Finding Neverland

A movie review

19 April 2007

I have so many DVD's in my collection and just happened to watch "Finding Neverland" last night and realized that I haven't talked about this movie yet.

This movie tells the tale of the famous play writer: James Barrie who wrote Peter Pan. In this movie, one is taken through the period in his life where he became friends with a widow and her sons which inspired him to write the play of Peter Pan in the early 1900's.

The role of James Barrie is portraid excellently by one of my favourite actors: Johnny Depp. The supporting actress is Kate Winslet as the boys' mother.

The music in the play is beautifully composed as is the story itself. There are also some quirky remarks that are being made by the characters which makes you laugh. Another well known supporting actor that stars in this movie is Dustin Hoffman.

An interesting fact about James Barrie is that he was a child at heart, therefor had a big love for children and helped them in anyway he could. One of the most memorable things he had done was to leave behind in his will, the copyrights / ownership of the story of Peter Pan over to the London Childrens' Home of which today, they still have ownership and earn royalties.

All I can say is do yourself a favour and try and get hold of this movie and watch it once. I guarantee it that you'll love it straight away.

Hi The_Raven_Reviewer, cool lens. I really enjoyed some articles here. I have also created my lens , as well website on American idol. hope you don't mind if I brag about it , as bragging is acceptable here ;). Here ya go , American Idol returns for a sixth season and promises to be the biggest season to date. It all begins January 16, 2007 with a double premiere. Idolites can expect this season to began with the normal highs and lows as Paul, Randy, and Simon weed through grueling days trying to find the scattered performers ( a term used loosely) that actually have talent. A movie review

4 April 2007

Wow, wow, wow! What an awesome movie. I had my doubts because I wasn't a big fan of Sin City but Frank Miller has raised the bar when it comes to creating new worlds in movie making.

I was captured from the beginning in the ancient world of Sparta, along with the narrator's voice about the story that was about to unfold. Slow motion fight scenes, close ups, dialogue...all of these contributed to a beautifully told story about King Leonidas at the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC. At the end of the movie, one can not help but trying to let the movie sink in as this is definitelty a WOW movie in my books.

The characters in the movie are also brilliantly played by the likes of Gerard Butler as Leonidas and Lena Heady as Queen Gorgo. This movie has a story line that focusses on honour, bravery as well as family love and the fight for freedom. All I can say is that those Spartans are bad ass and I wouldn't want to be in their way if they were alive today.

As you know, I'm a avid epic movie lover and this movie was one of the best that I've watched since Gladiator and is definitely in my collection as soon as it is released on DVD. Go on and watch the movie and if you don't like it..... let me know why not.

A movie review

3 April 2007

Ok so this movie was released in 2002 but as you should know by now, this lense is not about just the latest released movies.

As an avid war movie lover, I've watched this movie a while ago and watched it again yesterday and am still impressed with it. This movie is a depiction of Hitler's life after WWI when he was an aspiring yet homeless painter. It follows his story from where he was struggling in making a living through selling his paintings to becoming one of the world's most hated villians in all of history.

As the movie progresses, so does one learn of new facts that isn't normally told in history books about Hitler.

As a result, this film started some controversy and was protested by people who was afraid that this movie would humanize Hitler. But after I've watched the movie, I sort of had an idea as to why he had such a hate and did what he did (eventhough it was not right).

Noah Taylor, who also played in Charlie and Chocolate Factory, played the role well and his character as Hilter was well supported by the fictional Art Gallery owner, played by John Cusack.

If the life tale of Hitler intrigues you in order to better understand why such inhumane actions took place during WWII, then this movie is worth watching.

Music and Lyrics

A movie review

29 March 2007

Whenever you see Hugh Grant starring in a movie, you can be sure of it having good humour and being played well by Hugh Grant with his "boyish" charm. He's also well supported by Drew Barrymore as the supporting actress.

This movie is about an 80's Pop star "has been" who needs to compose a song within 3 days for an internationally acclaimed music star or face loosing whatever celebrity status he still has. But he knows he's not good at writing lyrics. For this, fate has brought a woman to his apartment to attend to his plants and he soon discovers that she has a talent with words and thus convinces her to help him with the lyrics.

And so the movie takes us through the whole process where the two characters writes an excellent song and falls in love. (sorry for spoiling the plot) ;)

Some people might consider this movie as a "chick flick" but as a guy I have to admit that I did enjoy watching it and so did my female companion.

The interesting bits about this movie is that Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore sang all the songs themselves and that Adam Schlesinger composed all of the songs sang to this movie.

I recon this is a DVD worth adding to the "romantic" category once it has been released.

Pursuit of Happyness

A movie review

26 March 2007

This is probably one of those rare movies which inspires you in some way or the other after having watched it.

This movie is based on the true story of Chris Gardner who at one stage of his life had a job but had no money and had to live in shelters with his young son to becoming a multi-millionaire.

The lead character is excellently portayed by Will Smith and his son, Jaden Christopher Syre Smith in real life, plays the character's son as well.

The movie follows Chris' life from the bad times right through to where his life under goes a major change for the good. One can not help but sympathise with the lead character as he is portrayed as a loving father who will do anything to keep his son safe, even if it means finding shelter in a men's room at a subway station at one stage.

After having watched the movie, I remembered that there are people out there who's problems are worse than what mine is but if you are determined, you will be able to succeed.

This movie is definitely going to be added to my collection once it's released on DVD.

Borat

A movie review

20 March 2007

As you can see, I've got a lot of catching up to do :)

One of the other movies that I've recently decided to watch was the infamous Borat. I was in the mood for some "slapstick" comedy and though why the hell not. I was actualy glad I watched the movie.

It was a non stop, hillarious, ass ripping laughter experience from the beginning to the end. I know there were people out there that said that the movie was tasteless but who cares? You need to keep an open mind to it all when watching it and laugh for the funny scenes. Ok so there are maybe one or two scenes which I also had to sort of look away but that's what made the movie work.

Sacha, a.k.a Ali G did an excellent job in making the audience like Borat and even sympathise with him during some of his difficult ordeals.

It's a pity that this movie has given the character so much publicity, that it's not difficult to understand when Sacha announced that he will no longer play the character because everyone will know Borat.

Anycase, go out there and get the DVD if you're in need for a DVD that you can just pop in and laugh your ass off.

The Hills have Eyes

A movie review

19 March 2007

You know when you're in the mood for a horror film and see a movie whose trailer you've seen and thought, hmmm... this looks like a good one. Well, that is what I had thought about this movie.

The trailer looked awesome but the movie itself was a big dissappointment. It takes almost 30 - 40 minutes for the movie to actualy start becoming interesting and there are only 2 main action scenes during the course of the movie. I couldn't help laughing when the horror scenes started because frankly..... most of the scenes can be expected.

That is why I'm not realy going into more detail about this movie but you're more than welcome to have a look for yourself if you don't trust my judgement ;)

There are also rumours that there is a sequal to this movie so let's hold thumbs it turns out to be better than the first one.

Before Sunset

A movie review

16 February 2007

This movie has been rated as one of the most romantic film in recent memory: a pure love story.

This movie stars Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy about the two young lovers who we first met in the movie: Before Sunrise (1995)

Before Sunset is the sequel where the two characters meet each other for the first time after having parted ways 7 years before. I watched this movie when it first came out and now for the second time around and I am still captivated by the dialogue between these two characters.

It's as if they've only been parted for a few days. One excellent quote that I always remember is when Jesse said that he used to be in-secure but healthier in his younger years, but now he is more mature with deeper problems but better equiped to deal with them.

What I also enjoy about this movie everytime I watch it is that it seems to evoke memories of myself when I was this young, were most of the dialogue seems so familiar as to conversations I used to have with "that one and only love of your life".

I don't have to say anything more except that if you're a romantic by heart, go and get this movie....

Prime

A movie review

14 February 2007

When seeing the cast including Uma Thurman and Meryl Streep, one can expect a good movie. Now some of you out there might call it a "chick" flick but I though otherwise.

This movie is about a 37 year old woman who becomes romantically involved with a 23 year old after her recent divorce. The story itself is well written and I have to admit that the movie sort of took me down memory lane ;)

And trust me, any young man who can take Uma to bed, go for it boy! Now I am not going to reveal the twist in the story but here and there were some scenes that is worth a laugh.

A few interesting facts are that the numerals 27 and 37 are prime numbers (27 is mentioned in the movie) and that Uma's age signifies that she is in her sexual prime.

Anycase, this is a nice movie to watch and is not too boring. Personally I wouldn't add it to my collection but it doesn't hurt to have a romantic movie in one's collection once in a while so I'll probably will close my eyes, swipe that credit card and just purchase it. A Guy Thing

A movie review

12 February 2007

Picture this.... you're to get married in a week's time and just had your bachelors. You wake up, only to find a woman in your bed and you can't remember anything.... Yip, this is the start to one of the more hillarious movies that I've watched in a while.

Starring Jason Lee and Julia Stiles as the leading characters, this movie would be seen as what the "typical" guy will do in such a situation. I mean, what will you do if your fiance is gorgeous and you work for her dad who's rich, only to find out that the girl you slept with has a secret?

I litterally laughed my ass off through out the movie. There is especially one funny scene during the rehearsal dinner between the "chef" and the priest.

Although most will be able to tell how this movie is going to end, the funny scenes and quirky dialogue keeps one's attention from making it a boring movie.

Some of the supporting cast are:

Selma Blair (the naive brunette from Cruel Intentions)
James Brolin (Barbara Streisand's husband and star of the TV series - Pynsecola)

Make this movie a definite in your comedy collection!

Half Light

A movie review

6 February 2007

I'm not a big Demi Moore fan (although she is good on the eye) but in this movie, she surprised me as to how mature her acting got over the last few years since she came back to the big screen.

In this movie, she plays the role as a successful mystery writer who's son tragically drowns. In order to get over his death as well as to finish her novel, she moves to a small cottage next to the coast of Wales.

There she starts getting romantically involved with one of the locals, just to find out that things aren't the way they should be.

Now I'm a big fan of stories with a twist at the end and this sort of maintained my interest until the end. However, in the last 15 mins of the movie, you can already tell what is going on which sort of spoils the moment.

If you do pay attention though, you will notice that the character: Finlay, is played by James Cosmo.

The filming location mainly took place in Wales such as Llanddwyn Beach, Anglesey and small parts were shot in London, UK.

Some of the cast are:

Demi Moore, Hans Matheson, Therese Bradley, James Cosmo and Michael Wilson.

Want to experience the lifestyle of Wales?

If you've watched the movie and thought, "hmmmm....I'd like that to be added to my collection".... help yourself to this great deal.

Luther

A movie review

2 February 2007

Last night I felt like not doing much so I popped in one of my DVD collections: Luther

This movie is based on the life of Martin Luther, the man who literraly changed the course of Western Civilization during the 16th century with his writings and teachings against the Roman Catholic Church. An intersting fact about this movie is that all the information is very true to the fact and one can read up more about his life on Wikipedia.

Another interesting fact is that this movie was partially financed by the Luthern Church which puts a lot of credibility behind this movie and definintely worth adding to your collection.

The movie starts where Luther was still a law student who suddenly got caught in a lightning storm. As any human will do, he prayed to be saved from the storm by promising to commit his life to God. Well, he survived and from then on, he became a monk and so the rest became history.

There aren't that many well known actors in this movie except for Ralph Fiennes and Bruno Ganz (the actor who played an incredible role as Hilter in "The Downfall")but all of the characters and their story are well written for this movie.

I will definitely suggest you make a point of adding this rare movie to your collection. It will be the money well worth spend.

The Libertine

A movie review

23 January 2007

Even though this site brings you the latest updates on what is happening in the movie industry, you will find that I tend to review movies which has been on circuit for a while or DVDs that has been on sale for a couple of months already.

One such movie that I've watched was "The Libertine".

This movie is based on the life of John Wilmot, the 2nd Earl of Rochester in England, in the 17th century. He was a famous poet and stage play writer, but more notorious for being a libertine. That means that he basically had no moral values and did what he pleased. Married into the family of the King of England, Charles II (played by John Malkovichz)he was known to be well liked by the King. However, due to his nature, made a mocary of the King and had to flee from the Kings court.

The main character is played by Johnny Depp and he did an excellent performance of it. A funny thing about this movie is that his real name is being used in it. I thought that was quite funny. This movie's research was well done, with the costumes coming as close as they can to what the attire was like in those days. It almost gives you a glimpse of what it woud have been like in those days through the cinematography and scenes.

Due to his debauchery lifestyle, life's time clock eventualy caught up with him as he died at the young age of 32.

One trivia fact of this movie is that John Malkovich, who served as both actor and producer of this film, appeared as the main character, John Wilmot, but found that he was too old for the role, thus asking Johnny Depp to take over.

There are some witty scenes in this movie between Wilmot and his male servant (who he picked up from the street). There are also some scenes that can make the faint hearted blush, thus watch it with caution with certain people who take offence to such scenes as this movie is rated 18.

I personally enjoyed the movie, mainly because I love historical movies and am also a Johnny Depp fan.

What you do with this review is your own decision, but I can recommend you making an effort in watching it.

Catch you later,

A general discussion

I just want to go off the topic of moview reviewing in this insert for today and talk more about DVD collection. Now some of you out there might be collecting DVD's as a hobby, which I myself am also doing, and that you have a certain selection that you are collecting.

As strange as this might sound, my DVD collection is mainly focussed on Epic or Documentary films. The reason? (this is the cool part) I am trying to acquire a collection of films that follows the time line of human history.

My collection basically looks like this:

1. Troy
2. Gladiator
3. Passion of Christ
4. King Arthur
5. Braveheart
5. Luther
6. The Libertine
7. The Patriot
8. Master and the Commander
and so on and so on.....

Catching my drift. That is why I'm interested to know....with your collection, what is your theme that you are trying to establish and what DVD's have you got in your collection?

You, Me & Dupree

A movie review

17 January 2006

You, me and Dupree. Hmmmm.... what can I say about this movie? Well, I have to admit that I didn't watch it when it was first released on the big screen ,nor did I watch it when it was released on DVD. But, last night, I thought I'll watch it.

It doesn't happen that often that I have mixed feelings about a movie. Mixed feelings about that fact that it was half ok, half crap. Let me start with the half crap first. I feel that the movie's story line was weak and wasn't solid enough to realy establish an association with the characters. At one stage, I was actualy feeling sorry for how pathetic Owen Wilson's character turned out to be. I wish I could climb inside the TV screen and give him a big wake up call.

I also expected more from the ending of the movie. I think that the focus was more on how funny the writers could make the movie, rather than having an attention grabbing story. That explains why the movie only received a popular rating of 23%. Ouch!

There were however some realy funny scenes, especially the "butter" scene. When is comes to comedy movies like this, that is what one will expect from it. Funny scenes that you can't imagine is possible. Oh, and by the way.... Kate Hudson.... grrrrrr ;)

Anycase, this movie's production cost was a mere $54 million and grossed a total $126,113,963 world wide. Some might consider it a good return, others will say not so good. Go and watch this movie if you haven't already and decide for yourself.

Let us know what you think of it.

9/11

Last night I saw one of the most hair raising documentaries that I have seen in a long time. A friend of mine came over and told me he's got something to show me on his laptop.

It was a documentary about 9/11. Now I'm not that big into conspiracy theories, etc so I thought "hmmmm. What can top Michael Moore's Farenheit 9/11?" Anycase, I started watching it and immediately was captivated by the story line. It starts with the happenings before 9/11 as the opening scene, eventualy leading up to the actual event as the beginning of the documentary.

Excellent graphics makes one actualy stay interested in it as well as the information was well researched. The scary part of it all is that it's information that is freely available. Now "big brother" might be monitoring this ;) but there was a lot of things mentioned that makes you wonder: "what? can it be that simple?"

Well it made me think twice and personally believe that if this documentary should ever reach the mass public, then I think a lot of eyes will be opened.

But I don't want to speak propoganda and all that manipulating stuff. It was one in a few documentaries that realy makes you wonder...what if. Unfortunately I can't remember the name of this documentary but depending on how many of you out there would like to know, I'm sure I can make a plan ;)

So there we have it... more "revealing the truth" movies are coming out. Makes you wonder if the movie industry isn't part of some of the propoganda that is going around.

Take care.

The Holiday

Wow! It's halfway through January 2007 and it feels like new year was a long time ago. I recon that this year we will see some great movie releases and my credit card jut burning to buy tickets for the latest block busters.

That brings me to the question.... What do you consider as a "Block Busting Movie"? I was watching the movie called: "The Holiday", starring Jude Law, Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet (let's not forget Jack Black). I liked the movie. At first when my friend (a girl) wanted to watch it, I thougt "Ah man... a chick flick" but to my surprise, it turned out to be a well written story. I was very surprised to see Jack Black starring in a supporting role, without making his usual name arse.

In that movie, there was the scene were the old man (Kate's character's new friend) mentions that in the old days, a movie's success wasn't based on how much it can make within the first weekend after its release. That is scary to think that when you produce a movie and eventualy release it, you have to make good returns within the first wekeend of release. If it doesn't perform well then, then it's bound to be a flop.

That's why it was very interesting to see Ben Stiller's new movie "Night at the Museum" to hae made good returns after its first weekend of release. It just shows you under what pressure the screen writers are to come up with a captivating story as well as for the producer and director to make it all happen.

So what do you guys consider as important trait marks of a "block buster?"

Share it with us in the guest book.

Anyway people, I have to love you and leave you but I'll be here next time, same place same time.

Cheers!
