Essence Of An American Witch

Ranked #10,208 in Culture & Society, #204,132 overall

How and Why I Became A Witch

Photobucket
I created this lens to allow others to peek into the life of a typical American witch, what we do, what we are and basic beliefs. I certainly do not speak for other witches, their beliefs or opinions. We are all individuals just like anyone else. I am trying to explain (not defend) witchcraft, some facts about real witches, discuss "wanna-be witches," black and white magick, and more. I also feature recommended products, tools, music, links of interest and other information. To learn how to perform your own spells, whether you're a witch or not (it doesn't matter) visit this guide to spellcrafting for witches or non-witches.
I am a solitary witch. I am not Wiccan, per se. I have a few different beliefs but many are similar to Wicca. I really don't label myself into any particular denomination but the closest to any would be Traditional. It has taken me several years to truly believe I am most likely a Natural Witch. This doesn't make me bad or good, it just makes me who I am. This is who I was born to be.
Please feel free to question, comment or share your own stories in the comment section. Recommend your own witch, pagan or spiritual links there, too. I'd love to hear from you, witch or non-witch!

I Was Never Ashamed. I Followed My Heart

Just like everyone else, I was born under certain sun, moon, and other planetary aspects that make up much of my personality. Unlike certain organized religions, I do not necessarily abide by a bible. I follow my heart, my personal spirituality, my love for God, respect others' beliefs and try my best to be a good person and citizen. I often tire of having to defend myself to those who choose to only judge me instead of taking time to understand my beliefs. Although, throughout the years, I have learned to utilize my late mothers' advice to "consider the source" and write it off to ignorance.
I was born a witch. I don't know why, I just was. I purely know this in my heart. I have known this even before I really knew what a "witch" was. Being adopted at birth, I don't know my birth parents or too much about my family history. My birth mother was Irish and English and my birth father was full Native American. I was adopted at 1 week of age and later converted to my parents' Jewish (Reform) religion. However, I have declared that I was a witch to my family ever since I was a little girl even though typically influenced by other kids and Halloween traditions that witches were ugly, green with warts on their faces, and evil! Though I was none of those things, according to my family, I was always adamant that I was a witch.

MY DEDICATION TO THE CRAFT

pentagram spin
O nce I learned and studied for several years, I "officially" became a witch. This is where one makes the full, 100% commitment to the duties and loyalties of all that is involved in such a dedication. I have never regretted my commitment and I remain dedicated to The Craft. It is who I am. I am often asked if I have ever used "dark magick" against someone. Yes, it has been tempting now and then to perform magick in a non-productive manner simply for revenge purposes, but the answer is no. I have always refrained. Losing many or all powers granted upon someone accepted into the Craft (or even anyone performing such magick) is much too risky for the mere explanation of magick or wonder. To me, it's not worth a day or two of satisfaction knowing that someone suffered for their actions. If I do use magick on someone who has done me, my friends or family harm, I use my head, not my heart. I'd rather teach them a lesson and show them their wrong doings or evil with hopes to avoid it from happening to others.
T he bottom line is that one need not be a witch, become officially initiated or even self-initiated. If you feel you are a witch or simply believe in what witches believe, you may be a natural witch. Even if you're not, you can still believe what is in your heart. You can still utilize the powers of the Universe because it is available to all souls; witch or non-witch. It's the power of prayer, belief and will. Never let any organized religion TELL you what to believe. Always listen to your soul and use the free will God gave us all.

My Religious & Spiritual Background

And a Bit of My Two Cents

I still consider myself Jewish, but I just have a difficult time with some of the ideas associated with any organized religion. However, as an adult, I do relate more to the Jewish Mysticism aspects of the religion. One thing I have always truly appreciated about Judaism is the lack of certain judgment regarding personal life issues. In Hebrew school, we were taught that God is LOVE. We were not ever taught to fear God. We were taught that God knows we will sin sometimes but we needed to forgive ourselves, fix the problem, learn from it and move on. He will still be waiting for us in heaven when this life comes to an end, regardless. That is a belief I still carry with me today as a Jewish person, a witch and a soul upon this earth. I will always wish for all religions and beliefs to always teach love and tolerance and for everyone to listen to their heart and believe what they feel is the right path for them. Isn't that the way it should be?

"Good Witch/Bad Witch"

soapbox
There are many types of witches. That is a fact. However, most witches do not use their powers or abilities for inflicting harm unto others. This is a very common misconception. A large amount of witches use their abilities to aid others in not only soul-searching tasks but to rid and teach how to rid negative energies from one's life. We are often judged as worshipers of a "devil" or "Satan." That is a big contradiction to most of us. A majority of witches do not even believe in a "God of the Devils" aka "Satan." However, we are often scrutinized for stating this because some will say (just as in the olden times) "If you believe in the devil, you are a worshiper...If you say you don't....you are more susceptible to his powers." It is a TOTAL catch 22 for all witches. That was also the method used in the Witch Trials.

One suggestion: Please don't ask a witch if he or she "is a good witch or a bad witch." That is just the same as asking a Christian if "they are a good Christian or a bad Christian." Besides, you may get an answer you didn't expect!

Black & White Magick

Witcraft magick is sometimes categorized as "white," "gray" or "black." Many of us believe magick is not black, white or gray. It is in the heart of the witch; meaning magick is magick and you send out whatever energies and intent that you choose. Negative energy attracts negative energy and the same goes with positive. That is for any soul, witch or not.
One of the most important reasons untrained/uninformed people should use EXTREME caution when performing a spell is due to interference. Reminds you of football, right? Well, it is actually the same concept. One must take the time to realize every single situation or person that may cause interference to your intent. Such an event can cause negative or even tragic results. Here is an example to clarify this. Say you do a spell to attract money into your life. Unless you specify in detail HOW you wish to obtain money, you may send out energies into the universe that may result in you receiving money due to an inheritance or insurance policy. Get it? Maybe your house will burn down or you wind up in a car accident. Also, regarding money spells, never ask for more than what you really need. Never be greedy. Don't do a spell to win the $20 million lottery. Besides, you are highly unlikely to be successful. Be realistic and fair. Always give something back to the universe when asking for something. Plant a tree, make a charitable donation or even simply be kinder to others in the world. We should all do things like that whether asking for anything.

New Age Portal

There are many topics to learn about here!

I really enjoy this website and you will, too. There are many topics relating to new age practices and beliefs. The first link is the main site and then I provided just a few of the sub topics to check out.
New Age Portal
Morning Star was created to serve a gateway for all esoteric, spiritual and new age subjects. Inside you will find many topics covered, from astrology to parapsychology, kabbalah to yoga. Each one begins with a short introduction and features articles, e-books, software and any other useful resources we can find. We also have a new age links directory, which includes only links to the highest quality websites.
New Age Portal- Psychic Abilities
A psychic is anyone who is able to perform supernatural feats with the power of their mind. When I think of a psychic I always think of telepathy, but actually the term is now often used to refer to a whole group of clairvoyant and mediumistic abilities such as seeing the future, communicating with dead souls, and others. An individual psychic may have one, several or all of these abilities.
Astrology
"Astrology is one of only a very small number of occult disciplines which have gained widespread popularity today.

This section encompasses all of the different traditions, such as Western, Chinese and Vedic astrology."
Parapsychology
"Parapsychology is basically the scientific study of so called 'supernatural' or 'paranormal' phenomena. Practitioners of parapsychology are expected to maintain an open mind as to the reality of such phenomena whilst at the same time remaining skeptical and not succumbing to unsupported beliefs. Common subjects of study include telepathy and other forms of psychic activity, and hauntings and the power of mediums."

One of My Experiences Using Magick

The Stalker Needed to GO!

Making a Dangerous Stalker "Go Away"

THE REASON:
I was asked by a friend to lead and assist her and her Wiccan coven sisters in a ritual to help a non-witch friend of theirs in need due to a stalker ex-boyfriend. This man had trashed her car, harassed her at work, at home, and even set her apartment on fire! He threatened her life and anyone elses life involved with her, too. Yeah, this S.O.B. had to go. I was flattered by the invitation to help out, though I admit I was a bit nervous about it. I am always a bit anxious when it comes to doing magick such as this. A few of the coven members were new to the Craft. They all agreed it was in the best interest to have someone with a bit more experience and intuitive abilities to be present and assist. Feeling totally justified of it's importance and great need, I agreed to help.

THE DECISION AND PREPARATION:
I decided to do a Binding, but I also concluded that we needed to add a safety net; using what I call a "go away" spell. We needed to be certain that in case the binding either wears off after some time or it isn't strong enough, at least he would be physically far away. Thus, making it more difficult for him to get to his victim again.
I immediately sensed this man had more trouble involved in his life than just being a lunatic stalker. Using his picture and a personal belonging of his, I was able to envision a courtroom and policemen surrounding the energy about him. I asked the woman (the victim) if she knew he was into cocaine. She said she thinks he did cocaine, but wasn't sure of much more. She said he hadn't been arrested for anything that she knew of besides the miscellaneous stalking charges that he spent only one night in jail for. I had an overwhelming feeling that he was dealing or heavily involved with big time drugs. Then a light bulb when on in my head. "That's what we're gonna use," I told them. "We found our angle." I just hoped it would work. I also wasn't exactly sure of what the results would bring by doing this. I did have to be reassured of one thing. After explaining that the Universe was going to handle with this once we send the energies out. I can't state exactly HOW the evil man will go away. I asked the woman if she understood and if she could live with whatever fate was in his future. She gave us the green light, so we proceeded.

Photobucket

THE OUTCOME:
Approximately 9 days later, I received a call from the victim for which we did this ritual. She was extremely grateful and happily told me that the man was arrested on 2 felony drug charges, 3 counts of stalking related charges, and one more pending charge of attempted murder for arson since she was in the apartment at the time of the fire. Finally, this woman can get on with her life with the freedom of not having to be escorted everywhere she went and not having to look over her shoulder every few seconds.
After the ritual was finished, I was flooded with compliments and appreciation for giving my free time to those I had just met. I refused to take the money the woman continued to offer. I humbly accepted the compliments being told how gifted I am. I don't know about that, but I do know that God gave me this ability as one of my main life purposes, just like He gave all of us something unique. I also know that I am a proud witch. It is often an experience such as this one that makes me humbly aware I am blessed. It gives me reassurance that I am utilizing my abilities, the Craft, the tools and gift of magick for the right reasons.

I Will Reveal One Secret. Sort Of

Spells-A Word of Warning

T here are several books and websites that will provide you with spells from anything ranging from money spells to love spells. In all honesty, anyone, including non-witches can perform a spell. It is one thing to "go through the motions" using colored/scented candles, pictures, personal items, incense, etc. However, it is the INTENT of the wisher that makes the spell work; if it works at all. It is also not just about reciting the words you find in any spell book. Being an actual witch helps, but as I said, one does not have to be a witch to try. The power of prayer is a big must. I know that may sound hokey, but it is true. Very true.

R egarding those on-line, professed "guaranteed spells" performed for you, STAY AWAY! In addition, NEVER allow a psychic, witch or ANYONE give you a reading and then tell you there has been a curse placed upon you. Here's where they scam you. "I can remove the curse for you. It will cost you an additional $xx but I guarantee 100% to remove it." If you ever hear that, WALK OUT THE DOOR and never look back.
P ersonally, I will not do certain spells for others (even for my best friends) if I don't feel justified. Love spells are an absolute no-no in my opinion. How would one know if it was "real love" or the spell? That would simply only make matters worse in the long run for the person. My advice? Find love on your own.
beating heart
You will ALWAYS know it is real if it works out for you. If it doesn't work out or never happens with that one certain someone you hoped it to be, it was not meant to be.

Peace & Tolerance

People are naturally skeptical by nature and most witches possess an open, yet cautious mind. Being open-minded is a positive characteristic but not when it makes you inclined to believing everything that you are told to believe.
I believe every individual should approach and gather as much information as possible on a subject (such as their own religion, spirituality or beliefs) before he or she forms an opinion and decision regarding what is best suited for him or her. Witches strive for balance. Whatever one's beliefs, we all need to be courteous, understanding and diplomatic towards others. It is also important to realize that all paths lead to the same foundation...one's Higher Power. For a majority of folks, including me, is God. Therefore, respect all paths, even if you don't agree with them. Stand up for your beliefs, but don't belittle or look ill upon others for their views. Always try to be confident and respect your body mentally and physically, for it is your temple. Your mind and personal will are very powerful tools and can bring about astonishing change. It is no secret that when a witch uses magick, it is within the heart, mind, and mainly the power of will that brings success to the intent. This is the same with the power of prayer. One does not have to be a witch to do spells (but it helps! ;)) Think of spell craft as a prayer on steroids. But, know that witches are not only about spells. That is probably the smallest percentage of what we are really about.

If I Could With My Craft, I Would

A Poem I Wrote

I believe most witches feel this way.

If I could cast a spell on the world

To make more peace than violence, I would.

If I could only find the words

comforting the lonely and sad, I would.

If I could mend the broken hearts

of those crying themselves to sleep, I would.

If I could change all bad into good,

put all evil to death; make nonsense understood,

change water to wine; turn malignance benign,

change sorrow to smiles; inches to miles,

The disabled could walk and the mute could then talk

All poor into wealth; give the sickly good health.

Crime non-existent; no parent too distant;

no more bad seeds; only love supercedes

Everyone's an equal; there's one Bible; no "sequel"

But... Even if I could change a blessing from curse,

I'd leave it alone ~ it's up to powers of the Universe.

'cause I'd throw off life's balance;

so I'll weep in my silence.

For balance is needed for the cycles to live

and strength in life forces ~ when you take, you must give.

But if I could, I'd at least lessen the pain

for those giving so much yet, receive less than their gain.

Do Witches Really Cast Hexes?

Yes, Some Do.

People commonly personify witches as evil and all they do is curse and hex others. Wiccans are strictly opposed to hexes and curses. Traditional witches (or "Trad Witches") do not have limitations. However, if the thought arises of casting a hex or curse we must ask ourselves if it ethical and completely necessary. Any witch will tell you that if it is regarding defense of loved ones and family the answer is often yes. On the other hand, if it relates to using magick against someone because they cut you off on the highway, then for the majority, the answer is no. See the section in this lens "Black & White Magick" for more on this. Also, for more information about magick, the natural powers of the universe, how to do spells and much more, visit Modern-Witchcraftand especially, Guide for Spells and How To's About Safely Using Magick for Success.

Quotations of Interest

"We are not evil. We don't harm or seduce people. We are not dangerous. We are ordinary people like you. We have families, jobs, hopes, and dreams. We are not a cult. This religion is not a joke. We are not what you think we are from looking at T.V. We are real. We laugh, we cry. We are serious. We have a sense of humor. You don't have to be afraid of us. We don't want to convert you. And please don't try to convert us. Just give us the same right we give you--to live in peace. We are much more similar to you than you think." -Margot Adler

"If you take [a copy of] the Christian Bible and put it out in the wind and the rain, soon the paper on which the words are printed will disintegrate and the words will be gone. Our bible IS the wind and the rain." Herbalist Carol McGrath as told to her by a Native-American woman.

"I don't think witchcraft is a religion. I would hope the military officials would take a second look at the decision they made." G.W. Bush (R), as Governor of Texas. Interviewed on ABC's Good Morning America, 1999-JUN-24. He disapproved of Wiccan soldiers being given the same religious rights as others in the military.

"We should educate people that 'Witch' is not evil but ancient and positive. The first time I called myself a 'Witch' was the most magical moment of my life." -Margot Adler.

"When one defines oneself as Pagan, it means she or he follows an earth or nature religion, one that sees the divine manifest in all creation. The cycles of nature are our holy days, the earth is our temple, its plants and creatures our partners and teachers. We worship a deity that is both male and female, a mother Goddess and father God, who together created all that is, was, or will be. We respect life, cherish the free will of sentient beings, and accept the sacredness of all creation." -Edain McCoy

So what makes you a witch, as opposed to just a person who realized the power of prayer and ritual and charity in affecting lives? something most of believers already know?
I am Jewish, but my husband (a lot) and me (a little) have some psychic gifts and strong intuition.... If you ask G-d for answers, you will get them, you just have to see them when they come... I recently had a major personal miracle as a result of prayer and a major promise to charity. I escaped by the narrow margin, but everything that could go either way, went right. Of course somebody could say it was just life and nothing out of the ordinary, but there were odds against me.

I am quite impressed that there is a real witch (jewish, principled, trendy, and good-natured) who writes and expressess herself in a firm and natural way(!). I admire your conviction of "being good and a balanced witch", and encouraging people to do good (generally). I've always thought that there are witches like you, helping people and making an example to believe in God. And it amazes me still that you write to inform people that. This is quite a revelation to me, who have always thought that witches do not go "in public" about what and who they are, and are often "in secret". whew. what a long way of telling you I like your lens because it's honest and open-minded..haha..thank you, I have been posting it at facebook and twitter (I just discovered it now, while on duty and at the eve of halloween).

Interesting story about the stalker. Welcome to the spirituality group! It is kind of funny, I have had prayers that manifested act the same way a spell seems to.
For instance one time I prayed for money. I got in a car accident and got money from it. One time I prayed my ex not get child support from me as at the time I could not afford it. He did not get any plus that same day he was arrested and went to jail for years (something I had no idea he had done) and I even got custody of my children back.

The only spell I ever tried was a full moon spell...

This is a wonderful lens, well done and thank you for being so open and honest. I am just like you - I was raised with a religious education and I believe wholly in God, angels and being a good person, but I am also a witch. So many people assume that if you are a witch, you don't believe in God or are against God. This is so untrue. 5 stars!
