern Homes

Rummer Homes - Mid-Century Modern Wonders!

Typically, a Rummer Home is a one level, mid-century modern style and either flat roofed and/or with a vaulted peak central gable and an aggregate concrete floor atrium or gallery open floor plan with lots of glass and sliding doors that blur the line of the interior with the back yard landscape, a wood burning fireplace, post and beam construction with wood ceilings and sky lights, in-floor radiant heating, step-down tiled Roman shower/tub with a wall of glass;
and these Rummer Homes - Mid-Century Modern Wonders are very much sought after and have an unusual loyalty by their owners. They have been described as sleek, sexy, openness, expansive, very contemporary, ground floor loft, a celebration of indoor-outdoor living, simplicity, functionalism, efficiency, party house, an object of art.
Rummer homes are found all over the Portland Metropolitan Area of Oregon.

I think of this as a tribute and a way to honor the Rummer's with what they have built and in which we live in.
To celebrate the Rummer / Mid-Century Modern home that is is in the Portland Metro area.
To promote awareness and appreciation of the Rummer / Mid-Century Modern legacy and historical significance and to encourage Rummer home owners to preserve these important architectural marvels.
To educate and advocate these special homes we live in.

My hope is to encourage owners in maintaining their Rummer / Mid-Century Modern homes in their respective look and style, thus keeping with the integrity of the Rummer home construction.

The Portland Japanese Garden are a must see!

It is beautiful year round.

I first visited Portland's Japanese Garden in the early 1980s on a visit with my dad when I lived in Texas. It was a very foggy day and was for the most part mysterious and magical at the same time, due in part because the view was very limited.
After moving here I was immensely pleased to know that it was better than I had remembered and is a place I frequent and immerse myself in. I enjoy wandering the gardens pathways in no particular order and as each of the four season develops, the gardens always amaze. I look forward to each visit, and I think you will, too!

    Fascinating houses! But who or what was Rummer? Is that the architect's or builder's name?
  • StanHouseman May 13, 2011 @ 3:44 pm | delete
    Yes and I love living in the one we own. Bob Rummer was a builder who built hundreds of these in the Portland area. Frank Lloyd Wright was his inspiration.
