Arrive in Breckenridge Safely
While snow and cold weather are natural elements of mountain life, winter driving can often be completely foreign. In fact, no matter how experienced of a driver you are, snow, sleet, and ice can quickly turn any driving adventure into a scary situation. While staying indoors during snow storms is certainly the best advice, there's too much fun to be had outdoors to make this a reality. So, if you're travelling the mountain roads in Breckenridge, Colorado, slow down and take extra precaution by following a few safety tips.
A Few Tips to Keep in Mind...
Just because you may be driving an SUV doesn't mean you're safe from ice and snow. And, it certainly doesn't mean you can cruise through the snow at fast speeds, leaving the smaller guys in the snow banks. While four-wheel drive vehicles will certainly help you get up snowy roads, there is really no protection from slowing down on icy patches. Black ice is especially dangerous because it's practically impossible to see so drivers who assume the road is dry can quickly fall prey to slippery ice. Go slow and keep in mind that black ice is all around you.
Keep your windshield wet.
Driving the roads of Breckenridge in the winter will almost always require you to hit the spray button for windshield wiper fluid. The kickback of snow and sleet is a quick enemy to a clean windshield and will cause you to move through fluid in no time. Be sure your vehicle's supply is full and carry a backup gallon in your trunk. Not only will you run out quickly, but local stores often sell out in a hurry as well during the winter.
Stock up.
If you're planning a trip to Breckenridge, be sure to check all of your car levels before you leave. Similarly, while you're in Breckenridge, be sure to keep an eye on these levels throughout your trip. Check your antifreeze for colder temperatures, be sure your tires are have sufficient tread and air supply, and keep your gas tank filled, not only to prevent fuel line freeze up, but to help you get up and down the gas guzzling mountain roads.
Have a back up.
A winter driving kit is always good to carry in the trunk of your car, but it's practically a necessity when driving in Breckenridge. Keep an extra layer of clothes (particularly a hat and gloves), a small shovel, a blanket, a flashlight, a first-aid kit, and an extra supply of food and water. Additionally, keep a cell phone charger in your glove compartment and always travel mountain roads with your cell phone.
Slow it down.
Put your car in low gear when traveling down hill and avoid the urge to travel fast. Not only will your brakes thank you, but you'll travel much safer at slower speeds.
Be considerate.
No matter how aggressive other drivers are behaving, be sure to be considerate of other drives. Yield to those traveling uphill, brake early, and leave plenty of room in between you and the car in front of you to provide plenty of room in case your car does slide when coming to a stop. If unruly cars are tailgating too closely, don't feel pressured to give into speed. Simply allow them to pass, or pull over at a safe pull off area.
Breckenridge Colorado is truly a winter wonderland and a paradise for those who love snow. By taking a few extra precautions and keeping safety as your top priority, you'll arrive at your Breckenridge condo rental in one piece. So, slow down, enjoy the ride and have a wonderful stay.
