Happy Mothers Day Poems On: The History of Mothers Day
How Did This Get Started?
In 1858 a young Appalachian homemaker by the name of Ann Jarvis was very concerned about sanitation during the Civil War. She started organinzing women to help with the sanitation efforts for both the Union and Confederate sides in 1868. She called this Mother's Work Days.Following Jarvis' lead, Julia Ward Howe (a social activist), "Mother's Day Proclamation" was penned in 1870. Howe's goal was to unite all women against war and called for peace and disarmament. Unfortunately her attempts to have a Mother's Day for Peace never came about.
Ann Jarvis' daughter, Anna, desperately wanted to have a memorial day for mothers. Her mother Ann passed in 1905. In 1907 she thought of a way and passed out carnations after one Sunday morning church service. The flowers went to all the mothers of the congregation (approx. 500 of them). (The picture above is of the St. Andrew's Methodist Episcopal Church where Anna and her mother Ann attended. It is now a shrine for the first Mother's Day observed.) 1908 was the first year Mother's Day was celebrated. Not until May 8, 1914, did Mother's Day become a recognized holiday thanks to President Woodrow Wilson.
As carnations were used in the first observance of Mother's Day, they have come to be the representative flower. White is usually used to show respect to mothers that have passed and red to all other mothers.
Unfortunately, Anna Jarvis despised how her holiday was becoming more and more commercialized. She went broke trying to have the holiday revoked and died a bitter woman regretting having ever started getting the holiday recognized!

FOR MOMSShe was there at the beginning
When the world was new to you -
She was there to turn to happy times
Those when, you were hurt or blue.
She was there to listen to your thoughts
And when you asked, to give advice -
She was there to tell you, "Those don't match!"
Or, "Hon, you sure look nice."
A Mother's Love Determines How
A mother's love determines how
We love ourselves and others.
There is no sky we'll ever see
Not lit by that first love.
Stripped of love, the universe
Would drive us mad with pain;
But we are born into a world
That greets our cries with joy.
How much I owe you for the kiss
That told me who I was!
The greatest gift--a love of life--
Lay laughing in your eyes.
Because of you my world still has
The soft grace of your smile;
And every wind of fortune bears
The scent of your caress.
by Nicholas Gordon (Many more available at his website)
She was there with you at nighttime
To help you say your prayers _
She was there to tell you, "It's alright."
When you had a dream that scares.I Know I Haven't Been an Easy Child
I know I haven't been an easy child,
But love for you lies underneath my whims;
There is no way I could be tame or mild:
I need sometimes to shout and wave my limbs.
You're the wall I need to test my height,
The countervailing force to test my strength,
The chain I hammer at with all my might,
Even though you have increased its length.
It's tough, I know, to be both Mom and Dad,
To raise me all alone, just hit or miss;
To have to play at once good cop and bad,
And give me grief before my goodnight kiss.
But love against the odds is stronger still:
I need your fierce, proud love, and always will.
by Nicholas Gordon
She was there at morning time
To get you up and out of bed
Thank You for Your Love Throughout the Years
Thank you for your love throughout the years.
Happiness comes slowly, day by day.
All you and Dad have given me remains,
Not distant from the wellspring of my tears.
Kindnesses can never go away.
Your love has been my rock, despite the strains
On all of us as separation nears.
Under your roof, my love will always stay.
by Nicholas Gordon
She was there when you didn't feel good (or did)
To say, "You'd best stay home, instead."
She was there when you were hungry
And when you had those dirty clothes -
She was there when you needed her
(How she knew? Only heaven knows.)
She was there at the beginning
And she'll be there your whole life through -
She'll be there in your mind and heart
Just like a mother is supposed to do
by Del "Abe" Jones
Always Mom
You were my fairy tale princess,
So much larger than life.
You were my angel and my witness
Through all my pain and strife.
At times you made me angry,
Great words I would proclaim
How someday you'd be sorry.
You were the one to blame.
But when I needed comforting
You alway found the time.
Your words were more soothing
Than days of childhood sublime.
Now the distance holds us apart,
The boundaries have no end.
I'll hold the memories in my heart.
You're my mother, my best friend

Yep... i'd say you had a great day along with your mom!Not Sure What to Write About?
Now, i've sure been there with you but as i started thinking about what to write.. it came to me! Write about anything that you've experienced with you mom! Come now, she's been there your whole life and she's the one whose helped with all those bumps and scraps along the way. She's shed tears for you... because you were hurt or in trouble... she knows what you were going through when that "boyfriend" or "girlfriend' broke up with you... she actually shared that pain in her heart! Because, like all mothers they don't every want their sons or daughters to have to go through that!
Maybe you remeber that time when "Johnny" broke up with you... and how hurt you felt especially after all those things he said and promised you! He said anything to try to get you to fall in "LOVE" with him! hmmmm..... but you were true to yourself and morals and said NO... funny how that works and all of a sudden "Johnny" didn't want you around anymore.... :( Do you remember how you felt?
the hurt and pain ! how you never thought you'd go outside again and just wanted to stay locked away from everyone? Well... you mom felt that too!! Did you go to her... trying not to cry.. maybe sitting there and all of a sudden you burst out in tears! Did mom come along and maybe just give you a great big hug and said..."It OK honey!" ... I'm here for you... and you broke down then and there? You see... you mom remembers all those times too! She may not talk about them anymore but all those memories are there and have been for years! Now, don't you think you could write a few lines ... to express how much that time meant to you back then... maybe how that warm, reassuring hug meant the world to you at that time? Look inside and read your heart! Let those feeling flow out...Your mom isn't going to make fun of you if your happy mothers day poem is corny, silly, funny... nope.. all she'll know is that its from YOU! That's all that will matter to her... there's no gift, food, restaurant, or show that can every replace that single day in both your lives!!! Write that poem for both of you!! GO FOR IT!
