Mt Lassen Volcanic National Park

Ranked #5,784 in Travel & Places, #164,172 overall | Donates to Squidoo Charity Fund, ASPCA

Lassen Volcanic National Park.

Mt Lassen National Park is a fascinating place. It is perhaps the lonliest national park, but it is one of the most underrated. Mt Lassen is the southernmost Cascade Range volcano. The elevation is 10,459 ft which is similar to Mt St Helens prior to the devastating eruption in 1980. I hope you can go soon!

Lassen Erupted in 1915 and in Nearby Years.

This eruption was not of the magnitude of Mt St Helens, but it was captured from Anderson, California approximately 50 miles away in the Sacramento Valley.Mt Lassen

My trip review, in a nutshell

I have been to Mt Lassen numerous times. One May we went through tall passages of snow on either side of the main road. I have gone in summer and enjoyed the absolutely other worldly beauty of high mountain lakes. Manzanita Lake is found at the northwest entrance to the park and is great for outdoor folks, with camping and store facilties available. You can continue on the main road and pass the devastated area. Mt Lassen erupted in 1915 and caused destruction on its lower flanks. If you continue on you will pass over the highest road in the Cascade Mountains at 8512 feet. You will go by Emerald Lake which has a strange and beautiful green reflection. It is an amazing site. More on the volcanic features later.

I practically grew up in Lassen! We lived in San Diego, Ca but my Dad would take us here for a few weeks every other year (tenting then progressing to a small trailer) I learned to drive with my learner's permit the summer I was 15.(57 now!) I remember the Manzanita Lake area fondly, the little grocery store, the hotel, a nice restaurant, hthe bustling cabins..full of life. And was shocked when all this shut down in the early 70's. I remember the BIG FISH in Emerald Lake..you could hand feed them in the 50's! Still a lovely place but the memories are so great! Does anyone out there have any photos of the Manzanita Lake area when it was in full bloom? It is hard to find Historical photos.
