The Apollo 11 Moon Shot ~ Senior Squids Salute The Moon

The Moon tribute ~ A Senior Squids Lensograhy.

It was the Moon Shot that was heard 'round the world. Truly, America's Apollo 11 mission literally made the world stop for breath taking moments as Neil Armstrong highlighted the mission by being the first human to step onto the moon's surface. All across the planet people were either glued to televisions in their homes or crowded around storefront windows to watch in awe as Armstrong descended the ladder of the Lunar Excursion Module (L.E.M.) to step onto the moon.

July 20, 2009 will mark the 40th anniversary of one of mankind's greatest achievements and the Senior Squids are celebrating that event by paying tribute the Moon.

That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.~ Neil Armstrong

The Moon Tickles Our Fancy

apollo eleven moon shotThe Greeks called her Selene, the beautiful sister of Helios (the sun).In Norse mythology, Mani rides a chariot through the night sky attempting to escape the wolf Hati. From frogs to rabbits and young boys, the moon plays an important role in Native American lore and myths.

Is there a man in the moon? Is the moon made of cheese? Did the cow really jump over the moon? How did Baron Von Münchhausen lasso the moon so that he could climb to it? How deep is Moon River? How often does a Blue moon occur? All these questions and thousands more can be asked because of humankind's fascination by the largest heavenly body seen in the night sky.

We have always reached for the moon. Yearning to grab onto it and possess its romantic powers. Needing to conquer it. It is no wonder that when the space race between the Untied states and The Soviet Union began that the moon was earmarked as the finish line.

On May 25th , 1961, President John F. Kennedy committed the United States to the goal of winning the space race, thus fulfilling one of humanity's dearest dreams:

"I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth"

A Trip To The Moon

apollo eleven moon shotIn 1902, A French Film was released by the name A Trip To The Moon and became the first Science Fiction film made. The black white silent movie is listed as number 84 on the Top 100 Greatest Films list by The Village Voice.

The story, that is loosely based on two books by Sci-Fi heavyweights Jules Verne and H.G. Wells, tells a tale of a group of astronomers who build a rocket and launch themselves to the moon, discover a society of beings inhabiting the moon and make a narrow escape back to Earth.

Moon River

The moon has been forever seen as one of the most romantic ingredients in love story history.

Twenty-five year old Katy Melua from Georgia (not the Southern American state) has impressed a world of people with her stunning jazz vocals, and this rendition of the song Moon River is no exception.

The Moon, The Moment, and The Magic

The magic of the Moon Shot. Only one man knows that magic. The magic of mankind's first encounter with the surface of the moon. That moment was a romantic one for the rest of us, and one certainly filled with awe and wonder for Neil Armstrong.

The Moon In The Movies And Song Titles
There are some classics as well as hard to find titles on this list of movies and song titles that have to do with the moon.GramaBarb does it up right when she says that the most romantic backdrops always involve the moon.

The Moon, Big And Blue

Lensmaster flipflopnana has it made as she knows it, Just look at that name, livivn' the life in her flip flops. This spunky grandmother is a treat and a bright spot in anyone's day.

Give her a visit and you may walk away felling like a million sand dollars.

Once In A Blue Moon
The popular definition of a blue moon is the second full moon in a single calendar month. This current definition has only been around since 1946 and has only become widespread in the last 20 years. It seems that this definition is not really correct though.

The Moon At Its Sexiest

Lensmaster mgbphoto continues to bring us the beauty of her world through the camera lens. No matter where it she goes, one can bet there will be another Squidoo lens filled with spectacular photography shortly after she returns.

The Beauty That Blooms Under The Moon

Lensmaster Stazjia is a freelance author from the U.K. who is one of the sweetest and most knowledgeable lensmasters at Squidoo. She can be darned funny as well and gave me the idea for one of my favorite lenses as we were cutting up on Twitter on day. Give her a visit and enjoy the touching stories of her life.

Moonflower
Imagine sitting in your garden on a warm summer evening, a full moon overhead and beautiful moonflowers blooming nearby with their fragrance wafting on a light breeze.

Several different plants are called moonflowers but the one most commonly referred to by that name is the Ipomoea alba, a twining, vine-like plant.

Under The Indian Moon

Lensmaster Bev works at blazing speed while cranking out creative and solid well built lenses.

I got to know Bev just before a Giant challenge at Squidoo and consider her to be one of my bestest buds. Read some of her lenses and you'll soon agree; there is no way to keep up with the numbers AND quality. Besides, you'll probably find an instant friend in her.

Grandmother Moon
One of the first 3 spirits placed by the Great Spirit to watch over the children of Earth was Grandmother Moon.

She helps you with your dreams and visions. You can ask her to bring the dreams to you or to help you understand the meaning of the symbols in your visions.

The Romantic Destination Of The Moon

Lensmaster Kim is a vibrant and full of life nature photographer from Indiana. This Hoosier with a wonderful eye has studied photography at many prestigious schools and workshops and those influences can be seen all over her work.

Kim says that she practices photography spiritually and it helps keep her grounded an well focus on the world around her.

Fly Me To The Moon
"Music puts wings on the human spirit. What I mean is with a song in your heart, it's the only way to fly, buster. Music and flying, I'm irresistibly mad for both." - Frank Sinatra

This lens is about the song "Fly Me to the Moon," written in 1954 by Bart Howard and originally titled "In Other Words." The song was immortalized when Frank Sinatra recorded Quincy Jones' swinging arrangement in 1964. Anyone who knows me knows that I am a huge Sinatra fan. When Frank died in 1998, I had Frank's version of "Fly Me to the Moon" on my phone answering machine. Whenever I hear it, I smile.

Walking Hand In Hand Through The Moon's Gardens

Lensmaster Yvonne and Al (wife and husband team) are legendary for their lens created around the subject of what they see outside their window or in their Louisianna neighborhood.

From butterflies to snakes, as well as any number of plant and flower life; These two have a great eye and voice for the topic.

moon gardens
In today's busy world, the only time that most of us have to enjoy our garden is at night, so many people are creating Moon Gardens with fragrant white flowers and plants with silvery foliage. The bonus to these types of gardens is that they attract important pollinators like moths and mosquito eating bats. Such pollinators are on the decline, world wide, so in creating this night time sanctuary for yourself, you are also providing food for some of the beautiful and beneficial creatures of the night.

The Moon Is Romantic ~ No Matter How You Slice It

Lensmaster paperfacets Is enjoying her retirement with a vigorous dose of paper folding, camping, reading, and Squidooing.

Not only that, I envy her because she is now a published author.

NASA Picure Of The Day
The Astronomy Picture of the Day was my end of shift therapy when I worked the 4-12pm duty at the phone company. Since last April 2008, when I retired, I have not visited the cosmos site once. Last night I spent over an hour exploring the months of pictures I missed since.

Here is a collection of photos I gathered of the moon for your browsing. Enjoy these moon pictures from Astronomy Picture of the Day by NASA.

Moon Trippin'

Lensmaster Me...yeah....me! I am a retailer of biker leathers with my own e-commerec store. I also love to write, and toy with different ideas. You see, I fancy myself an artist and really like using Squidoo lenses as my canvasses.

Shhhhhhh! Don't tell me I am no artist, I have a fragile ego and may cry like a jilted school girl.

Pink Floyd Moon Jammin'
Pink Floyd moon jammin' is yet another legend about the band, which recorded Dark Side Of The Moon, that is shrouded in a cloak of mystique and myth. In the BBC studios with scientists and producers during the opening hours of the Apollo 11 mission to the moon, Pink Floyd was the pivotal component in a magical moment that was as rare as a Blue Moon.

The result of that moment was a rarely heard Pink Floydian musical trip titled Moonhead.

Willy's Lustful Moon

Lensmaster Val_Bonney has led a full life, yet the self proclaimed Valkyrie claims she's just getting warmed up.

If she is just now cutting loose, I think the world is in for a treat as this writer will dazzle us and bewitch our hearts with wonderfully playful prose. Check her stuff out and tell me the ride isn't going to be fun.

Shakespear's Moon
The poor old Moon - innocent ball of cheese that she is - has been loaded with more dubious superstition in literature than almost any other single object in the universe. Throughout the entire history of the written word, the Moon has been branded with countless uncomplimentary epithets and saddled with the blame for a vast catalogue of bad behaviour on the part of humankind

The Moon ~ What Does It Hold For You?

You must be a twit if the moon has not effected you in some way romantically or by some other interest during your lifetime. It's there, big as a basketball in the night sky, just waiting for us to pluck it from the garden of stars.

How goes the moon move you?
