Motor Scrapers - Construction Equipment

Self-propelled scrapers, also known as motor scrapers, are large machines which are motorized and are used for hauling, leveling out materials, and digging in a variety of construction type jobs. A motor scraper quickly moves large quantities of dirt around while running on large, massive tires. There are four main types of motor scrapers: standard self-propelled motor scrapers, auger scrapers, push-pull type scrapers, and elevating scrapers.

Standard Self-propelled Motor Scrapers

A standard self-propelled motor scraper is comprised of a bowl, an ejector to hydraulically push out the load and an apron that drops down over a load of material so that it can retain it. Each of these components is able to function independently due to the hydraulic system of the motor scraper. The number of wheels, bowls, and engines can vary in the standard self-propelled motor scrapers.

Auger Motor Scraper

The auger scraper is what is known as a self-loading scraper. Inside the bowl of the scraper, there are two vertical augers which are mounted. These are rotated hydraulically, which assists in raising material into the motor scraper bowl. A full load is always certain in an auger scraper as an equal amount of power is needed for the last yard of material as for the first.

Push-Pull Motor Scraper

The push-pull motor scraper is a system which enables the motor scraper to be pushed or pulled. This is achieved by the joining of two scrapers which are standard while material is being loaded. This allows the machines to be able to self-load. This is done while the four engines' power is simultaneously used to load each bowl.

Elevating Motor Scraper

The elevating motor scrapers include an electrically-driven elevator which is made of two chains that are equipped with a series of crossbars, instead of an apron. The purpose of the elevator is to assist in loading the material into the elevating bowl of the motor scraper. In order to dump material, one must slide the floor of the bowl backwards. To do this, the elevator should be reversed. This allows the load to be evenly dumped.

Caterpillar revealed their very first motor scraper in 1941. This motor scraper was referred to as the DW-10. Caterpillar used a four-wheel tractor for this scraper and featured a 100 horsepower engine. The tractor pulled the scraper with a capacity of 10-cubic yard. Ten years later, Caterpillar introduced to the market, the DW-21. This new model featured the first two-wheeled tractor in the company which was attached to a scraper that was cable-operated. It was capable of moving 18 cubic yards at a time. It was a true forerunner of present line of motor scrapers by Caterpillar, as it had the capability of steering in ninety-degrees. During the 1950s, there were models introduced which were smaller until the 600 series was introduced in 1960.
In 1964, Caterpillar introduced and began to manufacture elevating motor scrapers. The first model was known as the J619. From 1979 to 1984, the company sold its most powerful and largest motor scraper, the 639D. This model could move 34 cubic yards and was a twin-powered model. In 1984, Caterpillar began offering a line of auger motor scrapers. These motor scrapers were self-loading and were touted as an alternative to the elevating motor scraper models. The auger models were able to be single powered or twin-powered.
