Big Kisses on the Big Screen

Here you will find some of the best movie kisses of all time. I will not be presumptuous enough to put them into some ranked system, because it is far to subjective - the movies are too different, and the kisses are too different. They cannot be properly be compared. The movie kisses included are what I believe are "of the best".

This is a list which is obviously always growing. If you think of one I have forgotten (or would like to dispute one I have included) visit the guestbook at the bottom of the page.

Kiss Me

Movie Kiss Montage

A mash up of a bunch of famous movie kisses from titanic to pirates to romantic comedies etc. The song is ''Kiss Me'' by Sixpence None the Richer...I chose this song for obvious reasons. Hope you enjoy! Disclaimer:Copyright infringement is not intended, as I own none of this!

It's the kiss.

St

CoolGirlArt says:

I think it would be the actual kiss, especially if it's very passionate. It shows true emotion.

Mizzike says:

It's hard to say, but I have to go with the kiss! At times, it can be that you want to people to kiss really badly... but if the kiss was less than par, it makes the characters worthless! If you played a reel of kissing scenes, it's easy to tell which ones are good and which are bad just by seeing the kiss itself... without even knowing the characters!

Beth says:

True, the characters are important, but if their kiss isn't up to scratch it's a complete let down! You would still know a good kiss when you saw one even if you didn't know the characters. I think the atmosphere is really important, a good example is The Notebook, the kiss scene in the rain! That would have to be my number one. :)

zanzona says:

its a good idea about kissing!

It's the characters.

lex says:

Its how the characters build around eachother, how they themselves tell the story. its how the plot somehow throws them into eachother, or slowly builds up to the perfect moment. The kiss itself seems almost personal, or individual due to how the characters have acted. I believe that the greatness of the kiss itself comes with who the characters truly are.

Abby_Monroe says:

The lead up to the kiss I vote for Sleepless In Seattle

Suzie-Shine says:

Tha characters and the build up to the kiss.

jo says:

the buildup of the characters.

kab, I had to laugh when I read your lens' title The Best Movie Kisses of All Time because I don't think I would have ever thought of the subject for a lens! But your information is very interesting... Thanks for the info about the longest kiss with Jane Wyman. Three minutes and five seconds?? Wow. Can't wait to pass that information along!

Where It All Started

The First Kiss on Film

The May-Irwin Kiss (Edison, 1896)

The May Irwin Kiss - also known as The May Irwin-John C. Rice Kiss or The John C. Rice-May Irwin Kiss, lasts just a few seconds and was directed by William Heise. An amorous moment from the Broadway play The Widow Jones is shared by actors John C. Rice and May Irwin. In 1896 the Edison Company purchased the rights to a motion picture projector that had been invented by C. Francis Jenkins and Thomas Armat. The projector was renamed the "Vitascope" and had its commercial debut on 23 April 1896. During its first year the most popular film shown using the "Edison" vitascope was the "May Irwin Kiss." May Irwin (1862--1938) was a Canadian actor, comedienne and singer. Her first starring role on Broadway came in 1895 in a musical comedy created for her by J.J. McNally, called "The Widow Jones". In one key scene at the end of the play, Irwin and her co--star, John C. Rice, kiss each other with something of a flourish. Many were scandalized when they recreated their stage kiss for Edison's camera the following year, and one clergy member denounced the film as "a lyric of the stockyards". Critic Herbert Stone complained, " . . . neither participant is physically attractive and the spectacle of their prolonged pasturing on each other's lips was hard to beat when only life size. Magnified to gargantuan proportions and repeated three times over is absolutely disgusting!" Despite, or perhaps because of these derisive reviews, the "May Irwin Kiss" became the most popular film produced that year by Thomas Edison's film company. May Irwin went on to star in many other plays and became one of the most well--loved comediennes of her time. Happily married and the mother of two sons, she performed on Broadway until 1922. She managed her money well, and when she finally retired to the island she owned on the St. Lawrence river she had become a millionaire.
