Moving on Campus

Ranked #21,554 in Education, #441,505 overall

So your moving on Campus in another state.

I have two friends who are sending their children off to college in another state come August. One will be driving to the campus, as it's only the next state over and about a 3hr drive. The other however is going from the West Coast to the Michigan, thus they will be flying. Additionally they have to move all their stuff out of the dorm and put it into storage during the summer. So how do you move your graduate across the continent?

Off to School

My friend going to Michigan is only going to take personal items and small things. They may also ship some items there if necessary, otherwise they will wait to get the items when the get there. On thing my friend wisely thought of is that they don't know what type of mattress she will have so it's better to wait until they are there to get the right kind. Also until your actually there and see the space you have to work with you might get to much stuff. Another thing to consider is where the student is coming from, not state wise, but environment. This friend may have a tougher transition, as she has her own room, I had another friend who shared her small room with 2 other siblings and was thrilled to have her own desk. The friend whose student is driving to campus is into Japanese and the minimalist life style so he'll do fine as long as he doesn't have a messy roommate.

So what kind of things might be useful for dorm life?

Options once your there.

Of course you can go to the local discount department stores a la Target, Walmart etc. But you may also want to check out the local thrift stores especially for furniture options. Additionally we don't want to forget the internet. With this students can shop for what they need, send the link to mom and dad, who can order it and have it shipped to the student, which is a great option if the student won't have a car, like my friend in Michigan.

You might want to consider Freecycle for the area your going too. Sign-up before you get there as it takes a little time. This way you might be able to get some things for free. Another inexpensive option is Craigslist.

Advice from...

On the way home from Colorado, I sat next to David, who was coming back from Philly to LA. He is a student at USC and had gone home for a visit during the summer break. I asked him what he needed when he first came to school. Besides his clothes and electronics all he need were small things like trash cans, desk lamps etc.

Oh dear -- I surely remember the good old days of moving on campus. It was my freshman year and I moved to another dorm way across campus -- with no car. Never had the luxury of moving into an apartment though.
