Did a Man really walk on the Moon, or was the Moon Landing a Hoax?

For some time now moon landing conspiracy theory supporters claim that the moon landing never really took place, but was actually produced by clever movie makers!

The moon landing conspiracy theory revolves around a few key issues, mainly footage and photographs, being cited as evidence in support of the moon landing hoax claim.

There's the flag, the footprint, the shadows, etc.

This lens discusses some of the more compelling of the moon landing conspiracies.

Why is the Astronaut illuminated in this Picture?

The figure should be dark as it's in the shade!

This photo of Aldrin on the footpad of the Lunar Module is often used to support the moon landing hoax theory. The claim is that an alternative light source was used to illuminate the astronaut, who should be dark, as he's in the shade.

However, the moon's surface is highly reflective. If you look at the moon in the night sky, you do get the impression it glows, yet it is the light of the sun which is reflected. It is the reflection of sunlight of the moon's surface which illuminates the astronaut in the shadow.

Old Glory waving in the Wind

One of the most popular moon landing conspiracy claims

How can the flag be "waving" on the moon, where there is no wind?

When they rigged the flag's assembly they inserted a stiff wire into the fabric, as to not leaving the flag just hang flat against the pole. The waving effect was created by erecting the flag assembly and anchoring it in the ground.

Multiple Shadow Angles in Photographs

This moon landing conspiracy theory also suggest multiple light sources!

Photos were taken on a diverse topography, meaning there were lots of dips and irregularities on the surface of the moon.

The contours of the ground produce various shadow lengths, as well as shadow angles.

One Can't leave a Footprint without Moisture Present!

Another photograph fueling the moon landing conspiracy theory

It is widely believed that one cannot leave a pronounced footprint, like this one, without the presence of water. Moisture is required to give substance to the dirt and hold it together.

Try making a footprint in dry sand: The sand collapses on itself and only a very weak hint of a footprint is left.

This, however, depends entirely on the substance the footprint is being left on. If, for example, one would use talcum powder to leave a print, it would look similar to the one in the Photo. The surface dust on the moon is similar to talcum powder, in that it keeps it's shape without the presence of moisture, once stepped on.

The Pictures taken on the Moon should show a Sky filled with Stars!

Why are there no Stars?

This is a phenomenon atributable to photography: When taking a picture at night faint distant objects do not show up on the picture. This happens because the brightness of nearby objects washes out the film. In this case the reflective surface of the moon is too bright for the film to pick up any stars in the lunar sky.
