What is the Purpose of a Money Belt

The purpose of a money belt seems obvious enough and that is to carry money in a safer place other than your pocket. If you live in an area in which pick pocketing and muggings are relatively common activities, you will want to consider such a money belt.

Unlike a fanny pack or a backpack, a money belt is seamless. Similar to a shirt, you can simply store your money in it and then tuck it into your pants. While you might not notice somebody sneaking a hand into your pocket, you are bound to notice a thief who has the audacity to try to slip his hand down the front of your pants. Having said that, this is unlikely to happen since he will not notice it in the first place.

How to Use a Money Belt

If you intend to use a money belt, it is important not to reach for the belt in public. This immediately alerts potential thieves that maybe watching you, that you are hiding your money. While this might still be a deterrent, if they notice that you have a significant chunk of change, they might still be willing to go for it.

Instead, carry a small amount of money in your pocket for absolute emergencies and then carry the rest of the money in your belt. Whenever you need to withdraw more from your money belt, simply slip into the bathroom and put more of it into your pocket.

As an additional measure of security, do not carry more money on your person, irrespective of where you put it, than you will actually need in a given outing. Why unnecessarily risk all of your money at once, when you could keep most of it hidden in the hotel safety deposit box?
