Muay Thai is referred to as "The Science of Eight Limbs", as the hands, shins, elbows, and knees are all used extensively in this art. A master practitioner of Muay Thai thus has the ability to execute strikes using eight "points of contact," as opposed to "two points" (fists) in boxing and "four points" (fists, feet) used in the primarily sport-oriented forms of martial arts.      In Earlier times Muay Thai consisted of an Arsenal of nine weapons - The Head, Fists, Elbows, Knees and Feet - collectively known as Na-wa-arud.

Modern Muay Thai no longer permits the use of the head in competition. However, there is still a formidable fighting force, capable of devastating an opponent, at the boxers' disposal.

Muay Thai is unique in that it uses all parts of the body, including the elbows and knees, for both training and competition.

Muaythai History

The history of Muay Thai is the history of the Thai people - both though are difficult to discover.
When the Burmese army sacked and razed Ayuddhaya to the ground, the archives of Thai history were lost. With them, much of the early history of Muay Thai also went.

The little we do know, comes from the writings of the Burmese, Cambodian, early European visitors and some of the chronicles of the Lanna Kingdom - Chiangmai.

What all sources agree on, is that Muay Thai began as a close combat battlefield fighting skill. More deadly than the weapons it replaced.

As to where Muay Thai came from, its evolution, the sources aren't clear and often contradict each other. But there are two main theories.

One says that the art developed as the Thai people moved down from China; honed in the struggle for land. The other theory says that the Thai people were already here and that Muay Thai developed to defend the land and people from constant invasion threats.

The second, while controversial, has considerable academic backing and archaeological evidence. The first is, however, possible as the area opened up to the early pioneers. What is known is that Muay Thai was an essential part of Thai culture right from its dawn. And in Thailand, it's the sport of kings.

In olden days, national issues were decided by Muay Thai contests.

The first great upsurge of interest in Muay Thai as a sport, as well as a battlefield skill, was under King Naresuan in 1584, a time known as the Ayuddhaya period. During this period, every soldier trained in Muay Thai and could use it, as the King himself did. Slowly Muay Thai moved away from its root in the 'Chupasart' and new fighting techniques were evolving.

The change in the art was to continue under another fighting King - Prachao Sua - the Tiger King. He loved Muay Thai so much that he often fought incognito in village contests, beating the local champions. During the reign of the Tiger King the nation was at peace. The King, to keep the army busy, ordered it to train in Muay Thai. The interest in the sport was already high but now it took off yet again.

Thai Boxing became the favourite sport and pastime of the people, the army and the King. Historical sources show that people from all walks of life flocked to training camps. Rich, poor, young and old all wanted some of the action. Every village staged its prize fights and had its champions. Every bout became a betting contest as well as a contest of local pride

Entertainment

Media depiction

* In 2004, Asanee Suwan won the Thai equivalent of the American Academy Award for best actor, the Supannahongsa Award, for his portrayal of Parinya Charoenphol (affectionately known as Nong Toom in Thailand) in Beautiful Boxer. The movie tells the true-life story of a man who masters Muay Thai in order to realize his dream of becoming a woman.

* Recently the films Ong-Bak, Tom-Yum-Goong, and Born to Fight helped to popularize Muay Thai. Ong-Bak demonstrates some techniques of the older style of Muay Thai - Muay Boran and Tom-Yum-Goong illustrates the fighting style of the Thai Royal Bodyguards (Jaturongkabaht, circa 1400-1700s) - Muay Koshasan (Elephant Boxing style). Muay Koshasan is also known as Muay Chang Tumlai Roang - (Smashing Elephant Boxing style) in that it emphasizes a lot of throwing, crushing, and breaking of joints and limbs.

* The film Kickboxer starring Jean Claude Van Damme was a film set in Thailand and based on the sport of Muay Thai. Van Damme's portrayal in this film should not be taken as an accurate depiction of Muay Thai.

* The film Muay Thai starring Jason Willis is set in Evansville, Indiana, about one of the best upcoming Thai fighters in 2006.

* The video game characters Sagat and Adon (Street Fighter), Joe Higashi (Fatal Fury), King (Art of Fighting), R.A.X. Coswell (Eternal Champions), Zack (Dead or Alive), Bruce Irvin and Bryan Fury (this is not sure, because he's listed as being a kickboxer, but uses muay thai techniques such as knees attacks or elbow attacks) (Tekken), Tong Yoon Bulsook (Urban Reign) and Brad Burns (Virtua Fighter) and Major Jackson "Jax" Briggs (Mortal Kombat) are Muay Thai fighters.

* Captain Falcon from Super Smash Brothers Melee fights using an extremely stylized, cartoony version of Muay Thai. The Muay Thai influence can be seen most clearly in his non-special moves, which include an elbow strike, a rising knee, and a one handed clinch.

* Vanessa Lewis (Virtua Fighter) uses Muay Thai as an alternate stance in addition to her standard Vale Tudo move set in Virtua Fighter 4. Jax (Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance) also uses a watered-down form of the style.

CHRISTOPH DELP

Author and trainer for fitness and martial-arts

More and more individuals take an active interest in Muay Thai and would like to learn this fascinating type of martial-arts. Regardless, whether the priority is to improve the body's fitness, to learn a type of self-defence or to compete in events, the aim can only be achieved by long-term and regular training.

Newcomers to Muay Thai are initially taught the basic stance and the sequence of steps. Thereafter, the basic attacking techniques must be trained. A selection of these techniques can be found in the book "Muay Thai - Traditionen, Grundlagen, Techniken des Thaiboxens" (Delp 2004). A complete list of attacking techniques is shown in the book "Thai-Boxen basics" (Delp 2001).

The student initially trains the attacking techniques slowly and controlled into the air, however, without interruption. If he succeeds in the correct use of the techniques into the air, he can add the training on punching bags to his programme. In the process, the techniques are first trained one by one before they are combined. Once the student has had some training sessions on the punching bag and succeeded, for example, in stabilising his wrist on impact, he can also train the techniques on pads and with a partner.

Master K - "Mr. Axe Elbow".

elbow k.o.

Master K or Kumron Vaitayanon ... became known as "I Sawk Kwan" which means "Mr. Axe Elbow"---grew up about 45 minutes outside of Bangkok, in the city of Prapradang, his father was the city mayor. At the age of eight, Master K asked his mother to buy him a heavy bag so he could practice Muay Thai. His mother, being aware of the whims of children, didn't want to buy him a heavy bag only to see it hanging unused after a short time. However, she gave Master K a large sack of rice. Master K, disgusted but determined, hung the sack of rice and started kicking. It wasn't until he had kicked his way through several sacks of rice that his mother bought him his first heavy bag.

Master K trained himself through most of his childhood, getting lessons now and then from a succession of trainers. When Master K was 13 years old, the middle school he was attending had a Muay Thai tournament. Master K had to fight three times in one day, but he won all his fights, and became champion of his school. Shortly after that, his cousin began to train him on a regular basis. Master K's cousin was a professional Muay Thai Bantamweight champion, his fight name was "Singh Ro.So.Po.". It was the cousin who set-up Master K's first official professional fight.

Master K recalls being nervous about the first fight. Mostly, however, he was excited about getting a chance to prove himself in the ring. At the sound of the bell for the first round, Master K and his opponent came out throwing push kicks, jabs, and other techniques with moderate power, each fighter testing out the other. When Master K gained confidence, he took a step forward with his rear foot and suddenly he struck his adversary with a front-leg round kick. Foot and shin wrapped around his opponent's neck, Master K dropped him to the mat. Master K was surprised to see his foe lying there without any attempts to get up. To day, Master K laughs when he remembers how angry he got and how he yelled at his downed opponent, "Get up! That was just my left leg, I haven't kicked you with my right leg! I haven't kicked you with my strong leg yet!" It was on that day that Master K came to realize that his left leg was his strong leg. So, from then on, Master K used that as an advantage, fighting with his strong leg forward.

Suriya Sak Muay Thai Team

Founded in 1992 by Master K, Team Suriya Sak has enjoyed great success in both professional and amateur Muay Thai. Starting out with only a few select students, Team Suriya Sak has grown considerably over the years. The team now resides in several locations, as many boxers have become instructors with their own camps. However, the strong spirit of Suriya Sak still binds them as a family.

Master Toddy

A trainer of world champions

Master Toddy A trainer of world champions, Master Toddy has always been known to strive for the best. Being a trainer and coach in Thailand, Master Toddy had the opportunity to train in both Muay Thai and Taekwondo at the same school. Not only was he exposed to these martial arts, he was also able to learn from champions of other styles who were housed in the same school.

It was an unusual, but very helpful, means of learning the heart of martial arts. At the age of 20, Master Toddy wanted to do something adventurous. Landing a part in the James Bond movie, Man with the Golden Gun, he headed out to England shortly afterwards. Making his home in Manchester, Master Toddy opened the first Muay Thai school in England. The school gained notoriety as the trainer began to produce world champions. Students from as far as 200 miles away would drive just to attend one of Master Toddy's Muay Thai classes. In England, Master Toddy was known as the father of Muay Thai. His fighters were distinguished champions, and his promotions were always organized and professional. Even now Master Toddy is still known as the number one trainer and promoter in England, being the first to air a live TV promotion back to Thailand.

After spending 16 years overseas, Master Toddy decided to make his mark in the United States. He packed up his training gear and headed out to Las Vegas, Nevada, continuing his streak as a world-class trainer. In his first two years, Master Toddy trained 4 world champions by himself. Wanting to achieve the best in Muay Thai training, Master Toddy recruited top-notch fighters from Thailand to form the Champion Instructor Team.

In addition to training students, Master Toddy has also done stuntwork for movies such as Austin Powers. He has choreographed fight scenes for various TV programs, and trained famous stars. The Secret Service and Special Forces have even enlisted Master Toddy's help in training their members.

Confident with the vast expertise of the other masters, Master Toddy sharpens the Muay Thai techniques learned by the students. He is also responsible for the psychological strength unique among his fighters. His champions fight with tremendous heart, Master Toddy looking for and reinforcing the various talents of each individual fighter. Included in the list of over 30 world champions trained by Master Toddy are Maurice Smith, Dale "Apollo" Cook, Ronnie Green, Lisa Howarth, Kash "The Flash" Gill,Kiyotaka Kato, and Howard Brown.

Common mistakes in holding Thai pads
You don't need to learn to hold Thai pads to become a fighter. However, learning to feed Thai pads is a challenging part of the art and is necessary to become a teacher. If this is your goal, make sure to pay careful attention to Thai pad holding technique as you progress. Listed below are several things not to do:

Don't put your thumbs on the inside of the hand strap. You can get your thumb sprained or broken.
If your thai pads have buckles, use the buckle but not the secondary loop. If the pad holder is injured you want to be able to get the pads off him right away.
Adjust the angle of your pads to the kicking angle of the kicker. Students with little hip flexibility will kick in a more upward direction. For students with better hip rotation don't create too little surface area by holding the pads at a near parallel angle to the ground. The kicker's leg can bounce off the pad and hit you in the stomach or groin.
Don't reach out as the kick comes in to try to keep it away from your body. This can cause the kicker to miss and hit you either above the pads (face) or, more commonly, below the pads (stomach, groin). Hold the pads and relax your body, and exxhale when the kicker's kick makes impact.
Don't hold the pads near your face for high kicks or while kneeling for a low kick.
Don't stick out your toungue, no matter how tired you are.
don't put your head down if you are holding for plum position. you stand a good chance of getting a knee in the head. Combatively you want your head upright.
