Hamm Joins Twin on Sideline
By LYNN ZINSER
BEIJING - An ankle injury forced Morgan Hamm to withdraw from the Olympic Games on Thursday, dealing the United States men's gymnastics team another blow. Just a week ago his twin brother, Paul Hamm, the defending all-around gold medalist, was forced from the team with an injury.Morgan Hamm, 25, made the announcement after a workout Thursday, explaining that his ankle was not responding to treatment. As a result, he said, he could not make his landings in the vault and floor exercise. He initially injured the ankle last August, but it never completely healed.
"This was an extremely hard decision for me to make," Hamm said at a news conference while fighting back tears. "I've given everything I have to be able to compete at these Olympic Games. This is something for me that is really tough because it is the end of my career and it's not the way I planned it."
