Great places to take pictures
There are many fun things to see and do at Niagara Falls. These attractions all make good photo opportunities. Our Niagara Falls tour ride stops at each of them to allow you time to take their pictures.
You can also visit the Parks Commission's website for more information on the Floral Clock, Sir Adam Beck Hydro Dam, and the Whirlpool Rapids.
Our website also has a "Links" page that has links to other interesting Niagara Falls and Toronto attractions.
Hydro-electric Dam
The Sir Adam Beck Power station
The Niagara River is the greatest source of hydroelectric power. The Niagara River is home to several hydro-power plants. 2 of the more famous ones on the Canadian side are the Sir Adam Beck I and II. They were named, of coarse, after Sir Adam Beck, the first head of the Hydro-Electric Power Comission, and produce over 2 million kw of power. During the East Coast Blackout in the summer of 2003, Niagara Falls and area still had power. There are 14m (45 ft) diameter tunnels that run under the city of Niagara Falls that divert 68 Million l. of water a minute from the Falls, to the power stations. Niagara Falls used to erode at a rate of 1m (3ft) every 10 years. Because the water is diverted before it goes over the Falls, the erosion has slowed to 30 cm (12in) every 10 years. This diversion of water is also the cause of the Whirlpool reversal. Floral Clock
I'm often asked,"What's a floral clock?"
The answer is simple: a clock made out of flowers. The Floral Clock was built in 1950, by Ontario hydro. The clock is 40 foot in diameter. The face of the clock is maid of over 15,000 plants, and is changed twice a year. Each design is unique. Since Sir Adam Beck, was the head of Ontario hydro when it was built, he had that clock hands shaped as crutches, since his daughter was battling tuberculosis. The clock also has Westminster chimes, that sound every 15 minutes. You can go around the back the clock, to view the mechanism. There are also pictures of every face for clock has had since 1950. Niagara Whirlpool
Where the Niagara River makes a 90° turn, a Whirlpool has formed. The Whirlpool has a depth of 38 m or 120 ft. Like all whirlpools, the water circulates in a counterclockwise direction. There is an interesting phenomenon, that happens when there is low water due to the hydro dams diversion of the Niagara River. From about November 1 to April 1, the Whirlpool starts to move in a clockwise direction. This is because the water level is too low. During this time, the Niagara Whirlpool isn't technically a Whirlpool anymore. Above the Whirlpool, you can see the Spanish aero car. It was built an 1816 by Spanish engineers.
