The Myth And The Legend...

So What Is The Myth And What Is The Reality?
More Incredible Than A Picasso Portrait?
In short the myth is that Hemingway, Picasso and Matisse all used Moleskines. We know this is not possible because Moleskine wasn't a registered brand until 1996 and the final one of the trio to die was Pablo Picasso on April 8, 1973; a full 23 years before Moleskine was a registered brand. The first edition modern-day Moleskine notebook was released in 1998 but there is some truth the Moleskine claim...
The belief that Hemingway had used Moleskine notebooks is based on his memoirs. In them, named "A Movable Feast", he claimed to have written on a non-descript notebook in a café in Paris. It is also claimed, not by Hemingway but by Modo & Modo, that until the mid-1980's there was a Moleskine notebook shop nearby. This store was thought to have made notebooks using real moleskins and not imitation leather like the Moleskines of today.
Pablo Picasso used a notebook much closer to today's Moleskines though as he used an "oil-cloth notebook with elastic closure and inner expandable pocket".
The Moleskine Brand
With more than around 5 million sales of Moleskine notebooks annually and many more sales through calenders, diaries etc. Moleskine have dominated the market for the last decade and show no signs of giving way to lesser-known competitors.
Moleskine have built their reputation on high quality and durable notebooks. Perfect for anyone and with the many different styles and more being introduced regularly, including the newest, Volant, there has never been a better time to join the Moleskine trend!

- Was browsing your lenses and have to say I really like your writing style. This may be embarrassing me for revealing my ignorance but I wish I knew what a Moleskin notebook is, and what exactly makes it so special? I'm tempted to learn more :)

- I love my Moleskine Notebooks. I use the Cahiers for projects, the large ruled notebook as a diary/daybook as I am working so I don't forget anything, and the small ruled notebooks travel everywhere with me. They are so fit for purpose and a thing of joy to use. Because they are so 'right' everything I put in them is invested with a degree of importance and it makes me focus on what I am doing> It causes great amusement among my friends who consider me to be a geek and probably 'chipped' yet I still use a notebook, fountain pen and pencil.....

- Great lens there! My 'Moleskine' is actually a Tesco Value Notebook which was bought for somewhere around the sum of twenty pence... does the trick though and actually looks pretty nice too. Nice work and I really like the way you've separated myth and reality also; provided for a very interesting read. :)
